Seeing better screenshots of the new ships, I'm starting to like the different pieces more...

I plan to buy something new T6 to celebrate when I get this new character to 60ish

As of now, will either be the flagship set or the miracle worker set.

Hey, whomever was asking for an invite to the Fleet on the PA channel, I'm sorry for bailing before giving one. I ended up getting distracted by family once I was done with the Miner Instabilities instance and completely forgot. I'll try to be on tomorrow night to sign you up.

Don't worry about it. Going to be a while before that guy gets high enough he can contribute anything anyways.

    Got back into the game once again having been tempted by the Reliant Light Cruiser (have wanted a T5 / T6 Miranda since the first time I played). Cruising around in my Excelsior until I hit 50, but am starting to think about the crew I will need for the Reliant. Anyone have any good build suggestions? Specialisations have been introduced since I last played, and the Pilot slot seems underwhelming unless I am missing something? Current thoughts are below, but would welcome any advice;

Cmdr Eng: EPtE, EPtW, EPtS, RevPolatity
    LtCmdr Tac: BO, BtW, BtS
LtCmdr Uni/Pilot Countermeasures, Hold Together, AP-Delta (Tactical)
Lt Sci: SciTeam, HazEmit -OR- SciTeam, PolHull
    Ens Eng: EngTeam

Can probably skip subsystem targeting, it doesn't work often or well enough really. Fire at will is the basic go-to for cruiser DPS, and tac team I is great for defense. I'd go TTI, FAWII, and FAWIII for the tac chair.

K, subsystem targeting can be dropped and replaced easily enough along with adding in TacTeam.

Are the pilot skills worth taking, or am I better going for a pure Tactical or Science guy? (Don't want a third engineer as then I could just as well be flying my Excelsior)

Anyone know a good loadout for the Intel Assault Cruiser? I was looking for something different then my Avenger BC which had New Romulus/Borg sets based around Plasma weaponry. I've got both the Dyson and Temporal Defense reps fully unlocked and Nukara's at Tier-4. Any of those sets stand out and worth the special-item grinds to pay for them?

I like the temporal def/core/shield/eng 2 piece at least, that dot bonus is excellent with all the extra procs you can get these days, more so for Sci characters. The shield is very good imo, especially if you have the shield regen bonus from the skill tree it's really fast to get back up.

You might find it worthwhile to look at a polaron based loadout? There's several weapon sets that stack together nicely, including a decent quest reward one and you could fill the gaps with protonic weapons for a bit of variety. They aren't amazing but are cheapish.

I picked this up again due to the Yogcast Jingle Jam Bundle, which gives you the TOS Bridge Officers pack as part of it. As fun as it is beaming down with Sulu, Spock, Bones, and Scotty it's also starting to make me feel nervous. I may be a Captain in name, but I'm starting to feel like Ensign Ricky, just waiting for the worst to happen.

LORD, WHAT CAN THE HARVEST HOPE FOR, IF NOT THE CARE OF THE REAPER MAN?

The Jingle Jam plus an old starter pack from an old steam sale got me to reinstall.. (the steam pack did not actually unlock and I get an invalid code message trying to redeem it)

It took me 3 days of logging in and just.. looking.. at my gear and skills to get any sense of what was going on..
my quickbars were all completely empty.

but woo, level 50-60 took like no time at all.

my jem'hadar escort carrier got a free T5-U upgrade?
    My Obelisk Carrier.. did not..
It looks like I might want to go back to the tiny single fighter bay jem'hadar ship rather than the sweet dual fighter bay'd obelisk carrier?

Obelisk swarmers are pretty nice, but yeah, stick to T6 (or T5-U) if you can.

Also, it looks like only the Advanced Obelisk carrier can be upgraded.

If I'm not mistaken, Fleet & C-Store ships require an upgrade token to make T5u (check in the ship stats and you can see if there is an upgrade available) whereas Event ships and Lockbox(and maybe Lobi) ships get a free T5u upgrade.

I've been playing again for a couple of months now. I had a free character slot so I started new again because of all the changes since I last played. I recommend that if you can if it's been as long for you as it had for me (hadn't played since the pre-Delta Rising stuff for my free Kobali ship)

Decided to give this one a go once more (Romulan front was the hot new thing when i last played).
And the UI is still a horrible mess, and looting stuff takes 5 times as long, and 3 times as many clicks, as it should.
Ground combat is still a snooze fest while space combat kicks my ass (seriously, some of those romulan ships have taken my cruiser from full to zero in less than a second).

That said, the game has it's charms, does not take huge amount of attention outside combat and there is plenty of new content to look into.
Any tips on a returning player to get their ship gear up to date fast? using ranks IX to XI mostly, and at level 60 it does not seem to be all that effective anymore.
I'm guessing it's just farming marks in dailies and deep space encounters and doing questlines is the way to go?

There is an option (off by default for some stupid ass reason) to loot with one click (or F key) with no confirmation dialog.

PVE space combat can be solved with three steps:

-Covariant shields (unless you're using a particular set shield that your build can't live without)
-Two copies of emergency power to shields*
-Stay more than 5 km from anything with a tractor beam, shockwave, or heavy torpedo/mine attack

*-Cooldowns in space are... odd. So, each of the three ranks of EPTS has a 60 second cooldown themselves. However, each rank triggers only a 30 second cooldown on other EPTS ranks and a 15 second cooldown on other emergency power to (something) skills. Because EPTS lasts 30 seconds, with two ranks you can always have a shield hardness and regeneration buff running, plus a decent shield heal popping frequently.

Thanks to the 15 second cooldown on other EPTx skills, if you're willing to dedicate four engineering powers, you can roll both shields and another system like engines or weapons continuously. Some cruiser builds combine this with two copies of auxiliary power to batteries, which tanks your aux power but splits it up between the other three, allowing them to run power continuously at 125 for shields, engines, and weapons, at the cost of only really being able to use science powers that have fixed effects (you can use science team or hazard emitters to clear debuffs, but their heal components will be negligible with aux2batt running).

Hopefully they won't cheap out on the last couple days this time. We haven't gotten better than a low-tier ship or shuttle since the Admiralty system came out.

Edit: I see mid-season previews have started.
    http://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/10764734-introducing:-re-engineering!

Re-engineering involves burning down loot for a new Salvage resource, which can be used to re-roll mods on equipment, including unlocking new mods.

Looks like a serious "last 1%" build project after you've filled the bottomless pit of quality level upgrades, high likely expense (in time particularly for all the loot you'll need to melt down) for very even smaller gains.

Some specifications from Borticus on Reddit and the STO forums:
-Salvaging only works on loot drops (and maybe crafted?) for now at least, due to a technical limitation the item has to come out of the RNG.
-Re-engineering is less limited, as a general rule it'll work on any item that lists its mods in brackets and has the correct number of mods in its item name for its quality - special items that lose a mod for a built-in power or have an extra mod for their quality level (Sword of Kahless, for example), or which don't enumerate their mods (set items) can't be re-engineered.
-Salvaging also gives crafting materials which are not used for re-engineering.
-You can roll one, several, or all mods at a time, and pick which ones while leaving ones you're happy with alone. The first mod is the most expensive, and the cost goes down for each additional mod, so it's
-Crafting-only mods (like [Arc]) are still crafting-only and can't be re-engineered into. They CAN be re-engineered OUT of, at which point they're lost.
-All epic mods (the ones with two stats, like [Acc/Dmg]) have a hidden third Dmg on them in addition to the two listed. The first few epic mods were actually bugged - they all had one stat and Dmg, but the Dmg mod applied twice. Rather than fix the bug, they've decided to call it a free perk of gold-level weapons and roll it into all epic mods.

Anniversary ship is announced, event starts on tuesday 23rd.

    8bd043d1a97a828ea2f63e74df7dccb41515806830.jpg
    Denorios-class Bajoran Interceptor [T6]

Originally used exclusively in defense of the planet Bajor, this style of vessel has been upgraded over the years with Federation technology, and become useful in short-range exploration on both sides of the Wormhole (aka "Celestial Temple") near Bajoran space. These nimble strike ships have been slowly phased out of official Bajoran use now that Bajor is an official member of the Federation, allowing for the capable escorts to be offered to worthy captains from all corners of the galaxy.

This starship features a Lieutenant Commander Tactical/Pilot Specialist Bridge Officer seat, and a Lieutenant Universal/Pilot Specialist Bridge Officer seat.

    Harrying Maneuvers (Starship Trait)

Activating Emergency Power to Engines or any Pilot Bridge Officer Ability will temporarily grant you a major increase to Accuracy Rating along with bonuses to Shield Penetration and Armor Penetration. In addition to these bonuses, your weapons gain a chance to render one Subsystem offline at random once per second. This bonus may only be gained once every several seconds.

Obscure lore fact: The size of a Klingon's belt buckle indicates how many times he's been believed dead for an extended period of time. Because with very few exceptions, this number is zero, it doesn't come up much, but here we see Martok modeling the largest buckle the Empire has ever seen, forged in the fires of Borath from the bones of his enemies.

In a shocking twist, the next lockbox is Discovery themed! https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/10772124

3 ships, nothing for Romulans in a warbird flavour which I am sure will go down well.

    Crossfield-class Science Vanguard [T6]
    6fc056e455e3fd456a4c3525c85da7791516137692.png

Comes with a teleport console and an interesting trait
    Black Alert

A temporary adjustment to the spore drive allows temporally-displaced duplicates of your ship to assail the targeted foe with torpedo spreads for a brief period of time. Initiate this sequence by activating Beam: Overload, Canon: Rapid Fire, or any Intelligence Bridge Officer Ability.

    Sarcophagus Dreadnought Carrier [T6]
    d12ed4600e829aecb99221948ad0b7301516137749.png

Sort of a tractor beam repulsors console, but a pull and
    Honored Dead

In times of war, the honored dead will serve as your shield. As your Hull is depleted in combat, the casualties you suffer will be added to the defensive capabilities of your vessel, resulting in stacking benefits to Damage Resistance and passive Hull Regeneration. Once you reach maximum stacks of this, additional damage will instead grant a small amount of Temporary Hit Points.

    lastly, in the lobi store

    Walker-class Light Exploration Cruiser [T6]
    9663e86fd346cc7211312eb0a2fcf7bd1516137806.png

With a play dead console and
    Vulcan Hello

During early encounters with the Klingon Empire, it became apparent that only an outward show of force would earn their respect, and open lines of communication with their warriors. The Vulcans were the first to adopt this tactic in a widespread manner, and this technique is named in honor of those early encounters. When entering combat, your Weapons gain a Shield and Armor Penetration bonus, and Weapon Power Drain from energy weapon activation is reduced for a brief duration. Strike first, strike hard. It is only logical.

plus there's a bunch of other stuff, like traits, guns, costumes and so on.

The Vulcan hello trait looks like it'd be amazing for cloak ambushes, but I don't think there's anything really stupid OP in these ships, compared to the T6 Constitution box

I haven't played this game since launch. When I played, there was only one faction and that was the Federation. And the game wasn't very good back then. Ground combat was horrible and I dreaded any away missions. Space combat was ok, but I constantly felt like I picked the wrong ship - I picked the science vessel and missions weren't tailored at all to my ship, but rather just to whatever the hell the game wanted to give you, so I was constantly at a disadvantage.

And anyway, I've been looking at this game again. How is it these days? Is now a good time to jump in and start over?

Also, has anyone played this on PS4? How is it on console?

I've been playing since pretty much the free to play transition, and it's changed a lot in that time, so from launch it must be crazy!

Last couple of years they've been getting a lot more guest stars in and from the perspective of starting fresh, there's a lot of storyline to play through now. Ship choice shouldn't really affect your performance, just engineering ships are a bit more sturdy, escorts more burst damage and science is more debuff/powers oriented. I don't know if that was the case at launch though, so maybe that changed and things got balanced better. Amy career captain should be able to do fine in any ship really. I don't know how ground has changed, beyond some of the tweaks made recently. I know "Shooter mode" was added after launch but I hate that so I've not used it beyond toggling it on and saying eww.

Now is probably a pretty decent time to have a look in, on PC at least the Anniversary event starts tomorrow, so you can get the level-cap grade Bajoran ship after a quick daily quest to earn tokens over the course of the event. You can get it at level 10 and it'll wait for you until you can use it. I'd have a look through the tutorial missions and see if the changes are on point and worst case, you've lost a little bit of time.

I can't speak for how the game performs on Console, I've not heard that it's terrible if that's useful! Also, not sure exactly when the event starts for console folk, I think there's a slight delay, but I'm not sure because it's not really relevant for me :)

At launch I think they were trying to make the 3 ship types fit into the classic "holy trinity" of roleplaying games. Engineering ships were your tanks (as I recall), escort was dps, and science was support. They wanted people to group and form fleets and manage content together, so they tried to shoehorn the ships into fantasy rpg archetypes. It wasn't fun to be a solo support ship.

  • Options
    MaijinamuroMaijinamuro Registered User regular
That part was done away with from what I can tell. I just grab whatever ship I feel like. Some of the engineering ships are the highest dps now.

Ground combat is not as clunky as it used to be, I used to hate the away missions too.

I remember ground combat at launch. Having to rely on the random expose/exploit mechanic to do any kind of damage at all was less than ideal.
Still, it was kind of fun building an away team of turret summoning engineers and just creating fields of death.
