"Maybe the law ain't perfect, but it's the only one we got, and without it we got nuthin'."
During the period of the west, there was no place that represented the lawless frontier than the Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma. To give some perspective about how lawless it was, ~200 Marshals have died since the Marshals Service was founded in 1789. 120 of died in Indian and Oklahoma territories. Historians vary but it's estimated of the 22,000 white people living there during Bass Reeve's life time, 17,000 were criminals of some kind. It was a popular place for outlaws because the tribal courts had jurisdiction over members of the five tribes living there. Everyone else was subject to federal courts. Which meant it was the job of the Marshals Service patrol it. Very few men to cover a very large territory. But the best of the bunch was Bass Reeves.
Bass Reeves was born 1838 to slave parents. Up until he joins the Marshals Service his history is a bit spotty. We do know that he ran away as a slave during the Civil War. The family story is that during a card game an argument broke out and he punched his master. Given that doing so was a hanging offense, he set out to the Indian Territory. There he met with members of the Cherokee and Seminole tribes. There is some evidence that he served with the Union Indian Home Guard Regiments during the remainder of the war. What we do know is that during this time he became a crack shot, learned the languages of most of the tribes in Indian Territory and developed a reputation as one of the best trackers in the territory.
In 1875 it became clear that the Marshals Service simply didn't have the man power to patrol the territory. Judge "Hanging Judge" Parker authorized U.S. Marshal James F. Fagan to recruit 200 deputies. The first man on their list was Bass Reeves. Now this wasn't a cushy job. Deputy Marshals were basically paid by bounties on the men they captured. And the criminals of Indian and Oklahoma territories were not soft.
“Eighty miles west of Fort Smith was known as “the dead line,” and whenever a deputy marshal from Fort Smith or Paris, Texas, crossed the Missouri, Kansas & Texas track he took his own life in his hands and he knew it. On nearly every trail would be found posted by outlaws a small card warning certain deputies that if they ever crossed the dead line they would be killed. Reeves has a dozen of these cards which were posted for his special benefit. And in those days such a notice was no idle boast, and many an outlaw has bitten the dust trying to ambush a deputy on these trails.” -Oklahoma City newspaper article, 1907
Bass Reeves was not impressed. He captured over 3,000 fugitives and killed 14 more who attacked him. He was noted for being particularly clever. He came across the three Brunter brothers. He informed them that they were wanted criminals and he was taking them in. Given that they outnumbered him three to one they seemed fairly confident that they were going to kill them. Enough so that they took a moment to read the warrant for their arrest. In that moment two of them were shot and as the third drew his weapon, Reeves pistol whipped him till he passed out.
He was noted for being scrupulously fair to everyone. He was well liked by the members of the various Native American tribes, the local African-Americans and the local Whites. He also had a reputation for being unbribable with an even handed application of the law. This was put to the test when he was given a warrant no other Marshal wanted to handle. Reeve's own son. He had killed his wife and fled. Reeves went out into the territory and brought him back two weeks later.
Bass Reeves was 37 when he joined the Marshals Service. He spent 32 years in the Marshals Service and then a further 3 years as a peace officer in Muskogee, Oklahoma until he died in 1910. There has been one direct to dvd movie made about him. But he left his mark. One of his trademarks was traveling around with a Native American companion while handing out silver dollars, leading evidence that the Lone Ranger is modeled on him. Django from Django Unchained is supposed to have elements of him in the character.

Yes. Quite often my OPs are posts from there or instant watch threads.
See reply about Witcher 2 combat in last thread.

Lord give me strength not to shave that into my face right now. I am no longer in college. My personal appearance cannot be used for cheap joke no matter how funny it is.
I am not an anime myself, but I am an anime sympathizer and an anime humanitarian. You can call me an anime ally.
I'm basically the anime Clarence Darrow. My closing argument always contains the Biblical quotation Rei 1:15: "For it is said of residents of the soil and the earth that the meek shall inherit the kaze"
NNID: Hakkekage
He really does. A proper big budget one.
hakks when the new 3ds comes out, I am going to walmart and taking a picture of the inevitable stack of majora's mask 3ds's and posting the picture once a day, making sure to batsignal you each time
It was very intuitive for me on a mouse (but plenty of others found combat very hard the first time around).
Wait, really?
How did you end up liking it, Hakkes?

Legend has it that Reeves collared seven separate bounties, including the train-robbing Jessup-Waites Gang, using the intimidation of his mustache alone.
The same mustache that saved young Sarah McCoy from drowning in the great flood of Hamahatchie Creek in 1884.
It seems like a fairly good game, another one of these "blend elements of 50 different game archetypes together" offerings not dissimilar to Tomb Raider.
Still, though, zombies. Oh, and you have to loot everything a la BioShock which begs the question of whyyyyyyyyyy?
My closing arguments generally end with "and Carthage must be destroyed."
Yes, this is it.
