you guys need to watch more movies.

(couldn't find the stakeout intro without posting the whole fucking film in spanish so make do with the trailer)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzV-d4aGbt0

important to note that the roundhouse kick at 0:39 really seriously connected and knocked the guy out cold and everyone thought it was awesome so they kept it in the film.

Oh man, Dark Angel. Loved that way back in the dark ages of the 90s. 8->

another badass intro from Drive 1998. (the whole fucking film, the directors cut, is fantastic) the first two scenes here are basically the intro.

-Nothing for Stoker, not even cinematography

there were a lot of good fucking films out in 2013.

not really surprised about stoker, as good as it was they had zero campaign push. i've seen most of the oscar list bar august osage county and her (soon!) and a few of the docs and foreign films and unlike prior years i'm finding it hard to find a nomination that didn't deserve it.

the big snub is obviously inside llewyn davis. but again, so many good films.

i do find it amusing The Hunt is on there, that had a nomination last year in the baftas...

I was under the impression that Philomena was very good?

I don't know, I don't have it in me to muster up any outrage at the Oscars.

If you want a serious example of bullshit "groupthink", look no further than The Lone Ranger as a razzie nominee this year.

they even ignored wolf of wall street in VFX and that was the best one because no one could tell.

Monsters U joins Cars 2 as the only Pixar films to not receive a nomination in any category. I know Monsters U story wasn't particularly great, but come on The Croods? Dumb.

I'm also pretty surprised with the Long Ranger getting a SFX nod over Pacific Rim.

I don't understand all the Oscar love for American Hustle. I found it to be needlessly long and confusingly paced and mostly dull, but I'm willing to accept that I'm in a minority here.

I would have loved to see some love for Upstream Color and Spring Breakers (maybe Editing, or Best Supporting Actor for SB), those were two of my favorite films last year, but I realize that they're long-shots.

I would've cut either Star Trek or Iron Man to put Elysium in there. It's Gravity's award to lose, but I thought Elysium was much more impressive than Pacific Rim.

The Llewyn Davis snub is unbelievable. Just...what. I'm also exasperated that Tom Hanks wasn't nominated.

It's a last minute entry with a limited release and very little buzz around it compared to all it's competition. It did everything it could to not get nominated.

Yeah, there are so many technical awards that Pacific Rim should've been at least nominated for. I don't much mind Gravity taking them all home, but PR was amazing.

MU should definitely be on the list ahead of The Fucking Croods, but Frozen will win anyway.

Upstream Color and Spring Breakers? They were both interesting movies that I'm glad I saw, but I cannot think of a single category that it would make sense to nominate them. Definitely nothing pertaining to acting, directing, or writing. Nothing technically impressive about them. Certainly not Best Picture. They were concept pieces that had a message and communicated them well, and they were original and creative, but there's not really an award for "most original concept".

I guess I could see an editing award for Breakers; that film did manage to cut everything together in an incredibly effective manner. That said, I'm not enough of an expert on editing to know how difficult that was compared to other nominees.

I submitted an entry to Lego Ideas, and if 10,000 people support me, it'll be turned into an actual Lego set!If you'd like to see and support my submission, follow this link.

I think Editing for Upstream Color. The story is told almost entirely without exposition, and not a lot of dialogue. It's a movie that forces you to pay close attention and piece the narrative together yourself, all thanks to its editing.

Would that really be editing, though, or would it be screenplay? (I legitimately don't know how they break these things down.) Like, if a screenplay lays out scenes 1-20, said scenes jumping around the story, and then the editor cuts those scenes together in a competent but nothing-special way, leading to a really good bit of storytelling, does the editor get the credit, or the screenwriter?

upstream color: cinematography, sound editing maybe, possibly direction. original screenplay on the outside.

i mean, there's no chance it would be nominated because like fifty people were involved in making the movie and it costed something like $100k, but you could make an argument on the merits of those categories.

I could see cinematography, I guess. Nothing about the direction or screenplay stuck out as being especially fantastic, though. His films thus far are notable by virtue of being very original and structurally interesting. He's like the Mark Z. Danielewski of cinema. But, like MZD, his works have not been polished enough to where I would consider them alongside the Best of anything. They are simply interesting.

If there was a Best Low Budget Indie Film category, I would totally give him that, though.

Don't agree on editing. Brash, in-your-face editing by an artist in the field can be exactly what a film requires, and it's an art to do this well. Just because a film is edited in an unobtrusive, polite way doesn't automatically make that sort of editing better. That's a bit like saying that the best music only uses mezzoforte or lower.

only if its done right, if you are constantly wondering why it keeps cutting all over the place then it's not working. don't confuse good style with over the topness.

Prior to this innovation, you had to watch a whole trailer to have an entire movie's plot spoiled for you. Now you just have to read the title. Progress!
