According to IGN both WH Smith and play.com have dropped the price of the PS3 in the UK by £25 to £399.99. While this may be stressful news for the Sony corporation and yet more of a criticism of their absurd price point in the UK this is good news for me, and other UK people. Just 2 more of these drops and it will be down to somewhere in the low £350 range and I will be able to bring myself to buy one! And at the current rate that should happen within like 2 months.
That would be something like $30-35 usd right? Not too bad. If we were to see any of that action this side of the pond, that would knock it down out of that $600 psychological window.

Gamestation have dropped their price £399 when you trade in any game (think a 5p budget pc title) Also £434.99 with a selected game (the selection has been improved to include Virtua Fighter 5 and Def Jam Icon) All machines bought will get a free copy of xmen 3 on blu-ray.
I thought the PS3 was doing well when we sold all our units pretty fast (in a few days) then we had to take in other stores stock because we were the only store selling. Hopefully this will improve things.
Well, it's hardly local actually, but the one I go to is Altrincham
Cool its out of my area to visit though
I was jus' asking out of intrest tbh ;-)
Indeed ;-) Anyhow back to the subject WH smiths have this offer until thursday and Gamestation I think it lasts till the end of the Easter Holidays. But if its generate a high turnover of sales i could see it becoming a retail standard price.
Hopefully aswell Game, HMV and Comet, Currys etc will trash the bundle only idea.
Yeah, no kidding. You would think they'd do it over here (in America land) because it's kind of struggling, but the PS3, AFAIK, did pretty well over in the UK.

Well, initially. The 82% sales drop in the week following the launch has doubtless got some Sony execs a little scared.
Nore that it isn't Sony dropping the price, it's the stores themselves.
Which does kind make one wonder if they'll bother restocking it. I'm getting the impression that they're desperately trying to shift their allocation so they don't sit on the stock for months. If they have to start cutting into their own profits to stock the PS3, we might see non-specialist retailers dropping it entirely.
Surely that's worse then? If it's the shops scared about how stock isn't shifting, before Sony is, it means retailers are already losing trust in the PS3.
Yes that would be worse. I can also see it becoming more of a problem if Sony are dicks about new allocations. Logically, retailers would want to order less of a product that isn't shifting as fast as they hoped, but I wouldn't put it past Sony to start telling them that they must order x number of units, or not stock it at all.
I have a vague recollection of reading about Sega asking retailers to take a slight loss on Dreamcast sales to help Sega out (NB: The retailers elected not to). This would be kind of like that, but born of douchebaggery instead of desperation.

I doubt they will stop selling it. I think the issue is they are sitting on huge volumes of stock due to thinking there would be massive demand. And as warehouse space eats money they want to clear it out and keep a sensible level of stock ticking over.
This will of course worry sony because they can't "ship" so many to stores if they are only ordering tiny amounts.
EDIT: didn't see second post. I suspect Sony may try that. I don't think they are in the place to do so though. It will be interesting t see how the shop floor space changes in the next year or so. I've rather enjoyed GAME realising that they shouldn't be fucking Nintendo over so much.
"hay guys you either stock loads of a product that isn't selling or you don't stock it all saving space for stuff that does sell"
Most shops have only one real response to that. So its up to Sony to persuade them that sales are going to pick up and that the retailers can still hit the weak spot for massive profits (sorry)
I think nintendo really need to seize this opertunity to increase Wii shipments. If retailers can offset loss's of not stocking any PS3 with increased profits from Wii sales (which still sell as fast as they hit the shelves) then you could see Argos/Woolies and such dropping the PS3 some time soon (that is, if Sony gives them an ultimatum of "X amount or none")

I was thinking more in terms of non-specialist places. I don't see Game or Gamestation dropping the PS3, but places that depend on volume like Argos and Woolies are probably doing some swift recalculations involving warehouse/shelf space, volume and profit margins.

I see what your saying but I doubt argos would drop it. Going by it selling everything under the sun approach. But I can imagine the smaller woolies branches doing it. Still how quickly did they drop the gamecube and dreamcast?
I think dropping the prodcut is so unlikley that its not worth thinking about. Store space is interesting though. I suspect it may be like the PSP/DS which pretty much swapped places after the hype for the PSP didn't relate to sales.
It will be interesting to watch the shelf space thing, because it's generally a good indicator of relative sales. I've been observing the 360 section in my local Gamestation gradually grow in size.
I note that the big Tesco Extra near me isn't stocking anything Sony-gaming related except PS2 games (No PS3 or PSP hardware or software), but they do sell everything else (360, DS, Wii, Xbox, GBA, etc.).
Didn't stores across the UK drop the Gamecube when its sales weren't that hot?
I know this is Sony, but if the PS3 doesn't pick up the pace, I can see it getting booted off shelves in the UK too. Shelf space must be a big issue there.
I have also enjoyed seeing Game change their attitude to Nintendo. The DS stuff used to be in back left of the shop with all of the PSP games and UMD movies at the front, and now the DS stuff is right at the front with about three times more shelf space.

VAT @17.5% has a lot to answer for...

Same here.
Personally i can probably see £399 with 3 games I doubt retailers will want to drop the price that dramatic any time soon
Still, there's probably going to be another price drop around christmas.

Well, it's all relative, innit?
I'll shut up now.

Even taking VAT into account the PS3 should be no more than £361. It should be even less given that it's not got hardware backwards compatability.
I made a game, it has penguins in it. It's pay what you like on Gumroad.
Currently Ebaying Nothing at all but I might do in the future.

to be fair, they were asking for it when they decided to spend that much on a console.
To be fair, only a complete and total asshole would say something like that.
