As Pax is almost upon us, I have been thinking about the last two Paxes and, as awesome as they were, I fell into a few traps that lessened the experience. I thought I would share my “pax traps” list in case it might help anyone else. Do you have any “pax traps” you want to avoid this year?
- The relentless pursuit of swag: Swag is fine. However, one year later, among the mountains of swag I acquired there are only three items that do not fall into the category of “junk.” More than once, I missed out on cool games, panels, or conversation with fun people because I was waiting in line for swag or had to rush to a raffle. On one occasion, I came dangerously close to breaking Wheaton’s Law in an attempt to line up fast enough to get a t-shirt (which I never wear). For me, swag is just not worth it.
- Sticking rigidly to a plan: One of my biggest regrets at Pax was leaving a very cool guy in the board game area to go to panel I had planned on seeing. The panel was OK, but I feel terrible for leaving that guy, and I know I would have had more fun hanging out with him in Table Top. At Pax, I have always had the best time when I went with the flow.
- Big Game Demos: Twice did I stand in line for over two hours to play 15 minutes of a game that I would buy in 18 months. Looking back, there were dozens of other better ways to spend my time, especially because it is a bit harder to socialize in lines on the expo floor due to the noise level.
- Avoiding interesting things because of lines: I missed out on DiveKick and Transistor last year because of this. Some lines are just worth it, and lines can be so much fun (especially the quieter lines for the panels).

I think that all of this sort of advice fits well into there.
