Again, Phoenix going into an isolated place without backup to talk to the suspected murderer. Good thing Gumshoe was there.
Edgeworth making the save and letting you get to the truth! Neato!
And then he doesn't want to see you again because you cause "feelings". I can see where the fanfiction comes from.
I'm not sure if being somebody's true friend in Japan is quite that familiar and we just have decades of homophobia over here making us think that that's how gay people act or what.
I think it may be a cultural thing? But I mean, I have friends I'm not embarrassed to admit I have (non-romantic) feelings for.

I totally get that, that it is possible to have platonic friendships and conflicted feelings that don't involve wanting the D, but I am also familiar enough with internet culture to see how it can be interpreted as so. It's not an indictment of the game, but of the internet.
Oh I'm not calling you out or anything! I was just idly speculating over whether or not it's a cultural difference or if they were intentionally written to appeal to the people likely to ship.

Translation may play a part as well. I recall from previous experiences that typos aside there are some curious choices, like "it happened half a year ago" over "six months ago". Half a year is an accurate translation, but in my circles it is far more common to use the six months line.
You can only play it if you beat the first case. Lucky for me, I'm just after finishing the second case, so I can start it and play it pretty much in order.
That was really abrupt. Ordinarily you'd do the whole "This is who the real culprit is" but it just kinda...ended. I'm mighty suspicious of that lighter as real evidence though. At this point I'm thinking that Fulbright has either been duped, or is doing the duping. Either way I'm thinking that lighter is probably fake evidence. From the way Fulbright neglected to mention the results of the fingerprints until Blackquill asked (do they just keep the fingerprints of EVERYONE on file or something?) he's looking really goddamn suspicious. Maybe C5 will spread some light on that. Also did Blackquill's sister just not testify in court? I know she doesn't like the justice system and all, but surely she would be required to give testimony rather than just a written statement?
It would make sense for the case to end there since you have proven that Starbuck couldn't have done it, but you traditionally always find the true culprit and it's a bit odd not doing that for once.
Confronting the suspect again?! I know you're a newbie Phoenix, but come on, this has happened twice already!
I was a bit naggled by Von Karma being so insistent that the second bullet doesn't exist because it wasn't found and Phoenix beginning to doubt it himself. Good thing Mia helped you figure it out.
I like it when prosecution and defense trade rapid fire "OBJECTION!"s, it feels like the truth is surfacing faster, like when Von Karma was trying to prevent use of the metal detector.
Also, that breakdown is still as amazing as I remember it. Hell of a scheme too: Von Karma's so determined to get revenge on Edgeworth he was willing to lose a case if it meant he could guilt trip Edgeworth into confessing.
And Case 1-5:
So this is the DS exclusive case? It shows, the animations on the new characters are considerably more detailed.
Some bits were quite tedious, like having to watch that security video several times.
Gant has some balls, basically threatening Lana in open court if she testifies against him he'll have Ema charged. His super saiyan breakdown was amusing, but I liked his laughter better. Worth getting there.
I liked the part where Edgeworth is explaining the origin of the Chinese word for "contradiction", then Phoenix objects to it and "Cornered" starts up. Maybe because I love that song.
The script for the game has been pretty good, but there are some phrases that while technically correct, don't mesh with how I'd expect a natural English speaker to say it. In this case that would be "Damon Gant...the killer was you!" That kinda feels backwards. It's like how later games talk about stuff happening "half a year ago" instead of "six months ago".

It'll be interesting to see you run through JFA, as I consider that the weakest of the series.
Justice for all is the third game right? I recall thinking two of the cases were great and two were mediocre. Edit: Oh wait it's the second game? I recall it having the worst case in the series but all the other cases were alright.
So does this game finally give us another villain as good as Godot, or no

Basically the latter part of Case 4 is amazing but earlier on there are some stinkers logic wise. I also don't like the Magatama until Dual Destinies and the fact that profiles could be treated as evidence too.
My biggest dislike in JFA was how often you had to press statements in a certain order to progress. It happened all the goddamn time. Press the second sentence, then the fifth, then the first. THEN you can present evidence. It's really goddamn dumb.

Now that's just not true. Franziska bullies the witnesses and the judge to the complete exclusion of actually being a competent prosecutor. She has no talent for straight-up arguing a case. This makes her not very interesting to compete against. You don't outwit her so much as just wait until the judge decides to stop ignoring you. (And then there's Klavier, who is a decent enough person I guess, but he just flat-out does not care about being a prosecutor and that is bad news in a game where you spend the vast majority of your time arguing against a prosecutor.)
Simon is prone to occasional...outbursts, but apart from that, he's actually an incredibly honest and talented prosecutor. He doesn't conceal evidence or rig witnesses or anything; he just argues the most logically coherent case he can with the information he has. When a witness changes their story and screws up his argument, he doesn't get mad because they went off-script, he gets mad because they lied to him and caused him to waste time arguing for a bogus scenario. And then he rolls with the punches and comes up with an alternate, equally plausible argument that fits the newly-revealed facts. Note that he gets much, much angrier about being lied to by witnesses than he does about losing cases. He argues them to the end, but if he loses fair and square he's not going to throw a temper tantrum about it.
I'd go so far as to argue that Simon might be the strongest antagonist in the series in terms of providing an interesting challenge to the defense on a moment-to-moment basis in court (although his arc over the course of the whole game is definitely not as strong as Edgeworth's or Godot's).

He's also a convicted murderer in a game that is all about logic and has a key plot point being the disbarment of another character.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
I'm not saying that his backstory isn't silly. It's completely ridiculous. But lots of goofy stuff happens in Phoenix Wright. It's a goofy series. I consider how he interacts with the rest of the cast (and, as a prosecutor, Phoenix specifically) to be more important in judging his effectiveness as an antagonist. Franziska physically abusing the judge and Klavier switching teams in the middle of every case without either of them being disbarred is also goofy, AND those traits interfere with their ability to be interesting in their role in the narrative. Godot having a sci-fi eye-replacement visor in a setting where people still regularly submit video footage on VHS is goofy but not in a way that takes away from the experience in any way.
Playing fast and loose with suspension of disbelief is just a thing that's going to happen here. You kind of have to pick your battles in that respect. Blackquill is a logical absurdity in realistic terms, but I'd say he's par for the course in the context of the actual setting.

Black quill being a prosecutor broke the internalized "rules" for how their messed up world works.

well time to drop everything
I forgot to check, but I think it was less than 200?
The whole thing downloaded in under a minute for me
118, so I still have room on my SD Card, natch.
"Hey, I wasn't a hobo that whole time"
"A tornado of sharks? Not even Hollywood could conjure up something that insane."
I think I'm really going to like this case.

At some point, Justice for All will follow!
Also, this Youtube video is borderline NSFW, but highly amusing and well crafted.
eh
he's better than von karma and klavier at any rate

You're right - early morning posting
yeah
I like franziska but she's kind of an idiot
same with klavier
Oh god, I had actually forgotten about that.
big spoilers
HELLO ROBOTS
also i totally guessed fulbright, albeit by process of elimination
there wasn't anyone else in the character list who could believably have done it
Nothing beats the first game, but Godot at least made sense and didn't have a frankly stupid bit.
This guy is just as bad as f. karma.
