It could be as simple as he reported her attempted "bribe" and standard response in their precinct is to have an investigation with the officer being put on desk duty/leave.

So half writing this out to make sure I have the timeline clear in my head and half because it seems like there are guesses for what happened in this episode all over. Just watching it, here's how I think the crime/setup basically goes down:
Past -> Colin Farrell's wife is raped; this may or may not have resulted in his son actually being the rapists son.
Unable to track down the criminal, Colin Farrell turns to mob boss Vince Vaughn who tells him who the rapist is.
Fast forward to present -> somewhere along the way here, Farrell ends up dirty and on Vaughn's payroll.
California / Federal government passes bill to build giant light rail transit; Vaughn begins cooking up a real estate scheme in order to become mega-rich and basically retire. He hooks up with the Vinci city manager, Caspere, to help him out and work out details.
Meanwhile, Bike Cop pulls over a blonde actress(?) driving crazy in a fast car. She propositions him for sex in order to let him go. Bike Copy seems to be ex-military and has lots of scars; implied later on he needs to take viagra for sex, so unlikely he complies. Either way, blonde actress files a complaint and has enough Hollywood/money pull for it to turn into something; Bike Cop is put on administrative leave.
News Reporter picks up story about Bike Cop, adds it to his list of corruption in Vinci city, turns it into a part of his eight part story on crime.
Announcement of eight part corruption story is published; coincidentally (or not? dun dun) Caspere is now kidnapped and later murdered by parties unknown.
Vaughn, worried about the story revealing his real estate shenanigans, tasks Farrell with beating up / scaring the reporter out of his story. Farrell complies and also hands over the reporters research notes.
Colin Farrell is tasked by Vinci Police HQ to track down Caspere, now missing for two days. They interview his new secretary and investigate his home, suspiciously filled with weird fetish items and stuff probably way out of budget for a city manager.
Vaughn meets with this corrupt moneybackers to seal the deal on his real estate venture, but they are expecting Caspere to explain the plan and no one knows where Caspere is. Vaughn will need to deal with this.
Bike Cop goes on out on a motorcycle ride and almost commits suicide by crazy bike riding. He stops himself at the last minute and pulls over, only to find the body of Caspere left on a roadside stop bench; body mutilated.
Bike Cop, Rachel McAdams, and Farrell arrive at the scene.
There's also some stuff about Rachel McAdams that goes into how her dad is a huge hippy stereotype and her sister is doing webcam porn and they all have giant family issues, but so far that seems super irrelevant. It does lead her to a missing persons case with few leads and no connection to the A-plot though.
Farrell is also crazy overprotective of his son, an alcoholic, and one loose screw away from going completely off the handle I imagine.
It should at least be interesting to see how these broken people try to bring various bad people to justice. Also totally hyped to see weeaboo lady cop shank someone with her various bladed implements.

I guess I am willing to give the show a shot, but like others said without some angle (occult, fantastical, conspiracies involving more than just casino/crime/money dudes and corrupt politicians), I don't see it being even near the force that season 1 was. Honestly, this episode reminded me of The Killing (I only saw first season of that), and while that show was ok, it isn't really a glowing review considering True Detective's history.
I am also disappointed we already know who ski-mask guy from trailer is already (maybe everyone already figured it out, I didn't read many speculation or analysis of the trailers before the season). The ski-mask guy could have at least added some mystery to the show.
I might just be a philistine but I totally disliked the opening song. I can't remember is it the same song every episode? (I can't remember if it was the same in season 1).

If there's one guy whose musical choices I am not going to question, it's T Bone Burnett. I fucking love Leonard Cohen so I'm totally down with the opening song they chose. The Lera Lynn song from the trailer was great, but I can see why they felt it worked better as a trailer song and not an opening theme song. She also had another song playing in the bar in ep 1, and if you're just a fan of her, supposedly there's more of her on this season's soundtrack to come.
So @BillyIdle and I were just discussing the show and this thread and he suggested that it's pretty heavily implied that Colin Farrell's kid is not really his, because of the nine-month timeline, and because, you know, he's not a pasty, chubby, red-haired dude. And I've actually said shit like that while people have stormed away from me, so it still wasn't unnatural to me.
And it only felt wrong to me, and maybe to you, because literally every other example of that kind of thing in the episode is left up to the audience's interpretation. It's an extremely minimalist episode in terms of being explicit with the exposition. That last line from the father is, by margin, far more explicit than any other piece of exposition and it DID feel like they were trying to hammer the point home for the audience. But I still think it was an in character line for the father. I can forgive it.
Also, Farrell was easily the high point of the premiere.
"I'll buttfuck your father next to your with your Mom's headless corpse on this lawn" is such a fucking insane line, yet he sold it. There were a lot of clunkers, though.

There's also some stuff about Rachel McAdams that goes into how her dad is a huge hippy stereotype and her sister is doing webcam porn and they all have giant family issues, but so far that seems super irrelevant. It does lead her to a missing persons case with few leads and no connection to the A-plot though.
Farrell is also crazy overprotective of his son, an alcoholic, and one loose screw away from going completely off the handle I imagine.
Also, I watched it a second time and I enjoyed my second viewing much more.

The original plan was to link it to the occult, but rumors also hit that they decided to drop the occult angle. It still looks up in the air to me. The one iconic thing I would think would nail it would be a creepy body placement like the first season. That crow mask was probably just from a sex party he left.
Father of the year. Farrell is badass.
To be fair, the occult angle was in the air through season 1 also. I don't want it to be literal. I don't want great cthulhu showing up and wrecking the california coastline.
But that sense of uncomfortable dread, which they did play into with Caspere's home, the car ride, and the scene at the end, are playing some familiar notes for me.

I guess I am willing to give the show a shot, but like others said without some angle (occult, fantastical, conspiracies involving more than just casino/crime/money dudes and corrupt politicians), I don't see it being even near the force that season 1 was. Honestly, this episode reminded me of The Killing (I only saw first season of that), and while that show was ok, it isn't really a glowing review considering True Detective's history.
I am also disappointed we already know who ski-mask guy from trailer is already (maybe everyone already figured it out, I didn't read many speculation or analysis of the trailers before the season). The ski-mask guy could have at least added some mystery to the show.
I might just be a philistine but I totally disliked the opening song. I can't remember is it the same song every episode? (I can't remember if it was the same in season 1).
Honestly, I wished the opening music of S2 was the one they had in the trailer.
Considering that artist had another song in episode 1, I wouldn't be surprised if we get more of her before the year is up.

My interpretation: He's a closeted gay, a product of Don't Ask Don't Tell as he was in the army. Was imagining something/someone else while she was blowing him. Probably led to his lonerism (being a solo bike cop) and his a-little-more-than-half-hearted suicide attempt.
They've hinted at PTSD way more heavily than they've hinted at gay. Which is easy because they haven't hinted at gay at all.

The ONLY thing that could be used as evidence of being closeted was how disassociated he chose to be during his beej. But that could come from a whole bunch of other areas.

But I disagree. You have to consider context. Their exposition in this episode was EXTREMELY minimalist. And yet, they probably gave you as much information about the characters and their relationships in this one episode than in the entirety of Season 1.
Anyway, I don't agree that they "didn't hint" at him being homosexual. I think it is heavily implied and works within the framework provided. PTSD is also possible. They may be commingled reasons. These aren't cardboard, one-dimensional characters.

But I think the framework is there for both interpretations and at this point I think they are either equally valid, or it's both. No reason why he can't be gay and have PTSD. Or that some of his PTSD is even potentially informed by his homosexuality.
