Twas the Night Before PAXMas: Pre-PAX Boardgame Meetup

edited August 2013 in PAX West
Pre-PAX Board Game Night at the Seattle Sheraton Hotel

ANNOUNCEMENT: Please remember that the meetup is upstairs this year on the 2nd floor and won't be as readily visible from the hotel lobbies as it has been in past years. The hotel has asked that we endeavor to use the rooms provided instead of the lobbies to keep fire codes under control. If we max out upstairs, then go ahead and move downstairs. If you know there's room upstairs, please let anyone you see playing in the lobbies know about the rooms on the 2nd floor.

WHAT: A coordinated meetup the night before PAX for anyone with board games, or anyone who wants to play board games. It's a great way to kick off PAX and meet some new friends. This is an All-Ages event.

WHERE: Downtown Seattle Sheraton Hotel: 1400 6th Ave. Second Floor, in Grand Ballroom B and Willow Room. Look below under the COOL SHIT section for amazing details.

Sheraton+Board+Game+Night+Map+2013.jpg

WHEN: Thursday August 29 @ 4:00 PM until late, late, late. The rooms will stay open until 2:00 AM, at which time any remaining games will need to be moved to the lobbies. (We're working on getting the rooms to stay open later, and will post updates if so)

ALTERNATE GAME MEETUPS
Gold-Class Sky-High Tabletop Gaming at the Columbia Center Tower Club

COOL SHIT
There will be between 375 - 450 seats available.
A Cookie Brigade Station will be available for you to get delicious noms, and Bakers Dropoff!
There will be a bar upstairs.
There may be food service upstairs, details forthcoming.

THE RULES
- Being good guests is critical to this event's welcome at the hotel. Don't be a dick.
- The hotels usually give us amazing space and service for free. The best way to show your appreciation is to support the hotel bar and restaurant while you're there.
- The hotel management has a lot of things to juggle that night, including non-PAX events and fire code concerns. If you get asked by the hotel staff to move, please be respectful and honor their request.

HOW IT WORKS

On the Thread
1. If you have games to bring, post what you plan to have on hand that night.
2. If you're looking to play a specific game, please post your request.

Once Present at the Hotel
1. Your coordinator for the night is LexiconGrrl. You can find her at the Cookie Brigade Table if you have any questions.
2. If you've got a game and are looking for players, put the box top of the game vertically on your table. This is the universal sign for "I don't care who you are, please join us"
3. If you're looking to join a game, look for vertical box tops.
4. Use the twitter hashtag #SheratonTabletop to find or advertise games.
5. If you want to leave your game for checkout by other people, you can leave it at the check in table. Make sure you leave your contact information inside the box, since you might want to leave before your game does. DISCLAIMER: Although we strive to communicate the principles of respecting other peoples' property, leaving your games for checkout is AT YOUR OWN RISK. This is a volunteer event, and we don't police the crowd.

Are we looking at getting the conference rooms on the ground floor again? That seemed to work really well last year. Or could we possibly get one of the bigger rooms on the second/mezzanine floor?

Maybe. I've reached out to Sheraton management but it's really early. I think there's going to be an even better setup this year, but mum's the word until I get confirmation. That may not happen for a few weeks/months yet...

Ok cool. I know it's better to get on these things early in case other groups outside of us want to use those rooms, but this is definitely "sun is barely cresting above the horizon" early.

My only gripe from last year was being turfed out of a room as it hit midnight. People were forced to rush the end of their games :( Hopefully that won't happen again!

Oh and remember, you get your Forum Badges from this event from me, their creator :)

Duly noted, thanks for the feedback. We'll work with the management to get better details on the timing of the event and make sure those details are communicated better.

I fully intend to show up to this earlier this year. Flew in pretty late last year and most people's games were wrapping up by the time we showed up.

That's okay - it's a really friendly crowd, and people are usually happy to teach someone a new game. Just don't be shy about approaching a group and asking if you can join!

Nope, but keep in mind that it's going to be close quarters - we'll be fitting as many seats as we can into the space we're given so you may have trouble finding a stash point for a large stack of games.

Wasn't able to do this last year, however hoping to make it this year with 3 groomsmen in tow. Trying to decide what games to bring, so if anyone likes one of these or would like to try, let me know:

-Zombicide (probably most fun group game and easy to pick up)
-Merchants and Marauders (4 player max, BIG learning curve)
-Last Night on Earth (with ALL expansions)

This is totally one of the reasons I convinced all my friends to suffer and cram themselves into rooms at the Sheraton instead of in a bigger spacious place like the homewood suites (besides the fact that that place is uphill and when I'm tired at the end of a fun night I hate hills)! Haha I'm so excited for tabletop games @ the Sheraton! Wouldn't miss it for anything!

One of my most treasured memories from 2012 PAX Prime was playing Battlestar Galactica at the PPBGN with a bunch of complete strangers into the early hours, this after a 10 hour flight from London too!

Those who are new to board game meetups, I suggest you get some experience in as many games as possible so that you'll be able to dive in to some when you arrive at the PPBGN. I can say this as that's how I played BSG with a bunch of strangers as I already knew how to!

Had an unexpectedly great time last year. I got to witness the insanity of CAH and the ridiculousness that was a seemingly never-ending game of Dicecapades. It would be great to see others play a game of Pandemic because my friends and I are never sure if we play it correctly. We always lose... but I'm starting to think that's really the outcome for most players.
Looking forward to another awesome night this year. Will be bringing another suitcase of board games, so all should be good. =)

Ha, awesome. The pic in the OP is the lid to either my copy of Arkham Horror or Last Night on Earth!

As with last year, I'll probably be out on the town for the majority of Thursday night drinking and carousing, but I will bring my board games for other people to play! These will include and perhaps exceed...

    -Arkham Horror
    -Last Night on Earth
    -Cards Against Humanity
    -Zombie Dice

Thanks for running this again LexiconGrrl!

Edit: And while I was inebriated at the time, yes that is how bad my handwriting looks in general.

It's PAX. It will be easier to find a game of CAH than it will to find a restroom. Also, confusing the two is highly discouraged.

I was thinking about this. Would people prefer a more eclectic selection of games, or is seeing the old favorites (zombie dice, CAH, etc...) more desired?

And I know it's early as all hell but be bringing the following:

    - 3 maybe 4 standard/type2 MTG decks
    - A CAH set provided there aren't 10 plus sets already there.

YAY MTG. 2 of my group members love MTG. I was wondering if they'd get a chance to play with new people at PAX (since I rarely play with them). I'll tell them to bring their decks. :)

Not sure if this is your or their first year, but last year thet had a big playing area last year in the convention center. They were running tournaments and people were just playing all weekend. Spent most of my time not in the expo hall or a panel in there
