Hey people, I need a program to convert some .avi files I have into .rm (real media player) format for a friend.
Does anyone know a free program I can use? if so post the link, thanks.

Question: Why do you need to specifically convert into rm format?

Maybe for an old palm device?

I remember my palm from 3 years ago played videos, but only if they were in RM. That's my guess.

I think the file size of rm files is a bit smaller than avi's. But that is by and large the only plus.

Don't you guys hate it too when torrent files and such for a show or movie you want only gets posted in rm format? People who do that are just plain weird.

Uhhh, why? What the shit is this, format discrimination?

Being against PDF links without warning, I understand, but RMs, so what? It's just a format, you any godamn player you want, it doesn't affect you, does it?

It's harder to convert them to iPod format, for one. Also there's no reason whatsoever to post torrents in rm format instead of avi other than to make it less convenient for whatever reason.

Anyway pretty much everybody complains when .rm files are posted and not a more mainstream format like .avi so I don't know why this is such news to you. Same goes for .mkv an such too. Uploaders use those formats just to be annoying.

Which is why you should use Real Alternative if you're forced to use rm.

Here is one converter that came up that appears to have a free trial.

    Here is another.

I found both with random searches, so I can't vouch for either. Hopefully the free trials are featured enough to do the job for ya.

And because I saved this picture ages ago and this is the only time I'll get to use it:

I do have RealPlayer on this computer, I didn't ever install an alternative. Don't really know anything about the buffering thing. The software isn't all that, but... I kinda like how you can skip to different parts of a streaming file and start watching from there, unlike on WMP.

AVI has nothing to do with the filesize as it is only a container.

Quicktime does this too, and has the advantage of not being RealPlayer.

Unfortunately it has the disadvantage of being QuickTime, which is almost as fucking bad.

I burned some .avi onto a dvd for a friend but they end up going out of sync, whereas the .rms on the same dvd of the same set of files seem to play perfectly. so she wants me to convert the other files for her so they all in .rm

    thats the reason lol

Sounds like it's your DVD mastering program's fault.

Unfortunately I don't know any good ones. Anyone got any recommendations?

Wait, did you burn the avi files as DVD video (i.e. is this a disc meant to play in a normal DVD player?), if so, you probably just need to update the codecs you're using.

If you burned straight avi files to the disc as data (which is what I think you mean) then your friend needs to update their codecs. I know that one of the older XVid codecs had a problem with audio syncronisation while playing newer files.

Ultimately, updating codecs is going to be a hell of a lot simpler than re-mastering everything as .rm files.

lol I was going to agree with Illyria until the part about mkv. . . I don't know why people would have a problem with better containers, I mean, if you use media player classic, zoom, or any of the other players recognized for being good, it creates absolutely no problems.
oh well, to each his/her own.

Yeh but my friend is fairly computer illiterate and has dial up, thus me downloading and burning this stuff for her. Im thinking though that real player plays avi aswell doesnt it. and ive noticed with some of my files that tend to go out of sync on real player it sort of fast forwards the picture by a couple of seconds to re sync mid veiwing so i figure she can just play em on there. or am i just imagining things lol

I think there is an option on Windows Media Player to drop video frames to sync with audio, I have come across it a few times recently.

Just burn the installers for the codecs on the disc with the files. And Realplayer stuttering has nothing to do with any kind of self-correction and everything to do with Realplayer being utter shit.

Additionally, what the hell is that with the beginning and/or ending sentences with "lol?"

My biggest complaint about rm is not only the buffering, but the quality of the video. There are so many better alternatives.

Try using (I think) Convert X to DVD or DVD X Convertor or something like that! I'll edit the post when I get home later but it's exceptionally useful if you only want a simple DVD. Plonk a load of .avis in, rename the menus, click convert and burn and it'll do it for you.

It's not free but I -think- there's a free trial

Nah i need a converter because im still going to be doing cds of the files as they are made available, which means instead of full dvds im gunna be doing cds with maybe 1 or 2 files.
