Man, I need a new game

So, I'm pretty much done with God Hand now, finally given up on ever beating that god-danned chess board on Devil May Cry 3, Pretty much know metal Slug 3 off by heart, ran out of hilarious shennanigans to pull off in Metal Gear 3, Viewtiful Joe just feels routine and I'v played way too much of that kickass Ninja Turtles fighting game on the GBA.

I'm looking for something that is pure fun and actiony really. I'm the sort of person who cannot be bothered leveling up for an hour in Disgaea because I could of used that hour whomping on ninjas in Ninja Gaiden Black (which I can't play any more since my Xbox is done busted).

I'm just after a game that is just plain fun and I can play it the way I want to. I'm a big fan of doing my own thing in games, for example, I'v got plenty of stories of all the unothodox ways I'v taken care of bad guys in MGS3, one situation started out with "What would predator do?" and ended up with Snake leaping from trees wearing thermal goggles, lobbing smoke grenades and shanking everyone as the guards were screaming "WHERE THE HELL IS HE?!", but I digress.

I enjoyed Mercninaries when I rented it so I'm tempted to give that another go, since it was very open ended, and not one problem couldn't be solved by calling in an air strike. Terrorist attack? Call in an air strike! Protect your base? Air Strike! Cat stuck in tree! Napalm strike!

One game I'v had my eye on is Stalker, I like the idea of the very free-roaming nature of the game and just taking up missions whenever you feel like it, plus the crazy physics and such sound fun, plus, I really, really enjoyed going through Deus Ex multiple times playing it multiple ways and I'v heard the game is similar. Aside from that, not sure what I'd like really, an action game I really enjoyed recently was Maximo 2 (but I enjoyed Maximo more), it was a fun romp, a great challenge and had bucketloads of character, plus, FEAR was another game I really, really, really enjoyed recentley.

I know it's not a very focused question but it's very ralrley I find a game I love to play and my game collection consists of 90% of games I don't touch because the other 10% amuse me too much. Just looking for that 'next' game. I have acsess to a PC, PS2, DS, GBA and GC (N64 and Megadrive too but I'v pretty much covered those bases).

    The GBA/DS castlevanias?

    F-Zero GX?

You've probably played all them though.

    Yuh-huh.

Yeah, I'll try and narrow this down a little. Erm-

    - Something I can just pick up and play for the sake of just playing it

    - Not too easy

    - Allow me to do my own thing/free reamong/alternate routes/etc

    - Has to have plenty of character and or/style atmosphere

    - Just something new and different

I'm actually heavily leaning towards Stalker now, because I remember that last point made me love Silent Hill 2 (for the first playthrough at least) because it was so damn surreal, atmospheric and completley alien, I'v never seen a game like it and Stalker's setting is apprently pretty similar in terms of creepiness/what the fuck-ness.

Hmm, based on the systems you own some good newer games would be TMNT for GBA, the new Custom Robo game, and God of War II. Now that I see your list though I'm not really sure any of those fit too well.

hmm. Do you like Shmups? They tick a few of the points you made, although fail hard at free roaming stuff most of the time.

I mentioned I'v played the new TMNT GBA game to death. I'v not heard much about custom robo, care to elaborate?

Now, about GOW2. I watched a freind play from about the 3/4 mark to the end, then borrowed the game from him and played to that point myself. Unless the game's combat is a little more rewarding in GOW2 i think I'll pass. I didn't really 'get off' to all the bloody deaths that made a lot of people laugh their asses off and I felt that I wasn't actually killing the bad guys or bosses, just watching Kratos do it and screw up on;y if I missed a button press. I appreciate GOW's excellent atmosphere but I don't think the game clicked to well with me. Sure, the Hydra was fucking kickass to see for the first time but it's not like fighting it again is going to be any more fun as I know exactly how the fight will turn out wheras I can whomp on the bosses from DMC3 and God Hand over and over again and have a brand new experience every time. GOW is a great game but I just felt a little detached from the action while playing, I'll give GOW2 a shot though if I hear it is a little more satisfying. Sounds like I'm dumping on the game but there is just something about it that didn't click with me.

Hmm, now that you mention it, I fucking loved Ikaruga, I'd play that same first level over and over again and be extatic when I got 5 seconds further in the game than I did in my last attempt. got up to halfway through level 4 I think (on normal) with the spinning washing machine of doom before I had to give the game back

Heh, sorry I missed where you mentioned the new TMNT game. Here is a thread about Custom Robo you can use to see if it interests you. I actually haven't played the DS game that just came out yet but I gave a description of the GameCube one toward the bottom of the page. That game is probably pretty cheap now actually and it is a good deal of fun.

Then I emphatically suggest you pick up Ikaruga, and also maybe one of the Psyvariars.

Psyvariar 1 was arcade only iirc, but then got a port to the PS2 called "Psyvariar Complete", then "Psyvariar 2: the Will to Fabricate" was arcade/DC/PS2/Xbox release in japan. Wikipedia seems to tell me that none of them came out in the USA, so if you have the ability to play imports on any of those consoles (I imagine DC is the easiest, or Xbox (what I have Psyvariar 2 for)

Okay, after reading this much of a review I decided I didn't need to read any more
Bitches. That’s what I thought when I first heard the gaming journalists screaming about the difficulty level of Konami’s outstanding new Contra: Shattered Soldier. They’re wimps too used to bopping in Blinx, punks that lost their hardcore edge on shitake like Bruce Lee: Quest For The Dragon. How dare they propose to rate a game like this by their pissant gaming skills? It's while I'm taking in the gorgeous intro movie by comic artist Ashley Wood, damned secure in the knowledge that bitches have unceremoniously bum rushed the so-called gaming press, that the smackdown came. A rawkus guitar-laced soundtrack and a legion of bullets herald what is, honestly, the ultimate merger of 2D/3D bliss. When I died for the first time halfway through the first level, I was sure something was wrong with me. In fact, something was right with the game.

I'v got a good feeling about this one.

I've played/own Contra:SS. I prefer the same types of games as you-hard beat 'em ups. Viewtiful Joe, DMC3, Shinobi, etc. However, I have yet to beat Contra because of the stupid rating system being the only way to unlock the 6th level. It's a damn fun game but frustratingly hard to not progress because you aren't killing enough enemies :/

edit: I had the exact same problem with GoW. Too easy combat (on hardest level before God mode), the only frustrating bit was the platforming which I'm terrible at. I had the same issue in Ninja Gaiden-combat was too easy on normal or whatever, didn't have the urge to play on super hard.

As someone who loves NG/GH/DMC and feels exactly the same way about GoW as you (I bought GoW2 anyway because I loves me some good production values) regarding the lack of control, variety and skill in the combat engine: It's the same game, except with a handful more interesting combat sequences but equally poor bosses. I'm still hunting that elusive rush of pulling off awesome, memorable shit in combat on enemies that once posed a challenge as found in NG/GH/DMC, but I haven't captured it again yet.

Guys, guys. I just bought DMC3:SE for the PC and I <3 Devil May Cry, but it is pissing me off to no end.
I am trying to fiddle with the controls for the keyboard, and I get my perfect setup. Cool.

    Except somethings off.

It WILL NOT let me use the keys I mapped. It says something like; "There are commands remaining that haven't been mapped to buttons. Please reconfigure."

Holy shit, I want to blow this fucking game up right now. Everytime I start a new game, it flashes up with the gamepad control map to show me how to play. That's, fine. EXCEPT THAT I HAVEN'T GIVEN THE SLIGHTEST INDICATION THAT I WANT TO USE A GODDAMN GAMEPAD, I WANT TO USE MY FUCKING KEYBOARD, YOU ARTARD COMPUTER GAME. I just want to use my buttons!

Hotlead, you seem to be a DMC guru, help me with my keyboard woes.

    (BTW, I don't have a gamepad. :^:)

Alien Shooter: Vengeance! It's a budget title, but it's awesome. WASD for movement, shoot with the mouse. Alien slaughterfest, bunch of different weapons, pistols, shotguns, rocket launchers, energy weapons, and machine guns, and bunches of different aliens to kill, the campaign's pretty straightforward, but there's a lot of customization so you'll want to play through a few times, at least. Then there are also survival modes, which is just a constant assault of aliens to fight off. For $20, it's definitely worth it, although a bit hard to find. There IS multiplayer, but it's pretty weak. Also, demo is here http://www.fangaming.com/download.php?fileid=596

Amen amen amen. You can pick up and play any level that you've already visited, and there's some levels that are fucking hard, but you can make it through even the toughest levels in 20 minutes or less (20 minutes for the very longest ones).

I never did beat the game. The final boss was so fucking impossible. I fought him about 125 times in a row before I gave up.

It seems to me that you like balls to the wall action and you enjoy a good challenge. I would recommend Max Payne 2's Dead Man Walking mode + mods. I recommend Close to Truth and Excessive Blood Cinema Edition.

You should also give Serious Sam a try but I don't have any experience with the mods.

Unreal 2k4 also has some nice mods, such as the Ballstics mod or Alien Swarm.

Contra : Shattered Solder is good until you reliased that it to totally and complety pattern based. Most of the enemies always act the same way, or use the same 3-4 attacks in a random order. However, this doesn't mean that you shouldn't get it. It's still very good.

Also, if you haven't played ZoE2 yet, get it now. Best mech action game ever.
