The only other way is through xbox.com. But I'm not sure if it allows 'buying' free things on the website. All I know about it is that sometimes it won't let me because I don't have a CC attached to the profile and it won't let me buy things through the website. Perhaps that's only for items that actually cost money.
I claimed Lost Odyssey via browser a few weeks ago. Showed up as owned when I looked it up on my console just fine.

There is a demo on the 360. I enjoyed it so I bought the game (haven't played yet). The demo was not as good as XCOM:EU was (I have played that), but it was still good enough. Don't take anybody's word, check it out.
I'm guessing the best time to buy DOOM (PC) will likely be during the Steam Summer Sale? I knew it was good, but didn't think it was amazing until it got rated GOTY by the pcgaming subreddit (echo chambers and all that...).
