[Disney closes Lucas Arts] 1313 and First Assault cancelled
Staff were involved of the shutdown this morning, according to a reliable Kotaku source. Some 150 people were laid off, and both of the studio's current projects--Star Wars: First Assault and Star Wars 1313--were cancelled.
"It is worth noting that we are looking for proven external partners who can help us provide video games to our fans. We still believe in the video game industry, we still will provide Star Wars games, we're just looking at different models rather than internal production... They're evaluating everything. There's always a possibility that it [Star Wars 1313] can still come out via licensing."

This news made me dizzy for a second. God, I was really hoping Disney would've breathed new life into LucasArts. I knew it was on its way to the shitter but... They didn't even give it a chance.
LucasArts might not have been itself for awhile but they were capable of great things when given the chance. I didn't wish them this fate.
Also, now my chances for a Gladius sequel have gone from 1% to 0.1% which is not cool.
Edit: I can still remember buying a package of Lucasarts games when I was younger, one of my first game purchases made with my own money. It had Dark Forces, Afterlife, Full Throttle, Monkey Island 1&2, The Dig and Outlaws (I think, or a demo for it at least).

I wonder if they'll license 1313 out to Eidos. :V
The studio closing, to me, has nothing to do with, "Oh no we won't get any more games from those guys." We pretty much already weren't. It's just a symbolic thing. I grew up digesting content from that company. That's all it is at this point - a suckerpunch to my nostalgia.

Wow, they are really serious about wiping the slate clean with Episode VII.
Clone Wars cancelled, 1313 now canned. Is The Old Republic next?

No, because it is a licensed property. This is where the discussion is at in the industry thread. Disney is into licensing things rather than producing for them internally.
Lucasarts was great at doing their archive packs. It was a good way to keep their past games noticed. Sad to see it go, but it seemed more like just a label in the past 10 years or so anyway. It is all good as long as Double Fine does not go under. Also, Big Finish and Pinkerton Road are out there. So, the adventure greats are not done yet.
Okay well LucasArts...
Is that a place where over the years a completely unique collection of talent has gathered? The truth is that every single talent that ever ended up there has left long ago!
Let's face it, closing down LucasArts is understandable, even though I would have been curious about 1313, LucasArts has long lost the benefit of the doubt.
In fact that opens up plenty of licenses for games that people want to see.

Man, that's a bummer. I was looking forward to 1313. I doubt we will see another Star Wars game before Star Wars Episode VII: The Newest Subtitle - The Game.
Also, nostalgia. Those classic games were awesome.
Silver lining: There is a greater-than-zero chance that someone could license the X-Wing/TIE Fighter franchise. Meaning a greater-than-zero chance we will ever see that series again.
Sam & Max Hit the Road.
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.
Full Throttle.
Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle.
Grim Fandango.
The Dig.
MULTIPLE Star Wars games.
All of it now officially history. I don't quite know what to say except screw the financially-obsessed, bottom-line driven companies ruining all our childhoods and our favorite media. I'm actually somewhat numb to it all at this point.

I know it hurts
But look at your list, and then attach the year of release to each of those titles
Don't blame this on Disney, LucasArts just sucks!
Take Sam&Max, LucasArts cancelled the sequel and laid off the people who worked on it. Those very same people later made the Sam&Max series we know at Telltale and quite successfully so!

Well, on the plus side, it's not like they went back in time and took those games away from us. Childhood (or teen years for some of us) are still intact in our memories. I agree with the anger behind the hyperbole, though. Now that I think about it, Rogue Squadron was one of the better games on the Gamecube. Maaaaaaaaan... I want another one of those.

I'd advise thinking twice about that considering how many LP's you've left hanging at this point, Hen. :P
Still, this industry these days; it's news like this that'll probably wind up scaring away all the up-and-coming new talent, leaving only the jaded veterans left wondering when they'll be next to get the axe. Let's hope that won't be the case.

Oh people still remember that.
Well I'll just play it and enjoy it to myself because Afterlife was the shit!

I pretty much lost all hope in Lucasarts when I saw the leaked footage for Battlefront 3 that was being worked on by Free Radical. They had some great ideas, and despite some misses on their own IPs lately, I think they would have made a winning combination with the Star Wars universe and we may have finally gotten a Battleront game that lived up to its potential.
So no, I'm not going to mourn the Lucasarts that just got closed down. The Lucasarts that I loved has been gone for long time.
What I'd like to happen: Some of the older franchises that have been sat on for awhile are licensed to the guys who orginally made them (Telltale, Double Fine etc) and GOG are allowed to touch up some of the older games so they'll work on modern machines
What will probably happen: Star Wars end up being licensed to Activision who makes dozens of forgettable or terrible games and we all die a little inside
Don't get me wrong - this sucks, and I enjoyed many Lucas Arts titles over the years.
But if at least one of the bastards responsible for Star Wars: Rebellion got canned as a result of this, I'll count it as a partial win.

It's always sad to see people lose their jobs, regardless on whether you liked the games the company made. It's heartwarming to see other companies are already posting job offers.

I need to dig up my LucasArts Archives Volume III and try to get that working on my PC. And I guess The Dig as well, heh.

Rebellion owned. Catching the Empire with their pants down and taking over Coruscant with just a small task force was one of my favorite childhood gaming memories.
EDIT: Just remembered about the old LucasArts catalogs, and how I used to love going through them as a kid. The Sam and Max comic they had in there was pretty funny from what I remember.

Holy shit, Disney axes the Clone Wars cartoon? Wasn't that super popular?
Look at it this way, though:
Lucas Arts has been struck down, but will become more powerful than we can possibly imagine.
I don't think anyone was surprised Disney got rid of the Clone Wars show - it was on Cartoon Network which is a direct competitor to Disney's various networks. I mean, why let you have that to watch when you could be watching Disney's hit "Dog with a Blog".
Disney does have Phineas & Ferb and Gravity Falls so they're not all bad...

1313 looked neat.
Sucks, but oh well, maybe they'll license it out to a studio that can actually take advantage of the franchise.

Which I would murder for an HD remake ONLY if they keep the music intact.
