There's a pretty big difference between being influenced by the things you like and defined by the things you like. Fandom is the latter. I hang out on the PA forums because I like the discourse, but heaven help me if I ever 'go to war' with another forum or some stupid bullshit

I liked the new Robocop more than the original, but I don't really like the original at all. Which, I understand i'm in the minority here. I just can't stand all the fake gore.
New one told a decent story and was executed well enough to stand on its own right instead of just drawing off nostalgia from the original like so many other remakes.
New Robocop is average. Director was miserable making it because of interference by the people with money.
Its not bad, but it lacks whatever it was that made Robocop still worth watching 30 years later.

look there's no way that, commercialized and popular as robocop got towards the end of its 80s heyday, it would've gotten a remake that incorporated the satire or spirit of the original movie
if you want to see something contemporary that captures the feeling of the 80s robocop, watch Dredd

I really liked the new Robocop but maybe I'm a sucker for what transhumanist elements there were. Also Samuel L. Jackson is great in it.
Like say, waking up company property where you can be turned off at will and repainted to suit marketing desires. Or when they alter his brain to give him the illusion of free will to make him a better killing machine, stuff like that.
Also one of the most conceptually horrifying scenes i've ever seen in a movie.
Let me guess, is it when they reveal how much of his body is left? Cause if so, yuuuuup. I love how they leave him his hand so he has at least one external reminder he's human.

I read the hand part more cynically as a PR move by them, or some way for them to get around the technicalities of a law, but yes.
The new RoboCop is on Netflix and I think everyone should watch it at least once. It gives a different take on the story that I like. It's not the exact story the director wanted to tell, but even with all the studio interference I give it a B+/A-.
Of course it's not as good as the first one, but that's a pretty high bar.
I thought it lacked the nihilism of the original, and that was the main aspect I liked about it.

It took me a while to remember where I'd seem the army guy from that movie before. Watchmen.

New Robocop is legitimately better than old Robocop in some ways
The story honestly makes a lot more sense, like, as a narrative for a movie
I wish it had been totally divorced from the remake aspect, because I think it would be a lot better regarded if people weren't comparing it to the original

I bet it's both, I'm sure played well with focus groups.
So, RoboCop was about getting a small amount of justice in a corrupt world. He doesn't kill all the bad guys, and the world isn't saved from the all the evil people. He wins a small amount and that's enough, because it has to be. Because that's all you get. At the end of the movie he has only made a minor improvement. The world is still corrupt, and evil still exists. People are still poor and people are still hurt for no reason. Media is still dumb and entertainment is still mindless.
It's very much the 80s answer to superheroes. It's V for Vendetta if no one showed up at the end.
I once watched original RoboCop on tv, only instead of cutting to commercials it cut to three minute segments of RoboCop 2. It was the most confusing four hours of tv.
the new robocop isn't bad, but it gains nothing from being robocop other than a name we all recognized. Which if it was meta commentary then that's fine, but as a movie it's just kinda there.
I couldn't get mad at it if i tried but at the same time, i didn't care about most of the stuff going on during it, other than if they make a follow up that's Sorta like robocop 2, and also an R movie, they set up some okay ground work.
that said i still really love the first two robocops, and i will fight anyone who says robocop two is bad.
Peter Weller is great. He was also a memorable character in 24's fifth season, and was apparently also in Dexter's fifth season.
And he has a Ph.D. and has taught history courses. He's awesome.
Also he gets annoyed when people take his classes just because he's a celebrity. Which is understandable, I think!
I'd take his class because history is awesome.

Not gonna lie, being taught by Peter Weller would be a big incentive for me to take one of his classes. But I like art and world history and would take it as seriously as any other class. I wouldn't do it if he were teaching, like, a math class.
I used to listen to the White Album record over and over again. On a record player. In the 90s.
My mom was a pretty big hippie and doesn't like throwing stuff away.
as a kid, I used to listen to the Disney Disco LP over and over. specifically the song Macho Duck.
pretty sure we still have it.
One of my Pandora stations plays music from the various Disney animated films. Every time it plays You've Got a Friend in Me, I instinctively think that Be Prepared will be coming up next.

I have every Alice in Chains album. Not that you would think that now since all I really listen to is indie rock and electronica. But I totally do.
Edit: just realized this is like... 15 pages late.
But it loses its thread
I'M SO OLD NOW.
I heard Once by Pearl Jam the other day.....
In an elevator....
As a synthesized cover...
I wept a little
And I thought, "Probably not?"
Sorta spoilers, I guess? Doesn't really reveal any plot. Also the movie is like 25 years old.
What? That's not a side note.
Peter Weller is Buckaroo Fucking Banzai
IE, the greatest actor of all time!

I went to his panel this past year at DragonCon and it was cool seeing him get into topics and going way off script.
