East 2013 Indie Favorites

So Now that East 2013 is over and we've all been through (or are still going through) our PAX recovery phase I started thinking back to all the awesome new indie games I saw there. Since the indie megabooth is one of my favorite parts of PAX I decided to have a little indie game off in my head. Which was the coolest best funnest looking indie game I saw there....and I decided I'd share my opinion's with you and hear back all your favorites as well:

1. Ray's The Dead....if their is one game that really left me waiting for it's release it was this. Besides it being the unofficial sort of sequel and kind of spiritual successor to one of my favorite games of all time Stubbs the Zombie, the game looked, sounded and played amazingly. Sort of a pikmin style game where you play as Ray the zombie and go around eating and building your zombie army. The game is being developed by Ragtag studios a very indie dev, consisting of (if I remember correctly) 4 developers + artists, two of the developers having come from former Stubbs developer Wideload Games. The game is being made for PC (Steam Greenlight now) as well as tablets and will be a day one buy for me.

2. Charlie Murder....Yes the badass looking side scrolling co-op combat game from The Dishwasher and I Made A Game With Zombies in it developer. Though it was shown off last year the game was much more put together this time around. The only flaw it has is being Xbox Live Arcade only but it'll probably be a sure buy for me as well when it launches

3. Contrast....This game really looked awesome and different and like something I totally want to try. Though I didn't get to play it, from what I got to see the game switches between you playing as a 3d person and her 2d shadow using walls and buildings to get around the map. Didn't see enough to fully judge but is certainly something I'm going to keep my eye on in the near future. Along with that the developer said an open beta will be launching relatively soon.

Other notable mentions should be Outlast and Quadrilateral Cowboy as well. I'd wish I was able to get to play Transistor as well but my patience was too thin and I couldn't wait in line :/

Hopefully I don't sound like a Jerk Store, but I was somewhere between "iffy" and "unimpressed" with all of those. Ray's the Dead had promise, but most of the controls didn't want to work for me (prolly just alpha bugs, though, and it seems like a great fit for iOS). Charlie Murder's overly gritty aesthetic was a turn-off, and Contrast made me wonder if it wouldn't just be a so-so exploration game in which we wait for the shadow parts. Glad you liked them, though. Regardless of my opinions, all the devs are clearly working hard and deserve an audience.

    My favorite indies were:

1.) Dive Kick - Brings all the intensity of a hardcore fighter without the need to study or learn a character, and has an awesome sense of humor. I love when genres are boiled down to their core like this.

2.) Octodad: Dadliest Catch - Probably the most I've enjoyed just the raw feel of a control setup since Super Mario 64. It just feels like it should, which is to say it feels like you're a creature that needs extreme focus and effort just to barely behave like a human.

3.) The Swapper - Dead Space atmosphere meets the "puzzle room" setup of games like Braid and Portal. Yeah, sign me up.

I missed Quadrilateral Cowboy at the show but I hear great things.

I didn't play as many Indie games this time around, but I did enjoy my time with Dive Kick (so great being able to actually play this instead of just watching it on live streams during fighting game tournaments) and Legend of Dungeon.

    Octodad, obviously.

    ...and Legend of Dungeon.

That game is beautiful. And merciless.

I felt like divekick wasn't that original though. not that that's bad but I feel like I generally go to indies for their obscurity and uniqueness. Still didn't look bad. Octodad was in fact pretty cool. Didn't see Legend of Dungeon...

I really enjoyed Organ Trail and then I really liked Don't Starve. Looking forward to picking both of those up.

    In no particular order...

I somehow missed Electronic Super Joy at the show, but I just looked-up the trailer. Looks excellent, thanks for the heads-up.

I bought the first Dragon Fantasy for iOS after playing it at PAX. It's a clever tribute to 8-bit RPGs. Be sure to check it out if you're interested in the sequel. I talked to one of the devs at the show, and he said the plan is for each sequel to progress through the console generations. I told him to keep it real when they get to 32-bit and not skimp on the polygon seams and texture distortion.

A.N.N.E. looked pretty neat. I'm interested in trying that out when he's got it available. The dev was a cool dude too.

The bearded dev? I asked him if the main character was modeled after him :D.

Hah, yes, and I almost asked him the same thing but got sidetracked. What did he say?

He didnt confirm nor deny it, just chuckled a bit and said that they do look pretty similar.

I'm trying to remember one game/developer that was buried deep within the indie section. It was more or less a prototype, and the table was basic: two guys and a tv. It was a Street Fighter-esque game that was still in production. The guys had no business cards and I don't remember anything more than what I just described.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about?? Thanks!!

@kid_nyc I remember that game, but the name is not coming to me. I want to say it had "Strike" in the title...

EDIT: Or was it Fearless Night? http://shoryuken.com/2013/04/02/the-fighting-games-of-pax-east-2013-fearless-night/

I talked to him for quite a while. His name is Mo Breton. My Pax buddy and I did a quick interview with him. It's on page 4 of the Photo and Video thread. I don't think I'm allowed to post it again on this thread so here is the link.
