PAX East Pinny Arcade Panel Announcement

Hello, fellow pin pals!

I am super happy to be able to announce that a Pinny Arcade panel will be held at PAX East 2015!

At 8:00 PM, Saturday, be in line at the Arachnid Theater for one hour of fun with your pin brothers and sisters!

Your hosts will be myself, @pureval ‌, @TheAggroCraig and @SerpicoBC‌. We will cover a variety of topics, and we will adjust our presentation to a more seasoned crowd, while not forgetting to properly greet new folks to the hobby!

As you will surely find out when the official schedule goes live, we made sure there would not be any major Pin event going on at the same time, so you're sure to not miss a thing and still come to the panel!

I can't wait to see all of you guys there. See you in Boston!

I have one big problem with the Panel. I want it to be less about the thepintrader.com and more about getting started into pin trading. At south I felt like it was a big ad for your website which it shouldn't be.

I felt like it was a good 101 intro to pin trading covering lots of aspects of the hobby. Knowing what resources are out there, including thepintrader.com is certainly one of those aspects that is important to be aware of. But there were 4 people on that panel, and they all talked about different things. I suspect this one will cover various aspects of the hobby as well. I look forward to watching it.

Certainly others can submit panels of their own with content they would rather see. But props to Shadowscars22 for taking the plunge and organizing the first when others thought it was too early.

I felt like the advertisement at South(under 30 secs or w.e. it was) was fine, but after that The Pin Trader Website was dropped ~10 more times. This caused from some people I talked to people comparing 'this pin is $X on The Pin Trader, and that one is $X….so I need another 4 of that ones value to trade you mine'. I didn't personally see it, but I heard a few people discussing this kind of trade happening.

While I understand it is a resource that is out there for people to aquire pins, I think it needs to really be stressed that trading shouldn't happen this way…or we will lose new potential traders because of it. Plus the site shouldn't be used as that kind of reference to begin with.

So I understand Shadow, you will want something in there about the site, I'd just prefer to hear less site drops if this continues to be a thing.

I think feedback like this is critical to the panel getting better with each iteration. The goal of it is to education new pin traders, give experienced pin traders more tips, and continue to foster the sense of community that got me into this hobby to begin with.

Never be afraid to give us info that we can use to give you folks what you want!

Instead of repeating fayt's whole comment, I'll just hit agree. I think the South panel was overall headed in the right direction, just would like to see more emphasis on community over financials.

Also, yes, please hammer out a plan to record the panel. Someone had a good handheld recorder (sudopoop?), lining up a few beforehand would be sweet.

Thanks everyone for the feedback about the South panel, which will certainly be taken into consideration.

I just also want you guys to understand, that I spend lots of time and efforts throughout the weekend to get the word out about my site - if you hear people talk about it, or use the prices on there as a guide (which I need to say, is much more reliable than eBay when trying to pin a numerical integer value on a pin), it might not be because of what they heard on the panel.

That being said, I will be mindful about the time allowed to talk about it - but I do not consider it more wrong than speaking of eBay. I also like to be able to sponsor the panel by giving prizes, and that costs money. I guess all I want in return, is that even though thepintrader might not be your thing, maybe it is someone else's thing, and I'd like that someone else not to be ostracized or judged for it.

Dont get us wrong, @Shadowscars22, I think we really apreciate the work that you did for the South panel, overall I think it turned out great and it was really good of you to take charge and make it all happen. A pinny arcade panel something I think should happen often, perhaps at every PAX if possible, but I do think it swayed slightly too much into the financing and selling of the pins. And not that i have any problem with you or your site, but i think a little less of all the finance talk and more about the community and socialising aspects would have been better if we want to use the panel to build the community.

That is certainly a very bad way to trade, PinTrader is a convenience service and that comes with a price, as it should really. It's not a good way to value a pin though, much like say the TV show Pawn Stars for an easy analogy, one has to take in to account the cash value of something is far less than the retail value. Shop prices have no business in individual trading.

I think that certainly should be mentioned, trading on retail pin value isn't going to help any one and will likely cause more sour trades.

That's already the plan - among other things, the Q & A could be a bit longer to allow for more questions, and we'll share more stories about the awesomness of the hobby.

I think different people value pins based on different factors - as @SerpicoBC puts it so well in his presentation, and that means there will be people who disagree on trades because they don't assign value in the same fashion. Which is fine! I don't think there is any right or wrong when it comes to this - it's your values and beliefs that should determine how you "rank" or "value" your pins, not how others tell you to.

But yeah, I'm not saying we shouldn't add a word of caution concerning the sole use of monetary value for trades - You'll see, I'm sure you guys will like the panel even more this time, and the next, and the next...

Good point here. Different people have different tastes etc. It will take some time before everyone will straight out enjoy it fully.

Alas I took it down last week, as I thought everybody that had wanted it, snagged it. If you still need the audio though, PM me, will send you a link, the file is pretty darn big though as it's a raw wav file.

Can you guys edit your panel description to tell people to go to the pin trading event prior to the panel or they'll be missing out on the biggest opportunity for trading?

Yeah, maybe scheduled it before the trading event is a good idea for the future ones.

I'm not sure this is possible, I asked already and didn't get a positive answer. It's okay though, I doubt anyone interested in the pins would see one but not the other on the schedule. I hope so.

The schedule is a vast and complex beast. Any thing that got interconnected in it (one panel description referencing another) will then get out of date and wrong when things are shifted around. Besides at South at least we had more people at the Pin trading then the panel, I think your advertisement if anything should go the other way around.

Jonathan works for me at all PAXen, and at south he was the logistics/prize giving helper during the panel. He helps me prepare the visual presentation if any, and is there for the panelists if we need anything.

He's a real cool dude too, don't be shy if you want to ask him anything!

Edit: I'm trying to coerce him into making an account on the forums - he keeps getting asked who he is on here
