To be clear, I don't think the two share a lot of specific design things. But a certain contingent of people on the Internet latched on to Renamon as almost a mascot and that's what I see happening here. I agree with folks that this probably had no impact on the design process, but the quality is still there...
Oh and before I come off as insensitive (probably too late there), I've got no specific beef with any particular group of people, but there are things I've seen that I don't like being reminded of there. Really it's a personal problem more than anything.

edit edit took out the doubly unnecessary snark but still I can't think of a reason to give any real thought to people drawing porn of a thing
I'm not concerned, just saying it's a thing that will happen. I absolutely think the developers shouldn't (and honestly don't I think) give a crap about what weird fan-art gets made.

Ehh, people who turn this stuff into porn don't need an excuse. When the developers design the pokemon, they're not designing with that audience in mind.
A lot of the human girls, on the other hand (elesa, cynthia, the various female protagonists)...they probably knew exactly what they were doing.

gen 3 starters are leagues better than gen 6 and certain ones are probably better than 4 or 5
the only gen 3 starter that might hold a candle to gen 4 or 5 is blaziken because it is a fiery kung fu rooster, or possibly Grovyle (but not sceptile)
Gen 4 is the only game where I didn't choose a fire-type starter.
yeah, same here. saw turtwig and was like "yeah, yeah alright, i'm down with this i think" and then saw torterra and was like "this isn't even a choice anymore."
I initially favored Fennekin and wasn't fond of Froakie. Their evolutions reversed my opinion entirely (although Froakie has yet to stick the landing). I continue to be ambivalent to the grass type per us

Torterra is awesome, but it unfortunately existed in a game with Sten from Breath of Fire and a goddamn Emperor penguin. In a game that was barely compelling enough to play once

Nope, just like 6 inches taller. couple pounds heavier. maybe it has a second horn.
Also as for fire starter: bit more witch then i was hoping for, and i'm not crazy about the ear hair. will have to see how the grass guy turns out.
