i'm not going to read an entire 17 page paper right now, but did that paper just use every speaking character? it sounds like it did

i'd be much more interested in people with a % or set minutes of screentime to show primary/secondary actors

the data may not be at all different, but shows up on screen interests me less than carries the film

reducing studies to memes seems like the most intellectually destructive way to synthesize a concept

    honestly
Females are grossly underrepresented on screen in 2012 films. Out of 4,475 speaking characters on
screen, only 28.4% are female. This translates into a ratio of 2.51 males to every 1 female on screen.
2012 reveals the lowest percentage of on-screen females (28.4%) across the 5-year sample. Only 6% of
the top-grossing films in 2012 featured a balanced cast, or females in 45-54.9% of all speaking roles. Just
over a quarter of all narrators (27.5%) are female.

Only 16.7% of the 1,228 directors, writers, and producers are female across the 100 top-grossing films of
2012. Women accounted for 4.1% of directors, 12.2% of writers, and 20% of producers. This calculates
to a 2012 ratio of 5 males to every 1 female behind the camera. Almost no changes are observed in
female employment patterns behind the camera across the 5 years studied. Together, the findings show
that the gender needle is not moving on screen or behind the camera in popular films.

its not like the abstract is giving off a diff vibe...

'totes backsliding' is not the same as 'not moving' soooo. the narrative of a steady slide against women is why the meme weaselly hops between 'worst in all years studied omg' to 'less than in the 1990s' when convenient. increases or decreases within that time period are elided.

discarding the note of 'top 100 grossing fiction films' is also troubling

memes win all the time because of one easy thing, and this is a true neuro-fact, hope your bholes are ready

when you get a piece of data, you will believe it and internalize it before your skepticism will kick in

i learned this because it's actually extremely effective when you're hit by an anxiety attack or you need to do something really stressful to just say to yourself, regardless of religion, 'god will take care of it.' or 'whatever created me or force will handle it, no big, not in my control'

Female representation in films is at its lowest level in five years, according to a USC report. And when they are on-screen, 31.6% of women are shown wearing sexually revealing clothing. That's the highest percentage in the five years the USC researchers have been studying the issue. The same goes for behind-the-scenes work-only 16 percent of all key movie production jobs in 2012 were held by women, which is actually less than in the 90's.

Another interesting thing that Bioshock Infinite did was directly challenge player agency

Like especially by the end you have to do things you don't want to do (and that Booker doesn't want to do)

And the characters straight up tell you, "Yo, too bad. You can try to wait around forever, but eventually you're doing this thing."

In a lot of games that wouldn't work, like it'd piss me off in DA:I, but it totally works with that dreamlike sensibility of Bioshock.

Same with the like sort of arbitrary, This or That choices you can make through the game. They even tell you straight up that nothing will change based on your decision there, and yet you feel compelled to go uuuugh but what if I picked the wrong waaaaay?!

here's an easy one which I thought up in thirty seconds: lower SES households are also more culturally conservative and nonwhite nonmale kids who grow up in more culturally conservative backgrounds have progressively lower self esteem as they grow up

ta-dah. the tv has disappeared. but then a communications student couldn't have written it.
