I started using point buy systems for stats in my 2nd edition AD&D games because there were people at my table whom, despite being completely nice people to play a game with, had no problem saying that they rolled 18, 18, 18, 17, 16, 12.

Giving everyone six 8s and 32 extra points to spend made for nicely powered heroes that were not wildly broken (or imbalanced against people who were honest).

It's important to maintain the illusion that they aren't. That's a pretty prescriptive approach. Most of my interest in any writing is the way language moves. Tolkien, for example, is one of my least favorites because of how slow and plodding it is. If you like world building though, there is a good chance you will like him. People read and write for different reasons, and the strategies for navigating these different spaces are going to vary.

It's more for keeping the conflict interesting than worldbuilding.
