SpyParty... party?

SpyParty is a clever game about subtle behavior, currently in closed beta. The developer, Chris Hecker, was at PAX East two years ago and his booth was incredibly popular. People loved the tense asymmetrical gameplay, where one person plays as a spy attempting to accomplish mission objectives at a crowded party, and the other player watches on as a sniper with one bullet trying to deduce who the spy is from the behavior of the party-goers. It's a game that you can't play just once... but unfortunately, due to the length of the lines two years ago, that was exactly the case for a lot of people. I was wondering if there was anyone else in the beta who would be willing to bring their copy & a laptop to play it on. I would be willing to organize some sort of tournament, or just general get-together of people who wanted to play. It's a great game to play online, but nothing beats sitting across from your opponent, and the excited yelling that erupts every time the sniper pulls the trigger.

I can bring my laptop, my copy of the game, and a controller. Games are short and fun to watch, so even if we just got one more person to bring the same, we would have a blast.

Does anyone have a copy to bring? Or a laptop, gamepad, or any combination of the three? What kind of venue would people prefer? What time would work best? This doesn't have to be a big to-do - but even a few people in the beta getting together to play would be a hell of a lot of fun.

I'm in the beta myself, and while I might not be able to bring a laptop to the cause, I'd be willing to donate my account for anyone who wants to play who isn't in. Chris isn't coming to East this year, so there won't be any other opportunities for others to try it out.

Awesome, thanks for offering! Another laptop shouldn't be too hard to find.
With two copies of the game, we could set up a tournament. With 3, we could have a tournament going and have one computer set up with the tutorial for people who are new to the game. Four, obviously, would allow more people to play.

I don't expect this event to be too crowded. Maybe 10-12 people, at most. I'll try to get the word out to people who are interested, maybe make a little flier with the time & location.

It looks like Saturday will be the best night for me, but I'm flexible. Since you're the one with the other account, what time would work best for you? I was thinking of maybe setting aside 2 hours for this, possibly in the mezzanine area of the Westin. Does 6-8 sound good?

Thursday's super busy. After 3, I'm not sure I'll have time. (hotel check-in, dinner, party, board game night) We could try to do it before 3, or we could set up somewhere during board game night. I have a huge board game collection I don't usually get to break out, though, so I'd rather be board-gaming.

Also: the game might be in open beta by the time PAX comes around.

I doubt the game will be quite ready for Open Beta in the next 3 weeks, judging by Checker's posts on the matter. I'd figure late April/early May.

So after reading this RPS article, I picked up the open beta of this game today and wow, is it hard! If theres a game that needs skill based match-making, this is definately it. Luckily, even if you playing against an experience player and losing every match, at least they will tell you what you're doing wrong. I understand that learning all the ai behaviors takes time and patience, but geez. That said, this is definitely the more tense pc game i've ever played. When you're the spy and the sniper's laser is hovering around you, its hard not to sweat a little.

    Anyone else playing this lately?
