anyone been to any halfway decent forums for info and chat about builds? the official forums are filled up with weeabos and i need a translator to figure out what they're talkin about.
tryin to decide between wiz/wiz/ele, ele/ele/wiz or musk/musk/wiz.
It's alright firekun, I was only interested to see the difference between the SG voices and the K2 voices.
Yes, the 'original' (since there seems to be several other persons doing factions here) faction is in Carracci.
For builds, scouts are a must for your first playthrough, unless you're planning to ask for a squad everytime you log on (and potions are expensive). After that any combination is viable, though I would not recommend 2 melees, since they'd have a hard time fighting flying enemies. I currently use a Scout/Fighter/Musk combo, and it's working out fairly well. Makes afk'ing troublesome due to the fighter moving away alot, but it's nice to have a tank for those tricky bosses (means I can tackle things at a slightly earlier level as well, though it'll take a ton of potions to slug it out sometimes).
I have just gotten to King's Garden, and investigate a little path on the map that doesn't seem to go anywhere. Sure enough, you can't follow the path past a certain point due to an invisible wall. However, there is a small stump there that you can interact with. I click on it, and it asks me what kind of monster do I want to summon. The first choice is a level 25 Abandoned Stone Gargoyle. I figure my party is 22, they should be able to take a single 25, even if it's an elite. Right?
Ahahahaha no.
It spawns like 500 of these things. I manage to barely kill all of them (involving a couple of deaths), take a breather, and then have a minor heart attack as THEY RESPAWN.
After wading through another wave, the timer on them runs out and they finally disappear.
Of course, what do I do after that? Do I go back to town and restock, while celebrating my epic slaughter?
No, being the masochist I am, I click on the stump again.
This time after I get slaughtered, I decide to take a break for a bit.
On an unrelated note, here is a pic I did of my family.
I'm also trying out the US version, and I might start up the NA branch of the guild if I can get into the game without too much lag and server problems.
Finally got my video card back up and running, yay for bad vram....
By the time I got back into the SG version about a week ago, it was unplayable due to lag. Haven't played since then, but I also realized that there's pretty much nothing to strive for past level 50-60 anyhow. As of now the gap from 60 to 100 is all (manual) grind with almost no reward (most stances at 25 already), with nothing in between.
Fun while it lasted though...maybe i'll check in on it in a half year or so and see how it goes then.
So, here are my initial impressions. I'm only at level 8, which by this games standard is nothing. These are *very* initial impressions.
1. The graphics are awesome. What's more amazing is that they run pretty damn smooth, and I don't have the latest and greatest or anything. I run it at 1280x1024, all settings maxed and it doesn't skip a beat (except network lag, X2 4800, 2G ram, 7600GT). Zooming in on combat is pretty sweet. Again, it's amazing how good they look and how well it runs. The one (kind of annoying) downside is that the draw distance is pretty damn short. The other thing is that I don't have many impressive skills, so I'm looking forward to a lot of really nice animations, and possibly some slowdown.
2. Combat is extremely fast paced. You don't fight a mob at a time, you fight like 10 of them. Again, makes #1 more impressive considering when leveling you have a ton of mobs and items on screen.
3. Having 3 characters to control/level is a hell of a lot more interesting than having one. Instead of 1 skill tree, you've got 3. With the stances, it's more like 15 total skill trees to play around with.
4. I actually like the controls. I'm pretty use to the point and click thing though.
6. I'm excited for the story. I hear it's good. I also heard that all of the translation was redone right before the launch. Everything has been in pretty standard english so far. That could be just because I'm still in the starting area. We'll see.
7. Thank god the setting isn't same old fantasy setting rehashed again.
8. You can't really customize the way your characters look at creation time all that much.
9. I can't figure out how to do a few things. I just need to read and figure it out. I'm embarrassed to say, I can't figure out how to change stances. I see the list, I realize the white ones I should be able to change to. The red I think I need to equip properly to use, and the greyed out I need to buy. I've read that I should just select the stance I want, buy I can't. For example, my scout (healing class, but has cool attack stances anyway), has a dual wield stance that is red. I can't switch to it, and I can't equip 2 daggers.
10. The classes are awesome. It works like this. You pick a class, and each class has just 1 skill. However, then you also put yourself in a stance, and each stance has 4 or 5 skills. So far the stances seem really cool and thought out. I can't wait till my wizard gets the flying stance. The stances level up as you level up. As the stances level up, you get new skills and points that you can apply to those skills to make them stronger. The different family/class/stance/points distribution gives you a ton of possibilities and some real options in how you play. Or they will once I figure them out
11. The afk leveling that isn't really. You can't really do it for more than 30 minutes now (or so I hear, too fun to leave the computer), but you can go have a smoke, get a drink, goto the bath room, and your guys will put up a good fight while you're gone. All you do it put yourself on defend mode, and your guys stand there and will attack anything that gets close. This can suck sometimes because your scout (healer/assassin type) will go running right up to something and start stabbing away. Maybe that's just because of the stance I have him in. The scout and fighter both have this problem. They'll go attack guys all over the place even if you tell them to stay put.
12. Lots of drops so far, which is always good. Everything seems to flow on an 8 level schedule. Ie, you get new weapons armor, skills, etc every 8 levels. I haven't gone further than 8, but that's what I've noticed and read.
13. I'm not a PVP person. But this game makes me want to try it...bad. I didn't roll on a baron server, but I think I can still get some in.
14. The EXP cards were a great idea. When you do certain quests, you'll get these cards that when used give one of your characters x amount of EXP. If you hoard them, you can level up new character to use in your team.
15. I don't think I've seen one general chat message. People seem to just be being quiet. I almost don't want people to find out about it to keep the community pretty mature. Hopefully the monthly fee will keep those F2P kids away. Have you seen the way these people talk? My god, I fear for our youth.
16. Oh my god. How could I forget. Calling the bad guys "Republicans" was a stroke of genius.
I could go on, but I really want to get back to the game Most of the stuff I listed were positives, but there are a few negatives that I left out mostly because it's way better than I expected it to be. Like I said, I've played alot of the free mmos and this is the most fun/excited I've been about one. I am getting the first month free as I bought the retail version, but if it keeps this up, I'll gladly play 9 bucks a month.
There are alot of things I haven't tried out yet, like blacksmithing and upgrading, etc. The way the UPCs (recruitable npcs that you have to aquire) were implemented looks interesting.
Also, I'm kind of talking out my ass, as level 8 is nothing, but so far so good.
Btw, what's up with that first mission where you need to save the girl. All the mobs are level 1, but the hallways shot fireballs at you that really mess you up. I haven't tried it since like level 5 or so, but I don't think it's possible to make a run down those halls. Am I missing something?
beta.lyrae: You can make your Scout auto-heal by unequipping his/her daggers. This will give you access to two other Stances, one is there for straight healing and by far a lifesaver, while the other is a buff Stance for stat-increasing spells. You cannot use Dual-Wield yet as that requires your Scout to be at a certain level. Then you can equip two daggers (as well as use some badass skills like psychic daggers).

Thanks, I figured it out right after my post.
So, some updated impressions. This time, mostly negative (though I still love the game, just trying to balance out from my previous post). I'm level 20 now. They had a rather serious issue where people who paid retail were still being treated as free to play. It took them a few days, but at least they got it fixed. Other than that, there aren't many launch problems. There really shouldn't be, as this game has been out for a while in other regions.
1. Price. I'm glad it is pay to play. I really am. Take a look at any free mmo community and you'll know why. Better yet, from the SotNW general forum:
wow this game *** you have to pay to play *** is with that i mean its fun and looks nice but not that fun and not that nice this is the biggest l*** ever to hit the net
----
...money isnt the point its ###### you would pay for a game that looks this bad well its ok but ###### still and ###### lvl caps till you upgrade come on thats ***seriously its fun but then the company pulls this i know it was a beta but PAY TO PLAY evan TQ isnt the big of a *** *and there nose can smell a penny from main to Oregon
and further more rubber duck boy/girl its not that i dont like this game and its freedom of speech ######
If it wasn't pay to play, these people would actually be in game. Thank god. My problem is with the Cash Shop. This game is free in all other regions. It costs us 8.95 a month (totally fair price imho). I understand they need more money but the prices are outrageous. They're gpotato outrageous. I don't really understand this move. If you made it cheaper, people who spend a ton of money on it (provided they add some decent stuff). These cash shops just don't understand how to price things according to their value. I'm not sure why I started here, as it doesn't really bother me, just confuses me.
2. Translation. When you get to Port Coimbra [sic?], you start to notice some of the translation problems. It's not awful, but it's not as well done as it was from 1-20.
3. Grouping. They need to encourage it somehow. I'm not sure if there is an XP boost or not, but there should be. The past two nights I've leveled for an hour or so with someone I meet. It makes the grind more enjoyable and a lot easier. Also, you can't group in instances (at least not the one we tried). We couldn't get to Dios as a group. Oh well.
4. Disconnects. This might just be me, as I haven't heard anyone else complain about it, but if I take to long to look at a vendor's items, or read the dialog, I'll get disconnected. It's annoying as hell, and I always feel like I'm rushing so I don't DC.
5. Lag. There is just so much on screen at one time that lag can be an issue. Sometimes everything just stops and you know whats coming. You wait a few seconds then see the time you missed fly by. One of you guys might be dead when it comes back. Dying isn't a big deal at lower levels, so it hasn't bothered me.
I can't really think of much more on the negative side. Everything I said in my first post is still true, if anything, I'm more enthusiastic than I was before.
I wish this thread was more active Perhaps we need a Sword of the New World thread.
What class combinations is everyone using? I'm Fighter/Wizard/Scout. I'm kind of wishing I didn't go fighter, but we'll see. When they use a Sabre they're close to a Musky as far as dmg goes (at least at level 20). Anyone have thoughts on skill builds? I've been saving all my points for when I get to use all the skills to decide where to put them. I heard someone say that you can pretty much max all skills and that you don't really have to horde those points. I'm still going to wait a bit. I did max the Wiz's AoE spell though.
Has anyone tried PvP yet? Favorite Class/Stance combo? Thoughts?
Regarding stances, there's only a very few that aren't maxable (generally those ones with five skills and 1/1/2/2/3 per point distributions); an example being Catherine's marionette stance.
I ran a ele/wiz/scout team, so I can give a few pointers regarding wiz:
- Every single skill in the first stance can (and should) be maxed out; the last skill is a lifesaver versus bosses as it disables enemy skill use.
- Second tree (ESP) focuses on group magic/element shields, but may be difficult to level without resorting to afk in a fighter/wiz/scout party. The last skill in this stance dispels all magic effects and sets mp to 0 for -all- creatures/PCs in a radius around the caster; pushing that button has gotten me killed more than once.
- Third tree focuses on enemy debuffs / curses. Sleep spell, magic vulnerability, and a group invis spell; good all around utility tree and lethal in pvp.
- Fourth tree (levitation) turns wizard into a death machine. MP regen is set to 0, and you lose MP constantly in this, but in return you get:
--an AoE nuke stronger than quake that requires no reagent, among other good spells
--a small AoE effect added to all regular attacks, hits ~3 guys at once for full damage
--the ability to float; laugh at melees that try to hit your wizard and fail
So, basically if you can hold out and keep playing until you hit 60, you win.
In terms of fighter stances, I heard the twin swords one (hack & slash in sgGE) generally was the best one as it had a good mix of damage output + block attribute from the stance as you get its level up.
I forget which sword stance I used on my fighter, but it was the one with pommel beat. The first time I used it he smacked the dude once and I thought "Well, that wasn't bad" and then it was all WHAMWHAMWHAMWHAWMWHAM and I was mightily entertained. That's one thing I will say for the game, the use of skills is often very satisfying, although usually overkill.
I don't know what's been said in this thread so far.
I had a 3 musketeer family.
FYI, kneeling stance has about a 50% longer range than the autoattack range. so when I went in kneeling stance, I'd have to manually click each mob I wanted to snipe-kill.
Yeah, the thing about scouts is you have to drag the second dagger into their second slot (not double-click it) to equip it. Also, remove all daggers to let them auto-heal. Scouts are better as healers, if you want a dagger user, try Lisa Lynway (see my screenshot).
Apparently leveling slows down a lot at 40, but picks up again after 50. Interesting. I'm 27/27/28 right now with my Wizard/Scout/Lisa combo, but I also have a 24 Emilia, 21 Musketeer, 20 Soho, 14 Najib, 14 Fighter, and 14 Elementalist. I think I will level Emilia/Musketeer/Najib as my secondary group, and Soho/Elementalist/Fighter as a third group if I feel like leveling them.
The more characters you have (and the higher their levels) the higher your Family Level gets.
Basicaly, the cost is 5.60$USD for a month AND they give you 5000 GPoints. This will be the currency for the 'cash shop' where you can buy unique items like new costume, special scroll, etc...
If you did participated to the Open Beta and have at least 1 character at LVL 20 they give you 3 month for free.
The game will be commercial on August 30. At that point it will be 'Pay to Play' for everyone.

So I was thinking about picking up the American version... And I noticed that certain stores offer certain bonus characters (Fry's or Best Buy has a bare knuckle brawler type, I think Wal-Mart has a female that uses a modified Heaven/Hell stance and has rez, etc).
Of course, this is if I can pull myself away from CoH and/or Guild Wars and/or GameTap/Uru.

That's not bad at all. Shame I lost interest at lv57, though I might use up my 3 months of free time

I have just gotten to King's Garden, and investigate a little path on the map that doesn't seem to go anywhere. Sure enough, you can't follow the path past a certain point due to an invisible wall. You draw the best band-aids I've ever seen.
i think Wiz/Musk/Musk will be great for PvP
I started working on a more "posed" pic of my family while at work (using MS Paint and a mouse >_<), but so far I've only done the Musketeer.
I play Blazblue, Soul Calibur 4, Street Fighter 4 and soon Tekken 6... yeah... so add me if you want to play any of those.

I think I'll go wreck some shit at 60 PvP and see how it goes. Been wanting to try out Execution Shooter :P

Maybe you could add this to the OP?
I finally got a good feel for the controls and level-grinding:
CTRL + Click to move to a destination, killing all enemies in the way.
turn around
CTRL + SHIFT + Click to move back to your original point, automatically looting everything that dropped.
repeat.

Downloading.

FUCK Dios lantern.
Also, I bought the American version.

Of course, this is if I can pull myself away from CoH and/or Guild Wars and/or GameTap/Uru.
That's not bad at all. Shame I lost interest at lv57, though I might use up my 3 months of free time
