[Industry Thread] Doom: The Next Generation - Exclusive to the Wii U
...and now Angry Birds will be in Puzzle & Dragons. If there's another game this eager to whore itself out I haven't heard of it.
Define "whore itself out"
Because, well, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Mario Party, Mario Basketball, Smash Bros, Mario Soccer, Mario RPG...
Ed: all of which, to be clear, were great games.
Does Mario appear in games from other publishers as a main selling point?
I don't remember if the Olympics game was first party or not, so... maybe once?
NBA Street V3 and SSX on Tour for the Gamecube both had Mario Characters as its main selling feature. Im surprised that Nintendo hasn't tried this feature again with 3rd party titles on the Wii U as a selling point.
There's a lot of Nintendo stuff in Tekken and Scribblenauts' Wii U iterations. It's not quite wha you're talking about, Link was great in Soul Caliber 2.
Beat me on Wii U: Raybies

It pains me to my core that we aren't getting Soulcalibur 2 HD on WiiU.
Gametrailers was for next and current gen. Apparently embargoes are out on reviewing the One version, so they showed the PS4.
Got a 7.
Eurogamer gave it a 7 too, concluding with:
Infinity Ward had a chance here to throw down the gauntlet for the next hardware generation, to set the new standard, to show that this hugely popular, much derided behemoth can dance to a different tune. It's chosen to play a Greatest Hits package instead.
I wonder if the fact that it's cross gen led it to ending up like this.
They knew they weren't going to be able to really impress on the new platforms just yet. They knew that a lot of people would be buying it for the new platforms, and this is one of those rare times when they're on more platforms than usual. Why waste time making it exceptionally good, when you're so ubiquitous at the moment?
Best to pour effort into the game that is intended to be next-gen only, the one that has to sell people on a new console.
Call of Duty: Ghosts, however, with its slapdash campaign and unambitious multiplayer, contains enough factory-standard cynicism to earn itself plenty of scorn. Nothing Ghosts does is especially bad, but nothing Ghosts does is worth paying any attention to. It exists to exist, a stopgap bit of filler spat out as the industry transitions from one generation of consoles to another.
Reviews seem in line with all the other games, with the usual surly websites handing out the lower scores (Polygon, giant bomb, Destructoid)

Game is still gonna sell a billion dollars worth in one day like usual. It's when we start seeing COD sell less than 500 million in the first week that Activision starts panicking, and we're a ways off from that day.

The stuff in Tekken is wonderful - and the return of Tekken Ball was great as well.
I think a Nintendo Themed Minecraft with some form of using 3DS/2DS for same room multiplayer would be one of the best ways to save the system and would likely sell a few handhelds as well. Imagine an option to replace skeletons and creepers with goombas and koopas and building your own castles surrounded with mushrooms or pipes, towns filled with toad people, the nether replaced with lava filled Bowser areas - it would be batnuts insane.

but yeah totally click bait, he didn't give it the Internet Required 8 or above

It is also entirely possible that the series is on the road to obsolescence. Tony Hawk Pro Skater, Guitar Hero... all games that eventually lost their original developers, were turned into yearly cash-ins, and oversaturated the market with titles until the series more or less died...
... wait a second, I think they were all published by Activision too. Huh.

That's fine - just seemed that way from the vantage point of someone that doesn't read the site. Frankly I don't know who Jim Sterling is except that I just checked out Destructoid for the first time today and the site just seems all over the place on scoring. He can do what he wants score wise, just seems harsh for what seems like a mediocre review - but if they actually use the entire 1 - 10 scale than whatever.

It's a possibility. The market is saturated by CoD and Activision has Destiny on the way.

I've said this before, but I wonder if the increasing reluctance of companies to try new IP is going to eventually bite publishers in the ass, especially since the new consoles have an uphill battle in convincing people (who aren't us) they actually offer something new and cool worth paying for. I know I'm not the only one who looked at the launch lineup for both and went "meh."
Though this could give Titanfall a real chance of becoming big. Maybe Destiny too.
Why the crap did I ever make my original name "cloudeagle?"

I don't think anyone bought SSX on Tour or NBA Street just because it had Mario characters in it.
If one thing has become clear as we’ve been working on ID@Xbox, our independent developer self-publishing program for Xbox One, it’s that today’s independent game developers are using middleware to help realize their visions more than ever. Of course, middleware isn’t cheap.
One of the cool things about working at Microsoft is that we have access to pretty amazing resources. For independent developers though, tools like Unity on console can cost quite a bit.
We talked internally at ID@Xbox about ways we could help developers for Xbox One. Many developers we talk to are using Unity today to get up and running quickly, and to be able to harness the power of hardware and realize their creative visions without spending tons of time on technology development. We thought about paying for some developers’ Unity licenses but the more we talked about it, the more we felt paying for some developers’ licenses and not others just didn’t feel right.
To us, ID@Xbox is about providing a level playing field for all developers. So, we worked with Unity and we’re pleased to announce that, when released in 2014, the Xbox One add-on for Unity will be available at no cost to all developers in the ID@Xbox program, as will special Xbox One-only Unity Pro seat licenses for Xbox One developers in the ID@Xbox program.
...
If this was announced much earlier Microsoft might have gained some of the credibility Sony now has with indies. IMO of course.

This is going to be huge. Crazy huge.
I am not entirely sure why people think the landscape has been decided weeks before either system are in the hands of the gamers, and at least 5-7 years before the next iteration.
Some time in 2014, Unity, with a bunch of XBO specific APIs, and Microsoft Azure access, is going to be completely free for developers to build games on.

Let's play Mario Kart or something...
We'll see. I hope they have some sort of Quality Control in place for their games on the Indie market. XBLIG was riddled with absolute trash. And after a few weeks I stopped even looking there.

Well most people decided back in February when Sony trotted out a bunch of interesting and exciting indie developers and games at their PS4 reveal, while MS came out and gave a big old "meh" to the questions asked of it about indie development. Which they then back pedaled on and are now scrambling to get indie developers back on board with free tools like this.
I'm sure there will be some interesting indie titles eventually on XBO but they've burned a lot of bridges with that community who have basically said they're a nightmare to work with and not worth the headache. I'm sure "free software" will sway some back but they've already put themselves behind the 8 ball for no reason other than some weird sense of hubris.
People who actually really give a shit about indy games are buying them in Humble Bundles or over Steam. Neither system had any significant indy support this go-around outside of stuff that got on XBLA and indies still did just fine.
That still doesn't change how I feel. There needs to be some sort of quality assurance when it comes to putting games on either marketplace. XBLIG was a barren wasteland of garbage.

To be fair, that's only if you consider half-assed dating sims and controller vibrators to be garbage.

The game is getting mediocre reviews, and almost dipping into the Forbidden Numbers.
Are the reviews for the current-gen or next-gen versions?
... Maybe this explains why Activision's been marketing it as an inevitable, instead of hyping the game itself?
It's still probably going to sell really well, but that is surprising news.
Maybe it's the year journalism stops slobbering if nothing else. I think they're wise to the series' "emotional story" formula.
Got a 7.
Eurogamer gave it a 7 too, concluding with:
Oh god, I hope so! Although it'll probably sell great anyway.

And Jeff is actually a pretty big fan of CoD so seeing him give one a relatively low score is telling.
People who buy Call of Duty yearly don't pay attention to reviews. It's just a given that they will purchase it.
