Welcome to the world of Pokémon!
Pokémon are creatures who are mainly used for being enslaved and
made to battle to the death, but some people just think they're cute and keep them as pets. Upon reaching a certain level, Pokémon evolve... Or, well, saying they change their form is more accurate, as the Game Theorist explains:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JF2mRcAoXLQ
But we'll still call them evolutions, for simplicity's sake, and also because it's the official term (also, the changes they suffer do count as evolutions, just not necessarily Darwinian evolution.
Anyway...
If you're planning to get Pokémon X or Y, you need to be prepared for a ton of mechanic changes, as big the ones in second, third, and fourth generations.
First of all, XY will feature Dig.... Err... Mega Evolutions:
Mega Evolution (Japanese: メガシンカ Mega Evolution) is a transformation method found only in the Kalos region. Mega Evolutions are identified by having "Mega" in front of their name.
In order to undergo a Mega Evolution, the Pokémon must be holding the applicable Mega Stone. The player must use their Mega Ring, which contains a Key Stone, to resonate with the Mega Stone held by their Pokémon to trigger Mega Evolution. Mega Evolution can only occur in battle and disappears after the battle is over.
Korrina knows secrets about Mega Evolution. The Tower of Mastery is also related to Mega Evolution in some way.
Here are some trailers showcasing Mega Evolution:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-7F_CtogpMhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BftrqE2CQiQhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blhaSxUJ-OU
Some Pokémon even have different Mega Evolutions depending on the specific stone you use (and they're X or Y exclusives).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WFoT9oGtfc
Upon the release of the game, you get a Torchic holding the stone that turns its final evolution, Blaziken into...
Mega Blaziken, fuck yeah.
They're also introducing a new type, the Fairy type, which is strong against Fighting, Dragon, and Dark-type Pokémon, while it's weak against Poison, and Steel, and actually takes no damage from Dragon-type attacks! Also, it deals weak damage when up against Fire, Steel, and Poison. I guess they liked Ferngully.
A few of the revealed Fairy-type Pokémon are these:
Sylveon, a new Eevee evolution, who gets Cute Charm as its ability and it's rumored to have Multiscale as its Dream World ability.
Xerneas, the X Pokémon mascot uber.
There are plenty to choose from, and some older Pokémon, like Jigglypuff and Gardevoir have turned into Fairy types (in the case of Gardevoir, it still retains its Psychic type, though).
Metagross fans, though, prepare to be disappointed, because Steel no longer resists Dark and Ghost types. Bummer.
And for those of you who always complained about how hard it was to train the
Effort Values of Pokémon (regardless of how easy it kept getting as each generation got released), they made them even easier now, which comes to a blessing even for those of us who got used to doing that, with the introduction of Super Training:
Super Training (Japanese: スーパートレーニング Super Training) is a method of Pokémon training introduced in the Pokémon X and Y games. It allows players to train their Pokémon on the touch screen from anywhere at any time. Super Training allows the player to not increase their Pokémon's level, but instead raise its stats. It is possible to access Super Training via the Player Search System and Pokémon-Amie.
And speaking of Pokémon-Amie, you won't need to play
Hey You! Pikachu anymore in order to attempt to bond with Pokémon.
Pokémon-Amie (Japanese: ポケパルレ Poké Parley) is a feature in Pokémon X and Y that allows the player to develop stronger bonds with their Pokémon. It uses the touch screen to allow players to pet, feed, and play with Pokémon currently on their team. Players may interact with their Pokémon by petting or feeding them via the touchscreen or mimicking their movements using the camera. There are three new options to choose from for the player: play, hunger and friendliness, and there is a display screen showing the options. Large Pokémon, like Tyranitar and Snorlax, take up both screens of the 3DS.
Playing with a Pokémon increases its friendship with the player, and allows it to avoid attacks and land critical hits more often.
Many other new features make X and Y worthy of being played, like every Pokémon that participates in battle getting full Experience (and the same goes for the EXP All item), being able to ride Pokémon to go up ledges (FINALLY!!), the ability to customize the trainer's appearance, and being able to sit.
Pokémon X and Y will be available on October 12th both physically and specially, I mean, digitally. The digital release's size will be 1.7GB.
(Also, Pikachu's cry will now be the voice of
Ikue Otani, I thought you should know)
Those of you who wish to get into competitive battling should breed new pokés or wipe your current ones' EVs and then check their IVs:
IV CalculatorTO ALL THOSE CHEATERS THAT ATTEMPT TO CLONE POKéMON BY COPYING YOUR DIGITAL GAME'S SAVE FILE: The game will link your save to an ID in the 3DS's system memory, so if you try to restore your save, it won't recognize it.
For those who wish, for some strange reason, erase your game in order to start a new one from scratch, you have to press Up + B + X at the title screen to delete the save file.
G&T Pokémon trainer Friend Code list If you want to add yourself, use this form.
Remember to notify everyone you add that you've done so. The best way is to add an @ just before their name. If the name has spaces, type the name inside "quotation marks". Remember to also leave your trainer name. Don't attempt to add everyone, as the 3(2)DS only allows to register up to 100 people.
WARNING! DON'T SAVE OUTSIDE IN LUMIOSE CITY!
This seems pretty important and something that should be in the OP or otherwise posted often:

WARNING: Do NOT Save Outside in Lumiose City!
I saved near a cab in Lumiose City and now whenever I try to restart my game it immediately freeezes. It loads my trainer and all of my clothes as well as the buildings and their lighting effects, but none of the objects in the streets or the textures on the buildings show up.
Pokémon-Amie is also frozen on my bottom-screen without loading anything and the game won't return to the Home menu when I push my button. I can hard-shutoff, but the 3DS internal software is completely frozen.
The only evidence I can find that anyone's had similar trouble is a single YouTube video uploaded by someone who speaks some Asian language.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzxQhXyLJQ0
Anyways, I'm posting this both in hopes of informing everyone else playing the game, and in hopes of finding a fix that doesn't involve deleting my save.
Be careful guys.
For those wanting to EV train with a method faster than Super Training:

So does everyone usually swap out the ditto too until you're breeding children with each other? Ditto's just to kick it off?
Characteristics don't seem reliable enough to me. If I toss any pokemon who doesn't have a potentially 31 characteristic, then I miss out on the possibility of getting one with all 30s, which I would totally be happy with. Or all 29s, etc. I'm not out for a perfect team, just a pretty dang good one.
M... Maybe?

Also, it seems like this game is the first to make it really easy for the masses to either catch 'em all or at least easily get the 'mons they want without much hassle. Which is only a good thing IMHO.
Also from the last thread:
I'm pretty sure "night" begins about 7 or 8pm, real-world time. I usually play when I get home from work, and it's still daylight then, and then it gradually turns to dusk and then night. So yeah, real world clock.

X_X
as if the world wasn't dark enough as it is...
I'm does. I've been to Lumiose City at night. I thought the time should be tied to your time, but last night it was like 8:00pm in my game and still light out. So, I dunno, it is weird?
On a related note. Weather is kind of neat. I've noticed that it doesn't just rain in one particular area or route, but will instead rain all over the place. Hell, yesterday it was raining practically all day in my game.
edit- Yeah it seems to stay daylight out longer then dark. A lot of games just do a 12 hour cycle, but here it doesn't seem to get full dark until about 9:00pm and it seems to be daylight by at least 6:00am.
Hmmmm... that's weird. I'm 22 hours in and I've played on and off from 5pm to 12am every night and I've never noticed it become nighttime.
Is it really subtle?
Because now I'm worried!

Is it ever better to have both parents wearing power items to guarantee two 31s instead of one holding an Everstone? Then just ignore the children with bad natures?
You can only pass one stat with Power items. If you use two, you will get one of the two at random.
Though a good indication is that all the buildings' windows in towns glow with light during "night". Which makes Lumiose and the Prism Tower neat.
Would it have killed Nintendo to have a 12 hour clock option?
Is this some kind of international discrepancy?
Oh good to know.
Me too. Are you going to use this calc?
too bad the servers aren't holding up, or at least they weren't last night.

Is there any way to see how close an O-power is to leveling up? Or if it's at max?
THIS GAME IS SO GOOD! :rotate:
Yeah, it's really convenient.
The best hat in the world.
No, Dittos can't breed. That's why a good one is gold, because it had to be hand-caught.
I haven't gotten there yet--I think it's in the dojo at Luminose, though.
There's a video if you want to spoil it:

Though not all my pictures were uploaded yet. This one isn't even my first nor is it my latest, but hey it looks nice. :P
I love when developers put stuff like that into games. Like the serial killer in GTA.

re: Dittos in the Friend Safari, the third Pokemon in each zone is only unlocked when that person beats the Champion, which many people haven't done yet. That third Pokemon might be one of the rarer ones like Ditto.
Ooo, I am now! Thanks!
On the topic of uploading photos, I've just been using this tool. You have to use the 3DS web browser, though, which has never once been a pleasant experience for me, so I'll look into the Global Link business...

Whoa WHAT. So I should keep cutting my hair short and it'll grow back longer in different ways?
They do for both! Also if the pass powers were anything to go by, probably three levels for most abilities.
No, it's just that after getting a haircut X number of times, you unlock ponytail and pigtails as options, on the girl at least.
