I am getting rumblings of the US heading to a deflationary period here soon. The one article I want to read is on WSJ but pay walled. Looks like it is just rumors. You hear anything?

    mazzyx

lots of such rumblings when QE was ended. i guess the swiss franc explosion has made the discussion explode again.

Maybe that's the only way for the US to get meaningful (de facto) wage inflation

real wage increases at 5.6% unemployment? well, maybe. it's really disappointing to return to the political economy of the cross of gold strong dollarism a century onwards, though

Isn't 5.6% pretty close to "full employment"?

    Yes and no.

4% or so is full employment or kind of the goal.

But also our employment numbers are really fucked and messed with to look better than they are. We have a lot of underemployment and still a good chunk of folks who probably want jobs but stopped looking due to the market.

Its hard to do because its not like every single business is going to be closed. You going to make it so you can't get gas on Labor Day?

But it should be time and a half for hourly workers and a holiday for salaried workers (with extra pay if you have to come in)

my wife will likely never work again

should she count in the unemployment stats if she's effectively out of the labor pool?

it's a tricky business. I assume that's why BLS tracks it 6 different ways (plotting U3 vs U6 is p interesting IMO).

    It's easy.

If people have to work that day they get double time. You get paid for working, you get paid for the holiday.

life's a game that you're bound to lose / like using a hammer to pound in screws

BLS and the Fed track a whole bunch of variables. Yellen-sama actually doesn't use the base unemployment rate for decision making.

You can track a difference between those out of the workforce voluntarily like your wife or a retiree and those forced out of the workforce who still wish to work. In fact it is tracked by basically having the description, "Wants to work but not actively looking."

    US-Labor-Force-Participation-Rate-by-Age-April-2013.png
Fewer 16-19 are entering the workforce, which is actually good. All other groups haven't changed substantially recently. There's a smaller 20-24 drop off too, but a lot of that is college. The other age brackets are showing very little change in labor force participation with low overall unemployment numbers.

What little change there is comes from long term trends

For the first time at my new job, I feel I am doing bad work. Like, what I am doing today is actually hindering the productivity of the company and everyone knows it. My boss has the final say though. So now I get to make everyone's job harder while he sits on his iron throne in North Carolina.

Please tell me this is a rarity in the corporate world.
