Anytime you want to say "not all ___", instead don't

Not all instances of phrases that begin with not all are not worth saying.

I guess I kind of have a problem with the idea of a GB "community" and think its sort of disingenuous

Like we here are a community

The GB forums are a community

But I don't think that you can reasonably call a group of individuals that happen to have a shared interest in an entertainment product a "community" when they literally never interact with each other

The tone and timbre of our discussion cannot affect that of, say, a reddit GB thread, because the two don't overlap

This isn't me trying to get out of being culpable, its just something I notice on the internet a lot, this idea of ascribing one hive mind or communal identity to a group that doesn't really interact

Anyway its just something I've been thinking about when discussions of internet shittiness comes up and it kind of rubs me the wrong way

Because assholes do gravitate towards assholes, and there are absolutely communities of horrible people on the internet

But misidentification of those groups doesn't seem like its going to help anyone

    i can agree with this

it's like putting us in the 'video gaming community'

and i don't think anyone wants that

well, it turns out that in ffxiv, when you switch from your main class to a secondary class (in this instance, chef) you immediately unequip all your standard armor and gear.

Furthermore, crafting classes have their own gear that you need to level up to use, and no one appears to sell level 1 clothes.

oh, and I sold my default outfit.

so I'm perched on a railing in the Chef's guild, naked, feverishly mashing out orders of maple syrup until i can hit a high enough level to equip a shirt and/or pants while cooking

    ...10/10

There's definitely a level 1 clothing vendor in every town, but really you don't need it. Even if you're on a job that needs the defense, you can fight naked to level 5 and wait for the good stuff from quests

and also, all the bodies in FFXIV are just so perfect and greek, you gotta look at them once in a while!

I swear I checked the vendor and he had nothing below level 5

I don't know if community is necessarily the best word since as you said the disparate populations of people who watch giant bomb or regularly play video games do not necessarily interact with each other

But I do think there is a way to generally group ourselves based on what attracts us to giant bomb or video games and how that media affects us

Well the good news is I'd expect something on the site probably within the day denouncing these actions.

So then maybe we can move onto denouncing the people acting like shitheads instead of calling for GB to be personally responsible for them.

One Matt Rorie has in fact stated multiple times on Twitter that he is working on a statement addressing these issues and wants to put time into it instead of rushing it out! And is also being very active on twitter and in a larger conversation on the giant bomb forums.

    Some relevant tweets:
On why there is nothing on the front page right now:

Moderation is taking action on the forums:

Responding to a suggestion that Giant Bomb / Forums be shut down until a statement is drafted:

I thought it was used to refer to sexists who butted women out of conversations to argue on their behalf unsolicited

While that's definitely a definition that exists, I've seen it more often used as a way to dismiss defenses of females by attempting to claim that the defenders have selfish motives.

Then again I also used to think sjw referred to assholes that wanted to co-opt activist language for their dumb bullshit

Like clambering for trigger warnings for things that might upset otherkin or something

And that ones definitely been taken by fuckheads to just literally refer to "advocates of social justice"

Wait is white knight a good thing now

I thought it was used to refer to sexists who butted women out of conversations to argue on their behalf unsolicited

while white knighting originally referred to something similar to this

white knight is now a term colloquially used to refer to when someone is championing a subject seemingly just for the sake of doing so, or when it's perhaps unnecessary for them to do so

so in this particular case in the tweets it's like, they're cracking down on the people who are using "white knight" to describe the people who are defending social justice issues

  • -Tal-Tal Registered User regular
either way it refers to disingenuously feminist men

but men who drown out and overshadow women in their own conversations are a more real problem than men who act feminist cause they wanna get laid bro

    Agreed

The word community implies a level of control and commiseration that I don't think exists, but as people in the group of "giant bomb audience" we can at least try and be an example acceptable behavior

Most DBZ films are 100% enjoyable as long as you don't try and take them into the main dragon ball story timeline

treat them like alternate universe possible adventures

I think if we open our history books we might see that The White Knights were very much for racism.

  • InquisitorInquisitor Registered User regular
Basically the short version of the modern use of white knight, is that if you ever hear someone accuse someone else of being a white knight, you can know the person doing the accusing is an idiot not worth listening to.

It is a lovely short hand in that way.

as a teen who obsessed over things, i tried so hard to fit them into the timelines

but like, gohan would be wearing piccolo's outfit, but the dragon balls are active, and Krillin's not dead

really just Krillin being alive was a dead giveaway most of the time
