Playstation Portable: What do I need?

My brother recently gave me his PSP because he picked up an 80 gig iPod Video and doesn't play games much. The PSP came with the soft case, Liberty City Stories and Madden 2007, along with Saw and Bad Boys on UMD Video. Today I bought Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee and the Warriors for 20 dollars each, and am really just trying to figure out what else I should look into for PSP. If recommendations could be split into Greatest Hits/Normal Price/Homebrew I would appreciate it, as I'm on a limited budget. Also, what should I look into accessories wise, and what do I need to run homebrew.

I'm running one of the earlier firmwares, so I am able to do homebrew, just haven't got the USB cable required to do it yet.

A memory stick reader will also work fine.

You'll want to downgrade most likely, and use the custom firmwares.

This is what my boss recommended, just I have neither a memory stick reader or a USB cable, and the largest memory stick I have is the 32 MB that my brother gave me. How much will it cost me to get up and running?

I was looking at Daxter and Wipeout Pure when at Target. How much is Pirates, and how much playtime do you think the 3 have in them before getting old/doing everything that can be done.

New memory stick, reader/cable, the works?

Maybe 50 bucks. If you have the right kind of cable lying around, 30-ish for a new memory stick.

If you have a digital camera, the USB cable from it will most likely also fit. I'm on the latest firmware so homebrew is out for me, but then again the video improvements in the latest version kinda makes up for it as that's what I use it for mostly (native-resolution videos in AVC main profile looks great).

I was looking at Daxter and Wipeout Pure when at Target. How much is Pirates, and how much playtime do you think the 3 have in them before getting old/doing everything that can be done.

I got pirates for 19.99 on sale, but i only ever see it for 29.99. If you have never played one of the newer pirates versions (PC or Xbox), then your playtime could be virtually unlimited if you want to just keep building up your fleet, getting richer, etc. It would get older faster if you've played a previous version, since it is just a well done port.

Daxter i would say around 20 hours to beat, but that is just a guess. It is very old school, with minimal combat and lots of great platforming, puzzles and exploring, plus its beautiful and has no load times in game. I still haven't beaten it, my save is sitting at the final boss, but he's pretty tough.

Wipeout i am horrible at. I love it, but once i get past about the third class i just suck. But it has a huge amount of value since you can probably find it for 19.99, and it comes with 12 regular tracks, plus there is 12 more tracks you can download for free.

Basically, if you like platformers, get Daxter. If you like futuristic racers, get wipeout. If you like fun get pirates!

And Mega Man Powered Up was already mentioned, and is also excellent. So is Lumines.

I notice a lack of LocoRoco on your list. If you haven't played it yet, there's even a playable demo available for download.

My digital camera cord didn't fit, but I found my mom's and it is the right size. Right now I'm looking at the following:

    Pirates
    Daxter
    LocoRoco
    MGS: Portable Ops
    Wipeout: Pure
    2 Gig Memory Stick Duo

All the above would probably cost around 150, which is reasonable in 2 paychecks. What firmware should I look at getting?

Just get whatever firmware you need for the games you want to play. They really haven't added much in terms of functionality since the web browser, unless you own a PS3. If you own a PS3, i hear the newest firmware finally implements streaming media over wireless networks from your PS3 to PSP, so that sounds cool.

Puzzle Quest is probably a good bet. I enjoyed the heck out of Lego Star Wars. Lumines if you like some puzzling. X-Men Legends and Marvel Alliance for your hack and slach needs. I hear that Killzone is pretty good (have two friends that play together at lunch all the time).

Do you really have to "crack open the bitch" and install custom firmware in order to get the most out of it?

Yes, I am planning to get a PSP too because some shops nearby are trying to get rid of their PSP stuff (to a certain extent). Daxter, Gradius Collection, Sega Collection, Metal Slug Antology for 20 Euro each? Well, sign me up.

RPG's not my favorite genre but I enjoy them. Puzzle Quest looks interesting, Lumines I have on 360 XBLA, and I have The Warriors for my hack and slash needs. Killzone I've only heard good things about now that I think about it, so I'll have to look it up. I just upgraded to Firmware 3.03 to play Warriors, and when I finish I'll probably downgrade to 1.5, get a custom firmware, and try out homebrew. Thanks for all the advice everybody.

    A DS Lite, luhmayoh.

In all seriousness, though? A bloody good case would do you good. Mine is, I think, a Logic3 plastic jobby which has served me well. Games-wise, I'd recommend Lemmings and Wipeout Pure. I've heard good things about Exit too.

You could also pick up Worms: Open Warfare, but that depends on how you feel about paying £15+ for a game you can get on XBLA for £6.80.

What can you do with custom firmware?

What interests me about the PSP is that being a PS3 owner i can do that whole remote play, access your PS3's harddrive from anywhere thing. If I ever want an mp3 player, it's going to be a PSP.

Don't do it (buy it for its mp3-player functionality). I mean, sure it will playback mp3's, but it is way to big and heavy if that's your primary reason for getting one. It's also quite limited in what formats it can playback compared to most dedicated music players.
If you on the other hand want a portable movie player that also happens to play mp3's, it's a great choice. While I get the impression that gaming isn't your primary consern, it really do have some quality titles available as well...

Homebrew, and rip+convert your own PSX games to play.

And dratatoo, yeah, you have to install the custom firmware to REALLY get the most, I'd say. However, do know that this is a simple process. Just follow the directions, no opening it required.

Actually, I find the PSP fantastic for MP3s because I like to load up lectures/podcasts and listen to them out loud while I'm shaving/drifting to sleep/etc. iPod users go through considerably more hoops than I do to get that functionality.

    Obviously a minority position, though.

On a related note, Streaming Internet Radio over wifi for the PSP is the shit, although it's a homebrew thing. Also, having that little remote on the headphone line is pretty awesome, you can keep your PSP in your pocket or whatever and still stop/play/pause or change tracks.

    I would highly recommend:

    - Killzone: Liberation
    - Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror
    - Sega Mega Drive Collection (the Mega Drive is so much cooler than the Genesis it's not funny)
    - Daxter
    - Tales of Eternia
    - Tekken: Dark Resurrection
    - Metal Gear Acid 2

I'd recommend Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops but it hasn't come out here yet.

Also, keep your eye out for God of War: PSP, Jeanne d'Arc, FFVII: Crisis Core, Brave Story, Disgaea, Final Fantasy Tactics and Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles. All of them should be coming out within the next year or so.
