[pBp][IKRPG] Bitter Medicine - Adventure Over! Thanks for Playing!

Greeting Fellow Forumer's! I've decided to give running a Play-By-Post a shot. I present to you...
IronKingdoms_Logo.png

The Iron Kingdoms RPG is set in the same world as the Warmachine/Hordes wargame (which in turn is based on the same world as the D&D3.5e setting), It is Fantasy meets Steampunk. It's pretty great.

Western Immoren suffered 200 years of brutal oppression by the vile Orgoth; a soul-harvesting, freedom stealing, dark magic using race from across the sea. Only the Gift of Magic and the resulting advances in steam technology and alchemy led the peoples to rise up in another 200 years of rebellion. The invention of firearms and giant constructs, known as Colossals (to be replaced in the modern age with the iconic Warjack), finally allowed the invaders to be repelled from the lands. In its place rose the Iron Kingdoms: noble Cygnar, mercantile Ord, imperial Khador, recently conquered Llael, vile Cryx and fantatical Protectorate of Menoth. Bordered by the Elvish nation of Ios and the dwarven clans of Rhul. Recent wars have erased borders and displaced races from ancestral lands. Dragonspawn hordes descend from the mountains to wreak havoc, Trolls rage from their forests and mountains to seek revenge and the Elves have emerged from their isolation to search for answers. Explore quaint villages and modern soot covered cities. From the frozen mountaintops and dense jungles to ancient ruins and barren desserts....from Political Intrigue to Straight Up Murder Hobo-ing....the time for adventure is now!
tumblr_macyfrb2QI1qff9quo1_500.jpg

Bitter Medicine is a PbP being run with the Iron Kingdoms Role-Playing Game system by Privateer Press. Bitter Medicine is the newest published adventure from Privateer Press and I think a decent place to start. Basic rules can be found within the introductory adventure Fools Rush In.

Set against the backdrop of the Upper Wyrmwall Mountains, a terrible sickness has infected the city of Bainsmarket, breadbasket of the nation of Cygnar. The actions of a nefarious highwayman and his ruthless gang will endanger the lives of thousands in the city and untold numbers across the realm should the sickness be allowed to spread.

I'm looking for 4 to 5 players, starting with new characters. For character submissions, let's start with a simple character concept and brief blurb, then we can get on with the crunch. Due to the contents of the story, it is appropriate if the characters are sympathetic to the nation of Cygnar. However I'd be willing to work with a player to shoehorn in a fantastic concept that doesn't quite fit. One thing you must include in your concept is your characters reason for being aboard the Gilded Star. A passenger and freight train running north along the Market Line from Steelwater Flats to Bainsmarket.

If all goes well, we can keep adventuring but let's take it one step at a time and run through the official module before branching out. Obviously, previous experience with the setting and system is preferred but not necessary.

Lets have some fun!

    Meet the Party!

@Mikey CTS - Kaelin Bastille (Llaelese Aristocrat/Field Mechanik)
    Hullabaloo.jpg
A noble Llaelese refugee looking for a home after losing her family in the Khadoran invasion. Growing up Kaelin was very interested in the 'jack who tended the vineyard. She took to her studies well but seemed to have a natural talent for maintaining and repairing Monsieur Sifflets, her affectionate pet name given for the 'jack. Her family were famed dissidents during the Fall of Llael, sending arms and funds to the resistance. Inevitably they drew the attention and the ire of Khador. In response the Khadoran army firebombed the vineyard. Monsieur Sifflets, who had not been cortex wiped in far too long, rushed into the house and rescued Kaelin. Kaelin and Sifflets, at her insistence, have since been ferried from safehouse to safehouse by the resistance. The burn scars covering her left shoulder and hip remind her daily of her loss. The good news is sympathetic parties may have found distant relatives in Cygnar.

@Rainfall - Shael Asir (Iosan Mage Hunter/Storm Sorcerer)
    l5zys87t8jon.jpg
Despite her best efforts, Shael stands out from those around her, her 5'10" and 100 lb frame impossibly lean, and she moves with a fluid speed that is too quick for the eye to follow. Her dark hair is cut short, standing up from her head in defiance of any kind of hairstyling she could attempt if she bothered, and her blue eyes are almost bright enough to glow from beneath the hood of the nondescript cloak that covers her, although they are frequently covered by goggles or gasmask in the heat of battle.
Beneath her cloak is the unmarked armor of the Retribution's Mage Hunters, the light armor plates atop the plain leather and chainmail protecting her in battle, and slung across her back is a bladed crossbow and quiver, which she wields to swift and deadly effect

@Drakeraids057 - Sophika Percic (Protectorate Paladin of the Order of the Wall/Warcaster
The idea is, She grew up in the protectorate, and was the daughter of likely an an iridian woman and a khadorian man. Her mother was excuted for heresy at some point, due not to actual heresy, but a issue with a local Scrutator. This shook her, and she tried to find meaning in the martial orders, but she didn't feel drawn to any of them like she did the paladins of the wall. As someone who had always been an outcast herself, the idea of being a literal knight in shining armor, righting wrongs and fighting for the faith appealed to her on a fairly deep level, and didn't put her under the control of people she didn't fully trust.

It was during her training as a paladin that her warcaster potential became apparent. The paladin she was learning under was killed in combat against the Cryx perhaps, and during the fight the stress and emotional turmoil caused her powers to manifest. She survived the encounter and managed to retreat with the remaining paladins. After that, she was brought in for training as a protectorate warcaster, and learned to purify herself before the Maker. She then finished her paladin training, and began acting as an errant paladin, with a battlegroup of her own.

Then she ran afoul one of the churchs which hunters. He was operating under church orders to purge a village. She decided that she wasn't comfortable with the village being purged. There was a skirmish. She lots horrifically. She was taken alive, and thrown upon the wrack, only let down. She was popular among the people, and with growing political power of the Order, they pressured to have someone who had the potential to increase their orders power significantly. Instead of being executed, ultimately, she as exiled for a period of several years.

She now wanders Caen. Her loyalty is conflicted. While her distance from home was supposed to be a punishment, it has only further made her wonder if things in her home are 'right' and what she can do to change them. Personality wise she's fairly calm and reasonable, although she is still fervently religious, but in a more quiet manner. It is very difficult to actively make her mad, an she has a bit of a hero complex, when things are wrong, she feels driven to change them, she sees her power as a gift and a curse, and avoiding exercising it is a sin in and of itself. She was pretty once but her time on the wrack and frequent battles has left her pretty scarred.

@NealNeal - Aidan Di Ormino (Llaelese Amethyst Rose Gun Mage/Spy)
    imioxvp25h7z.jpg

Aidan was a new recruit into the Order of the Amethyst Rose when Khador began its most recent campaign of brutality against Llael. During the conflict, he was assigned to protect several nobles as they retreated to Cygnar. In the intervening years, he has gone back into Llael many times in the guise of a Golden Crucible Alchemist named James di Marceau. He is currently escorting a young Llaelese girl to Bainsmarket. He doesn't know who she is or why his masters wanted him to get her, but if it is vital to the restoration of Llael, he is more than happy to do so.

He is extremely idealogical and protective in regards to Llael. Will fight and die for her freedom.
He has been jaded by experiences. He has had to kill many Khadorans and complicit Llaelese in the past.
Potentially losing faith in the nobility as Llael remains occupied longer and longer.

    @JohnnyCache - Tavish (Trollkin Long Rider/Ranger)
    PIP71026.jpg

After a period of service as an outrider for a mixed human/trollkin unit of cygnarian “irregular assets,” Tavish is making his way back to his kriel.

He went out into the Iron Kingdoms full of optimism, hoping to demonstrate the value of his people’s unique way of making war and interacting with the world, but he heads home jaded and battle-weary.

Rumors of plague only compound his anxiety.

Vetta is not one to let her size stop her from doing what she wants. As an Ironhead, Vetta is a complete gearhead. Always tinkering. Always building. Always seeking to improve and build upon past works, or really, any works in general. First and foremost, however, Vetta sees herself as a warrior. She fights for the commercial interest of Clan Searforge, both at home and abroad, applying her mechanikal knowledge towards enabling her to do the best job she possibly can. When designing her suit, she had one design goal in mind: Looking at an Ogrun, and saying "I can do better than that."

Her weapon loadout and preferred fighting style is very much similar to that of an Ogrun Bokur's, aided and enhanced by the aid of her armor. There's nothing quite like seeing Vetta leap into the fray, aided by a well-timed high-pressure steam vent around her armor's ankles and feet.

    @‌the_ender

Sure its newbie friendly! And I also don't have any mini's. I'm not much of a wargamer or painter (too expensive for my tastes) and despite absorbing the fluff, have never played Warmachine! Totally love the RPG side of it though.

Feel free to come up with a character concept (or steal one from the Fools Rush In downloadable intro and give it your own twist?) and play along. We can work through any hurdles that come up.

Oh yeah. There's enough difference in those concepts that you shouldn't feel like there isn't enough room for both in this party. This version of Kaelin was no freedom fighter, just a victim caught in the crossfire now lost. Too young to find work but too old to enter an orphanage. The current plan is she didn't actually escaped: Sifflets rescued her from the wreckage of the family home. Aidan is a man with a mission - his wandering is not without purpose. He still has a lot of loyalty to Llael and has a plan.

Hey, there you go. Maybe he's been ferrying refugees and Kaelin is just the most recent in a long line.

I like the idea of wayward refugees being gathered up. Plot ideas I can pull from in the future. Maybe a noble relative trying to get their scion back?Engages one of the last Amethyst Rose guardsmen to bring her home, blah blah blah. I dig it.

Ohh I kinda dig the idea of Spy. Aristocrat is also cool though. But man the coolness factor of a gunmage spy. That is a tough choice man.

Tell you what, if you go Spy then I'll go with Steelhawk's suggestion. If you go Aristocrat, then I go the blue collar route. So I leave that choice with you.

Searleth Waelon is a "Fixer" for an area thieves guild. He's called into play when trustworthy eyes and ears are needed on remote, developing situations which could impinge on their operations. He's been sent (or recalled, as the game may require) directly to Bainmarket from his last assignment to investigate news of plague.

If you are not tied to something as unsavoury as a thieves guild maybe something like a merchant house would fit your idea? I'm sure the Cygnar's Mercian League or even its rival House Mateau of Ord would be very interested in learning about troubles in Cygnar's breadbasket.

my character doesn't see the difference :)

Sure, he's probably pretty much a freelancer anyway.

Definitely leaning Spy. Sort of a literal second career. Stuff's he's learned/earned since the fall of Llael in service to the exiled nobles.

So I was thinking a Satyxis Thamarite Advocate/Doom Reaver before I realized that was incredibly dumb.

    So I'm thinking...

Shael Asir, Iosan Mage Hunter/Storm Sorcerer (stay with me!)
Rushed backstory goes as so: Born and bred in the Mage Hunter tradition, sent out on her first mission, and quietly took care of an old Fraternal Order Arcanist. No sweat, but she couldn't get the two human kids out of her mind. Months later, she had a long, intense discussion with an elderly Seeker who had returned to Ios. Presented with an alternative to the Retribution's rather... aggressive doctrine, she was intrigued by the thought that the other Gods were still out there, somewhere, waiting to be found. On her next mission into Cygnar, she went off-mission, using her own Mage Hunter training to keep hidden from any Retribution trackers, and since then she's been trying to use her not-inconsiderable talents to help, rather than harm, and to follow traces of the elven gods wherever they may be hidden.
Although... she does find sweet satisfaction in killing human mages, it feels a lot better when they're her own targets.

Shael's on the train to Bainsmarket because she's heard that her old Seeker friend might be there, and she's hoping to catch up to him before he leaves town, and the train is by far the fastest way.

Now, I'm taking it because it's a very interesting and mobile combo of abilities and spells, and Seeker might come up as a pick, but it's not something that Shael is going to start with, since she's pretty much just started to sever ties with the Mage Hunters and the Retribution. I wanted a character that's got a heart, and probably won't have conflict with the party members although she may cause some moral quandaries.

I am very interested in playing a Paladin of the Wall / Warcaster exiled from the Protectorate.

I don't mind the career combination, but hailing from the Protectorate has me asking for more information...

Put me on the reserve bench for sure; no great concept popped into my head today while I was thinking about this, and while I'm sure it might come, I think it's a better idea to give my slot to someone else who wants to play.

    With Love and Courage

Huh! Nice. Good luck to you guys. The last few attempts at a forum game I've tried joining in on have died pretty much right off the bat. :(

Aidan di Ormino- Former Amethyst Rose Gun Mage

@OtakuD00D‌ - Does that mean you're not interested in playing?

@Nealneal‌ - very minor detail: The train is heading north to Bainsmarket when the adventure starts.

Oops, I guessed it would heading the other way. Maybe he found her in Ironhead Station and is bringing her to Bainsmarket?
