I've always heard Zelda describes as an Adventure game. I guess there's a lot of blurring between the lines in genres though, which isn't surprising.

Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.

Watching these Mario 64 runs, it seems really clear that this was a game not necessarily made in the era of well-explored paradigms of game design. The levels seem weirdly scattershot, like the designers were just kind of making everything up as they went along.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.

It's more that it was super controversial and Nintendo of America dominated the scene through the 80s and into the 90s and really didn't want to hurt its branding.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

It literally wrote the book on 3D game design.

And another thing: I'm also continually amazed by how much they manage to do with the camera to make the levels seem much larger than they actually are to the casual player. Rainbow Ride in particular is a pile of long, winding paths that you can just long jump over if you're willing to do something that looks like you're throwing yourself into the wild blue yonder.

Both Diablo and Clock Tower (the one that actually made it to the US) were winter '96 releases. Nintendo (and others) were probably coerced to open the floodgates because of how Resident Evil came out earlier that year for the Playstation.
So as far as groundbreaking games go Resident Evil was probably responsible for birthing the popularity of the western survival horror genre, though it had been going on in Japan long before that.

Eh, Alone in the Dark was pretty damn well known prior, but it was only on PC.

I don't think PC games launched any genres prior to 2006 aside from first person shooters and like Oregon Trail, mainly because even to the early 90s not enough people owned PCs to make it popular as a gaming console

basically he'd have to redo the first thirteen minutes of the run, making it basically impossible to win the race or finish the run in the allotted time
since it's a charity stream with only bragging rights on the line and a schedule to keep, it's best for him to bow out at that point
I want to say "you'd think they'd take a safety save" but the last available save point is probably still like five minutes back... I seem to recall the Save Point in the wrecked ship not being usable until Phantoon is dead.

Yup, even in a vanilla run Phantoon is a real pain since the closest save point is so far away. He's my least favorite for this reason.
Also yaaay looks like we are probably gonna hit 1.1 million!

Diablo was...1996ish? Diablo isn't particularly horrific...
I mean, you wanna get technical, then Night Trap was a horror game.

That's 95 and is a straight up horror game.
Hell, Resident Evil was released before Diablo was.

He's still under the estimated time.
But it must suck shit to be in a race to the finish and not only lose, but have everybody just staring at you, waiting for you to finish.
