[YouTube & Webseries] Wheel of YouTubery, turn turn turn

So let's begin…

Love 'em or hate 'em, web series about video games are a big deal on YouTube. It seems like everyone and their distant European uncle who only visited that one Christmas is making a web series about games now. In my travels on the illustrious tube of the nets I have found many a cool and shockingly unwatched shows. There are plenty of 'Let's Play' people out there, but I hope to find shows who do full on entertaining/documentary/review/preview type content.

How does I tell people about something I sawed?
Present a show in a reply with the name and the site it can be watched on. Seriously, posting about a show and making us search Google just shows you are super lazy. The opposite sex strongly avoids people who don't post fresh links. If you don't know what I am talking about, try and post something like this young man who's identity I stole for demonstrational purposes.

IohYCAu.jpg

Also, don't be afraid of posting a link or embedding a video directly if it's really worth it!

I'll post a criminally under watched series below in just a second!

Let's open this up!

The first show I really wanted to mention is called 'PortsCenter'.

PortsCenter focuses on all the rare/interesting ports of games going from one platform to another.
Hosted by Ben Paddon, the show is equal parts funny, informative, and entertaining.

    Their Official Homepage:
    http://www.Portscenter.tv

    Their YouTube Page:
    http://www.youtube.com/user/PortsCenterTV?feature=watch

A link to an episode all about the Resident Evil 2 port on the Nintendo 64.

I'm just going to mention Game Center CX since it needs more love around here. Yes, it's a Japanese TV show, but I don't give a fuck since it's fucking awesome to watch.

If you use this thread to advertise your YouTube channel, then I will do something graphically violent.

This applies to regulars, because it creates the impression to dimwits that it's cool for them to pimp their channel within 10 minutes of registering. I hate to do that, as I want to encourage the community to share neat stuff they made, but YouTube channel advertising is becoming a Thing these days. You may still link your channel in your signature, as always.

That is a very good point. Try and find people OUTSIDE of content you have made yourself!

In fact the rarer and more unwatched the better!

Deceased Crab's La Mulana LP was, I believe, the first one I ever watched. I stopped watching them after his Cave Story one, and from what I hear it's just as well. I can see how his schtick could get a bit irritating, and doing the same game over and over is just weird.

Aside from the Grumps and Retsupurae, I watch a lot of the Yogscast videos. Mostly the Minecraft ones on the main BlueXephos channel but their Garry's Mod videos are pretty entertaining also, and I like a lot of the videos Duncan (Yogscastlalna) does as well. The Farming Simulator 2013 livestream was rather incredible.

I always loved that TV reflection thing you see on their episodes. It made the games feel more legitimate somehow.

The ones he did for the Chzo Mythos (X days a Y) games were great. Sometimes he played some obscure games and talked about their history and other trivia. It did finally get old, though.

I also dig Two Best Friends Play, even if they're just the best clips from a session instead of multiple videos of a full playthrough.

I immediately bought this game after watching this. It was just as fun as I'd hoped.

Yeah, they all work together in the same place but have different accounts and game types they focus on. I think it's 10 accounts officially. Each one usually uploading at least one video a day, so it's a ton of content if you like all of their personalities.

There's usually not much overlap though, so you aren't jumping from account to account to get the correct next episode in a series.

Just wondering, do those who watch the 'Let's Play' videos get burned out from so much content so fast?

There is that one guy DSPgaming who released 23 videos in the last 24 hours of nothing but commentary and gameplay of Skyrim and the new Aliens game. Isn't that a bit much?

It's definitely not as funny as their Machinima series but still worth checking it out to see if you can dig them over a prolonged period of time just nerding out and just chilling in their element rather than being on 100% of the time.

There are tons of channels that just do LPs of whatever is popular. This can be very flash-in-the-the-pan in regards to popularity, so they jam out a bunch of videos in an attempt to be first.

Basically it boils shit down to what you covering as opposed to providing any kind of talent in regards to skill, humor, or insightful commentary.

My favorite channel is Diabetuus and Slowbeef's retsupurae. Though I'm liking their longpuraes lately more than the riffing on terrible let's players.

Kings Quest series is good stuff and they've started a Let's Play of I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream that's good. Been pumping out a lot of videos lately too.

I would like you to introduce you all to Tasteful Understated Nerdrage.

This is the channel of a man who has Opinions about videogames (mostly Mass Effect 3 so far, but he's begun to branch out) and is not afraid to share them. He also has at least some interest in/knowledge of literature and literary genres and is not afraid to apply that knowledge to videogames.

Oh I forgot I watch another YouTuber, Campster/Errant Signal. His analysis of games isn't the deepest or the craziest but it's generally pretty good and I agree with 80% of it and disagree with 20% of it for good reasons, which is a good sort of percentage for someone doing bland, inoffensive, but still insightful commentary. This thread is a great idea. Youtube has basically replaced tv for me, and I love to find new obscure channels. One guy I have been watching a lot of is Scott Manley. He mostly plays Kerbal Space Program, and occasionally plays other games/mods. He very knowledgeable about space stuff (I think he has a degree in physics) and sprinkles facts about space exploration in his videos. He is also very good at the game and very good at explaining advanced concepts in orbital mechanics. Here are a couple of my favorites.

Campster's newest video is about "what is a game" and it's probably the best thing on the topic since the Proteus developer wrote a thing. Pretty much the only thing bad about it is that he says basically everything I would ever have said on the topic and thus there is now no point in my putting my thoughts out there at all.

One of my long time favorites, Armchair Arcade's Matt Chats

No gimmicks, no jokes (for the most part). Just a guy with a pretty encyclopedic knowledge of old school games who likes going back and showing off/talking about old school games. Some he used to play when he was young, some he is playing for the first time, and others he plays for their "historic significance". Like one time he played what probably amount to the first 4x, realtime, space empire management MMO that was actually created back in like the 60's or maybe early 70's. Very awesome stuff.

Sometimes he'll interview the people responsible for some old school classics.

I highly recommend the series if you grew up on games in the 70's/80's or if you are at all interested in gaming history.

Though he does sometimes play newer(ish) games too.

edit- To give you an idea of the content, his latest Matt Chat interviews Joel Billings (SSI founder) about the Gold Box series and Panzer General.

I believe it was this one Matt Chat 15. That episode he shows off the PLATO computer system which had several different games for it including the space empire mmo type game (which he is surprised to find people still playing :P) and a proto-Elite game.

edit- The game itself is just called Empire, IIRC.

I watch Video Games Awesome fairly often (they also have a Youtube account if Blip isn't your thing, though Blip is updated first).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBRG3JNjJqA&list=SPGxCL8JAojAM4i5Ay1CChm-NCt6s4NhSJ&index=1

It's a group of (up to) 5 Canadians who have a pretty cool setup where you can see them, the game, and a live chat all at the same time (except with some Wii U games where the gamepad screen replaces the chat). They livestream a bunch and then upload the videos later for all to view.

Their production values are also pretty good for this. Generally really good green screening to get all the windows on screen, high quality cameras and equipment (they even rigged up a camera to attach to the Wii U gamepad and record it's screen), and usually some sort of themed costuming. I think I even remember the main host mentioning he had set up several back-up generators so that a power outage wouldn't disrupt the livestreaming part of the show (though I tend to just watch the recorded uploads so that wouldn't effect my viewing much).

They tend to not just play games, but also do trailer nights where they watch all the E3 or PAX or whatever trailers and react to them. They'll also do midnight release streams for some bigger games and such.

One flaw they have is that I sometimes disagree about their opinions on some games because they seem to value flash over substance in a lot of cases. However, I later realized that this is largely due to the format of their show (group of friends reacting to stuff during a livestream with tons of people watching and chatting at you...of course flashier is going to be much better for that) so I take things with a little more grains of salt.
