Pony, you make me want to give The Sims 3 another chance.
I basically bought it, played it once, got disgusted at the amount of microtransactions and just wanted to get The Sims or maybe The Sims 2 instead.
there's a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot of microtransaction stuff in Sims 3 but it's honestly fully ignorable
there is literally nothing vital in the microtransaction sphere, and i don't find it too obtrusive aside from the fact that such items like, exist in the inventory as purchasable things i don't have
the expansions are the real killer, because i consider some of them (Late Night, University, Ambitions in particular) absolutely vital to the game and they're almost as expensive as the full fucking game itself
but in the end, I can't really like, comment on the "value" of the Sims 3 with objectivity, given I literally have every expansion and stuff pack for it and some of the microtransaction DLC
soooooooooooo
edit: correction, there's a few of the Stuff Packs I don't have because I think they're stupid, like the Katy Perry or Diesel or 70's ones
i NEARLY bought sims 3 during the sale based on your latest posts about it in here...NEARLY....
@Feral I own a T&N mattress and I'm overall happy with it. It's starting to wear in a bit, but it's important to note that it is not memory foam, it is just foam. I found the bed inexpensive and comfortable and the ease of getting it in my apartment via vacuum sealing was really nice.
If you have the cash and are looking for a more luxury mattress, this is not the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on. But it is comfortable and their customer service was fucking stellar if that means anything to you.
So Pony, Sims 4 got rid of pools and toddlers in the base game
I dont care as much but I do worry about what else might magically not be in the base game that should be.
that's... troubling
like, there were lots of things I expected not to be in the base game because it traditionally isn't
University, really in depth complex careers, home businesses, seasons, pets, supernatural shit (beyond ghosts)
since that stuff is basically always in expansions and always has been
the toddler thing in particular bothers me. so like, babies just magically turn into children now? that's fucking weird, man
for some reason they are also alcoholics and have legendary skill at farming....
and the UI for Sims 4 is a big step backwards
is there a video that shows the UI? I've only seen the videos that show the house and character creator stuff
man
i would hate if the Sims 4 was actually shitty
i don't want to be one of those grognards who doesn't get the new game
there were people like that for Sims 2 when Sims 3 came out because Sims 3's core game was missing a lot and they were super annoying people
sorry, was bad dorf fortress joke. I don't know anything about Sims 4.
I just find it funny how the popular stereotype is that DF is the super-hardcore nerd gamer's game while The Sims might as well come with a bottle of gin because the only people playing it are bitter housebound women when (barring the UI) they are so similar to each other.
(in DF everyone, even children, needs alcohol to function. and if you have the option checked that everyone helps out with harvesting food then by the time a kid grows up they'll be a legendary farmer from the couple xp they get when they decide to harvest something)

I picked up Sims 3 a while ago, even though I've never been much for The Sims. I enjoyed it, but I don't really put the time in it requires to get experiences like Pony is having.
I'll probably just stick with it and not worry about The Sims 4 since I haven't even gotten the DLC for Sims 3.

Wait The bed comes vacuum sealed.
Yeah, that way it's super compressed and (relatively) tiny so they can ship it in a package that's only kinda huge and not freight huge.

see this is like when i tell DayZ stories and people buy DayZ and then are like
Poooooooooony this game is just Walking Simulator 2014 it's fucking boring I spend 2 hours walking and then some guy shoots me in the face and i die and then rinse repeat
nothing cool ever happens to me not like your stories
and it's like look
you get a highlight reel
you get a slice of the interesting stuff that happens from hours of me dicking about
Sims 3 is a little better than DayZ in that regard in that the game is basically built to generate soap opera craziness provided you do more than just go to work and sit there and grind your Logic skill every day
if you turn on Free Will to some degree and just sorta direct your Sims about and don't micro-manage them constantly and just let the game evolve and play it fairly naturally instead of trying to go for what is constantly optimal
that's how you end up with cool stories
buddy of mine tried to get into the game and he's like "nothing cool happens in my games, I just get my Lifetime Wish in like a week, maybe pop out a kid, get my skill to level 10" and i'm like dude
you aren't roleplaying with your little dollies
there's your fuckin' problem
you're playing that shit like you're grinding levels in a MMO
stop that
yes, it has skills and levels and stuff like that but if you fixate on powergaming that, it's going to be boring as fuck to play and nothing interesting will happen
It's weird seeing all the ingredients listed on the front of old boxes.

Yeah, a game that is relatively goal-free and doesn't have a fixed endpoint like the Sims absolutely requires a player to kind of invent their own fun to some extent. I only ever played the first game but my friends and I had a grand old time doing things like making versions of ourselves in a mansion using cheat codes and seeing what happened, or having Mortimer Goth turn his house into a serial killer shack, or creating this horrible dysfunctional trailer park family where the dad would keep getting new jobs and then losing them, the couple fought all the time, but they also cranked out babies that would be swiftly taken away by Child Services.

i didnt know what would be missing w/ 3 came out so i went in blindly and was very disappointed and found myself wanting to go back to 2 because i had so much more to do and play with after the god knows how many expansions they got me to buy.
they have made entirely too much money off me from sims expansions. i dont intend to move to 4 until at least 3 or 4 expansions have come out and i can get some kind of cheaper bundle.
one of the things that really bothers me is how "gamers" react to it. A lot of them snub their noses at it, that it's too "casual", that it's "for girls", that it's just "a virtual dollhouse".
fuckin', you play Persona 4
don't give me that shit, you fucker
i don't want to hear a god damn bit of nonsense from some "gamer" who talks about his favorite Mass Effect romance in one breath and in the other shits on The Sims 3 for being "a game for housewives"
the saddest part is this mentality has really turned a lot of people off from playing the Sims who might otherwise really like it
the worst is the people whose only view of the Sims as a game is as some fucked up SAW: The Video Game type thing
like the most they'll admit to playing the Sims to do is to murder the little bastards in as fucked up a way possible
for some, that's legit all the interest they have in it, they don't see any other point to playing it besides as a torment simulator, and that's fucking sad
but what's even sadder is the dude who says that's what he does, but he does it with like
nervous eye-checks
like the reality is he spends hours with his virtual dollies, doing their hair and make-up and clothing and sending the teenage daughter to prom and being shocked as their vampire neighbor turns out to be cheating on their wife or something
because he don't want his mates to think he's some kind of fag
i see this behavior from like, 26 year old men and i'm like are you for fucking real
dude, seriously
you have like 4 expansions for the Sims 3, don't try to tell me you keep buying that shit because you want new inventive ways to assert your violent masculinity in this dollhouse
you got it because you heard in this one, you have new career opportunities for your little dudes
