Wow I didn't realise half this thread seems to really really hate eSports.

    I'm sort of confused.

    I love e-sports!

    I just think they're a joke!

Yeah well that doesn't make any sense to me at all.

eSports isn't really the same as a movie that is so bad it's good.

It's a multi-million dollar industry now, with tons of games being tailored for it and hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of fans world wide.

I don't get what about it makes it a 'joke'.

It's just a ridiculous overblown self-important trainwreck with zero self-awareness and I love it all.

So I have been really thinking about the implications of being a megadummy and buying another Wii U

And I am in a precarious position

I really want to play Smash Bros this year

And I would really like to check out Kirby, Yoshi, Captain Toad, all that

But I don't want to pay full price for them, like I would probably max out at 20 bucks for each one

The only big E3 Wii U games I would pay full price for are Smash Bros, Zelda, and Splatoon

And I wanna play Smash Bros when it comes out

But I don't wanna be stuck sitting on an unused console again for a year waiting for games to come out/get cheaper

    Don't be like me, kids

Do what I did with the original Wii

Wait four years after launch, so, November 2016

Grab it on the cheap, and grab the games on the cheap

Unless you're specifically gonna be involved in the online scene, I don't see why you'd need to play Smash Bros. this year, it's not like it's a story-based game that's gonna have this big zeitgeist around it

It will totally have a zeitgeist around it of everyone is talking about it so all my friends wanna play

When Brawl came out that's all we did for pretty much that entire week

    Hmm

    Never mind then!

I'm actually the biggest Nintendo fan in my group of friends so local play Smash never really happened for me

I'd rather mechanically simple games that require high levels of player coordination and planning to be popular e-sport games.

And I mean, I guess they are out there, Counter Strike jumps to mind.

Dota is arguably this. Mechanically it's very straightforward, but then there's a level of nuance added by the variety of things that the players can do.

But what ultimately wins tournament games is player coordination, decision making and planning.

Starcraft is similar as well but there is a lot more complexity involved at the base level so it isn't so mechanically simple.

I brought my PS4 on a four-day trip recently. A house in Maine with like twenty dudes, a bachelor party for a close friend. Sportsfriends was basically the only thing that got played. I wouldn't have called it, but Hokra was by a wide, wide margin the game of choice on that trip.

After arriving home, I noticed that someone had actually worn apart the rubber sheath of the left stick from playing Hokra so hard. Mutha. Fuckin'. E-Sports.

Overblown because of the amount of money involved? I don't really think that's overblown, just successful and popular.

Self-important? I think that's just codeword for "I dislike this". Besides, being self-important is something that seems to pervade any sort of entertainment industry that involves people becoming, in some way, celebrities. Sports included.

And yeah I am pretty sure a lot of folks in esports are very self aware. I think you're making some really sweeping statements here.

But those are all very straightforward mechanics, but they have a lot of variety to them and how you use them. The mechanics themselves are very straightfoward- kill stuff, get stronger over the time. Get gold, use it to get stuff that makes you stronger/more useful. etc etc

denying and last hitting are pretty weird though, I will admit.

The question is do I get one by the time Smash Bros is out

I've been considering selling this fancy MacBook Pro I have to pare down to a standard Air and then I would probably have somewhere around a spare 300 bucks off of that

Now that I have a PS4 I'm pretty much out on any real system-demanding PC games so I dunno if I need that power anymore

Gamescom: NES Remix 3 announced and it is actually good this time. Classic NES characters like Ice Climbers, Mike Jones, and ROB return for the melee.
September: Wario Land 5 announced for 3DS. Re-reveal of SMTxFE. Wario, Captain Syrup, Lucina, and Jack Frost join the brawl.

MOBA's are weird because of the huge windup until the actual action can go down

There are rushes and little skirmishes here and there, but like Starcraft there's a lot of wasted time of seeing people grind out upgrades instead of engaging with their opponent

I guess that's part of the competition, watching people more efficiently upgrade themselves before the fight? In which case I'm a hundred times more interested in clever choices and understanding of mechanics than the muscle memory to perfect grinding AI goons

Both of these games would taste much better to me if you had a short setup period where you can just place everything you can make in the first ten minutes of the game and start from there
(I say both because I thought I included Starcraft in there somewhere whoops time to sleep)
