    Whay gray is that?

Mechanicus Standard Grey, highlights are dawnstone and administratum grey. Arguably color shifted a bit by matte varnish and picasa.

I'm working again on my ruined cathedral, needing to just get some more tile styrene to finish the floor, but to break up the grid, I want to put a design or image on the floor in front of the statue - a local game store makes their own terrain and bases with a laser cutter, and I could get something custom made if I provided an image.

Any recommendations for what people would think would look good on the floor or a ruined imperial cathedral?

Imperial eagle, fleur du lis, imperial eagle with the medical helix serpent symbol thing.

    Or skulls. Skulls everywhere.

Imperial Eagle is the only answer.

    Imperial Eagle made by skulls!

Trying to paint stuff since 1995.

I was going to correct that to "of" but "by" suits 40k so much better.

What could I say, I had a cathedral to build, and only limited budget for manual labor.

Now I'm just picturing a swarm of servo skulls building a huge mosaic on the floor tiny tile by tiny tile.
Like the end of Batteries Not Included, only with more grim-dark.

You gotta add piles of rubble too.
    Maybe some collapsed/half collapsed walkways

The servo-skulls make it out of the servo-skulls that don't make it.

Tri-Optimum reminds you that there are only one-hundred-sixty-three shopping days until Christmas. Just 1 extra work cycle twice a week will give you the spending money you need to make this holiday a very special one.

Those I'm doing separate, because cluttering up the ground floor with uneven surfaces is going to make it really hard to move models in, so not permanently attached debris piles seem the best idea.

There, finally got my thumb out of my ass and ordered surface primer and some other doodads. Including matt and gloss varnish.

Do you thin the varnish before applying it with airbrush? Looks kinda thick.

  • Dr_KeenbeanDr_Keenbean Dumb as a butt Planet Express ShipRegistered User regular
A lot of varnish specifically says to not thin it with water. I use airbrush medium.

I think keenbean should post highly flattering images of the mans he finished for me.

    Jesus, there's a mental picture I don't need.

Meh. That seems like it might take effort on my part.

If only you knew the half of it.

Couldn't be more effort than it took to paint them in the first place.

Plus your work is always awesome, so show it off, dickbag.

Sorry to interrupt the mental images of Keenbean finishing off dudes for Tox, but I got my fat-fingered hands on some ForgeWorld Kakophoni.

Do I paint them in my usual purple/pink scheme and paint the EC shoulderpads gold rimmed with white, or do I go for a studio scheme?

  • TraceofToxinTraceofToxin King Nothing Registered User regular
Fuck the studio. Do them you-style.

I was considering doing my space doges like this since they have a ton of scars too, but they don't have any fur so I think it'd look way too flat if they're that bright.

when i do scars on smooth surfaces (rat ogres or cultists) I do the flesh as normal, extra highlights on the scar area and then very small wash of red to make it look painful

Premiere for the airbrush! Nothing exciting yet, just priming stuff.

    Cat: confused.

  • EchoEcho ski-bap ba-dapModerator, Administrator admin
Man, I need a couple of daylight lamps so I can see what the crap I'm pointing the airbrush at.

Don't know if this is obtainable where you are but I got this lamp for Christmas and it's fookin' incredible:

Local hardware store has that very model. Guess I'm picking one up tomorrow.

edit: I should get an extractor hood too to deal with any abberant paint dust.

That seemed crazy. Turns out that's about $75. I should totally look around some time and see about getting a proper lighting solution.
Let me know how that one turns out.

  • EchoEcho ski-bap ba-dapModerator, Administrator admin
Well, keep in mind Swedistan's 25% VAT and stuff. Straight currency conversions never tell the whole story.

  • MaydayMayday Cutting edge goblin tech Registered User regular

That price seems just about what it costs here in Cheapistan (Poland).

Best thing about it is how soft the light is- much less shadow than with a normal lamp, which is invaluable when painting and taking photos. And the light is pure white of course, so you see the colours as they are.

EDIT: Christ, I sound like an ad.

Oh hey, turns out dark green on black primer is kinda hard to see. Guess I'll have to do some pre-highlighting.

  • EchoEcho ski-bap ba-dapModerator, Administrator admin
Actually, since I'm shamelessly stealing @J's Khador theme wholesale anyway - mind giving me a quick rundown of how you did your Khador stuff?

  • JJ Rabbit GangmemberRegistered User regular
    After black prime.

    Greens

    VMA camo olive green
    VMC olive grey
    P3 cryx bane highlight
    VMA grey (RLM 84)

Shade with black brown and olive washes. Rust and grime with browns yellows orange etc. MIG standard and light rust plus whatever other pigments came in that set.

    Greys are

    P3 greatcoat grey
    GW codex grey
    VGC ghost grey.

    Shaded with black washes.

  • EchoEcho ski-bap ba-dapModerator, Administrator admin
Thanks a bunch. Getting to work on that tomorrow.

I'm thinking about budgeting for an airbrush so I can finally start undertaking my 'jacks, and also so I can get into building gundam kits. I know the Badger 105 is often recommended, but I was just wondering if anyone had alternative suggestions and reasons for them (since it's annoyingly hard to search a thread for the last time people discussed airbrushes). More than the brush itself, I'm a bit lost on compressors, and would happily take recommendations on make/model.
Acquiring both of these things in Canada seems like a chore, sadly. The best price I can find would actually be purchasing through amazon.com and just paying the shipping and import taxes. I'd be happy to support locally instead, but I'm not sure I'll find a whole lot (hence the curiosity about what else might fly alright).

  • MagoMago SwedenRegistered User regular
I would look at more "mainstream" modeling shops. RC cars, trains, model kits etc. That is the only place here in Stockholm that I have physically seen an airbrush being sold, could be it's the same in Canada.

Yeah, I have one local shop to check out on Saturday, but that's it. If they don't have anything I'll have to dig something up online. I had actually been trying to find 'generic model/train hobby shops' online last night, but there were surprisingly few that popped up, and of those that did most that had an airbrush section had parts, not actual airbrushes.

  • Dr_KeenbeanDr_Keenbean Dumb as a butt Planet Express ShipRegistered User regular
Do they have Michael's in Canuckistan? Because that's where I got my 105. I think they sell compressors too.

The trick is to get your girlfriend to go buy some crafty bullshit like scrapbooking stickers or something, because Michael's always sticks a '50% off any item' coupon in with their receipts.

Thus I got a badger patriot for about $50.

Art shops too, might have them. They tend to cluster around universities these days.
Any hobby store that carries Vallejo paints could probably be persuaded to order in one of their airbrush paint sets too.

...because dragons are AWESOME! That's why.
