I think people have a strange concept of what is considered too stupid to see by the general public.

There's this general idea of everyone's distant father from the 50's who isn't into any of this hokum and it's like the most successful franchises in the US are fucking superheroes and kid wizards and fantasy shit, selling people on odd concepts is not necessarily an uphill battle.

It would be really surprising to me if someone was on board with everything else in the trailer but drew the line there

I've been aware of the character but am not really familiar with GotG, but he doesn't look the slightest bit out of place alongside even just drax and gamora, to say nothing of groot

It is less that audiences are dumb and more that Rocket is a really fucking weird sell, even for comics.

One of the most frustrating things for me is people reviewing things "from the prospective of an average person".

Because, generally, no. You aren't, unless the average person is you. You're reviewing based on a bizarre haze of cliches and intentionally getting confused by things you could understand perfectly well just so you can be offended for other people.
