I would like Monster Hunter more if the games weren't still using a Playstation 2 engine and models that have been reskinned for the 8th time. Capcom refuses to make an actual new MH game when they can just recycle the same game endlessly and people will pay full price for it.
I just think MH's grind is just too hardcore. The amount of time you have to devote to get a full set from each monster. Also, I'm just not into the 30 min boss fights anymore. Yes, yes, this things become 15 mins affair when you're that good. Alas, I'm not that good.

Damn. I pulled up a trailer, and you're not kidding. I'm not that uppity about graphics, but that's the definition of "phoning it in".

Uh, Tri was a whole new engine, with all new monsters. They rebuilt weapon/monster collision from the ground up. So I don't know what you're talking about, except that the core gameplay is the same. Except that they also added underwater fights to Tri, and MH4 has vertical surfaces and monster climbing.
So... yeah, what you said isn't actually true! I guess you still use big weapons to fight monsters. It is a Monster Hunter game.
If Gabe didn't like the game and only played it 30 minutes, how come he gave it a check on the PAR game guide?
Probably changed his mind? It happens! Also, I thought the check was more along the lines, we are playing these games not like YOU SHOULD BUY THESE GAMES.

I have less issue with his opinion of the game, I mean whatever MH isn't for everybody and they tend to start off really slow so it's not like I blame him, especially given his rationale in the news post.
So much as the fact that I think they forgot to write a joke.
It's true; MH is kinda its own thing, and really doesn't spend a lot of time making accommodations. If you're in to what it has to give, it's great. If you're not, it's not.
Soooo he played it for 30ish minutes and then gave up?
Not to be "That guy" but Monster Hunter only truly becomes fun when you start fighting monsters the size of ATV troop land carriers and 747's
I'd argue the game doesn't really become "Fun" until you start fighting Royal Lundroth and Barroth's, the first large monsters in the game where you need to know actual situational awareness and just can't ROLL ROLL ROLL when they start to barely turn towards you.
Only then do all the games true mechanics come out, which is why Barroth is considered the "Wall" in new monster hunter games, because the game stops being a cakewalk at that point
EDIT: Yes, I am aware this only really occurs by hour 6+ in the game, but like I said, this is the game becomes incredibly fun and not just fighting oversized bears and ostriches

If a game needs 6+ hours of notfun invested to receive any fun, that makes it a bad game.

Explain the popularity of EVE online
Also those six hours of "Not fun" it teaching you all the basics of the game, which is incredibly complex deep down, and you literally have to master what one of 5+ openers you will move, which of the 5+ combo's you will execute, and judging on how a monster flinches which of up to 7+ evade maneuvers you should be pulling off, all of this for the games 10+ weapons
Again, Barroth is a wall cause you just can't run up and smack him, you actually need to use the incredibly deep combat system
I'm going to call it guys, this is just one big April Fool's Day joke.

It's definitely not ideal that Monster Hunter takes awhile to get into.
But there is a lot of stuff it has to teach you, and I can't really think of a "better" way to handle the early game learning phase.
I definitely wouldn't say it's 6+ hours though, I'd say 2-3 maybe? And even that may seem like a lot of immediate downtime once you start the game, but you only ever really have to do it once, and then once you're past that the game has hundreds of hours of stuff to offer. Or if you're insane like me, thousands.
EDIT: But yeah, again, MH isn't for everybody and I absolutely acknowledge that. I can easily look from outside and see loads of stuff that would probably bug different people about the game, despite my absolute love of it.

I very much doubt that anyone new to MH would be able to or even want to get in the meat of the game if the first village quest was "Go Hunt a Rathian."
The situation actually reminds me of another PA comic:
You start small because for the uninitiated and unprepared, Monster Hunter devours your dreams.
It's perfectly okay to have tried it and simply not to be able to get into it too, though. It tends to click or it doesn't.
Video games are just like Books or Movies when it comes to attracting their audience. For gabe, he likes games, books, or movies that imeditly grab his attention. For Tycho, he's willing to look past the boring begining to see what the game/movie/book has to offer. I realy like MH but at least he understands that it's because of HIS likes and dislikes that he can't get into the game. Like i say all the time, If you only play CoD all day, then this game isn't for you.
Monster Hunter 3's graphics are pretty poor, but the monsters' animations are very nice. Monsters become haggard as the battle progresses; they salivate, pant and limp. They also vocalize, stumble and roll around, which makes them seem like real animals.
Another thing I like about monster hunter is how the mechanics reenforce the struggle necessary in taking down a large animal. I like playing with the great sword (which can take 1.5 seconds to swing), and trying to get one step ahead of the monster in order to get a hit. A good hunt will actually tire me out, because I tense up when my character is swinging or trying to dodge.
Monster Hunter does a huge number of things wrong though, and I while I understand that MH is a game series that doesn't care if you like it, I wish they would at least try to address these issues...
- I wish you could kill a cool monster in the solo campaign within 1 hour out of the gate
- Harvesting and combining is cool, but don't force me to spend 10 years listening to everyone in town (i.e. the dialog is overly verbose)
- Underwater battles lack a sense of depth, so it's very hard to tell when something is in range
- The dialog box in the Wii U version is stupid small
I still absolutely love the game though. Nothing beats fighting a Barroth for 20 minutes and then cutting off its stupid club tail.

Surprised he loved Ni no Kuni then.
