In-engine is just a way of saying that it was rendered using actual game assets and on the technology the game will run on.

Rather than it being, say, a CGI trailer. Like how Blizzard has done trailers using the WoW engine itself, or their big-deal CGI ones that are the opening cinematic for each expansion.

how could it possibly be gameplay?

what is 'dramatically release cloak' mapped to?

    Yeah uh

"In engine" absolutely does not mean that anything shown will actually be possible in-game

    aonuma-gameplay-zelda-wii-u.png

Aonuma seems to be saying it's real-real gameplay

I'm guessing what he means is

the part before running away from the monster is 'gameplay'

meaning that's what the game really looks like when you idle in the field.

the chase sequence was 100% cutscene

    Very possible

But my point isn't really about "oh man the game will look like a chase sequence out of my animes when I play it"

The point is that the game looks really pretty in a way that made me think it wasn't running on Wii U hardware

My favourite thing about the Grim Fandango news, is it means Disney aren't being stingy with the LucasArts IPs.

    New Maniac Mansion, believe.

There's a video on the Double Fine Youtube where they talk a bit about the process. Basically once the Disney deal went through with LucasArts, Double Fine called Disney and told them "Look, we can make this a valuable brand again, and that will make us money, and that will make you MORE money."

Gotta assume that LucasArts didn't bother to take their calls for all these years.

I think it is more "Tim Schafer really really really did not want to talk to LucasArts"

Schafer has been candid for all these years about trying to get Grim Fandango back and begging the owners to do something with it or let him have it. I doubt he'd have an issue talking with LucasArts.

Remember how in the PS2 version of Resident Evil 4 your alternate costumes wouldn't show up in cutscenes, but they would in the GC/Wii versions?

GC/Wii versions were running those scenes in real-time, they were pre-rendered on PS2

Those are still technically in-engine. The difference would be something like a Blizzard cutscene.

    Edit: Anzekay knows.

    Yeah uh

Isn't in-engine EXACTLY what that means

If they just say something is "in-engine," there is no actual character control or gameplay or real-time rendering going on, the movement is all pre-scripted and the models are pre-rendered.

when was the last time I saw something that was not in-engine

Any of the straight up trailers wouldn't be "in-engine."

Gameplay? Yeah, it's all in-engine, but if there is actually gameplay going on, they will label it "pre-alpha gameplay" or "captured from beta footage." Technically you could also label any gameplay "in-engine," but developers benefit from being clear when what you are seeing is actual gameplay.

Man I like Naughty Dog and there's no doubt UC4 looks pretty

But they've had a very linear visual progression in Uncharted and Last of Us and, yeah, that shit looks really good, but it's not exactly visually gripping in the same way as something like Yoshi's Woolly World or Kirby and the Rainbow Curse or the new Zelda, all of which make me go "what the hell is going on here"

I may just be salty about it, though, because I really expected it to be a Last Guardian trailer

I really can not care about any "new" aesthetic Nintendo had adopted for whatever game.

And really I haven't been floored by any of Nintendo's first party anything since Wind Waker over ten years ago.

I won't lie, it was a little heart wrenching when Andrew House said, "one more thing", and ours hadn't played yet, because I was also hoping for The Last Guardian.

Uuugh. I just got home from work and am super bummed I missed the first segment. It was basically a person All Star List of people I want to see talking about video games together.

Is there a way to start the stream over? That seems unlikely.

Don't care. It's proof that we're capable of creating engines that can rival or surpass CG at a consumer level

It's probably almost over, and you can normally scrub through by refreshing the page right after it finishes.

Also, let's be real, they just want to know who the girls are so they can creep and get banned.

My issue with esports (and someone mentioned this earlier) is the name. Calling them esports is probably the dumbest thing anyone ever did regarding all this nonsense.

but it's so fun to say
