New England Pinny Meet up-suggestions and info gathering

edited March 2015 in Pinny Arcade
What: A gathering of area Pinny enthusists outside of PAX.
Who: Any Pinny Pal who lives close enough or is willing to drop everything and fly across the country at a moments notice if the word "Pinny" is involved.
Why: To have fun and hang out.
When: TBD I am thinking in the April May June window.
Where: TBD Below are a few places I thought of off the top of my head along with some pros/cons. If you have a better idea or want to agree with one posted please do so!

Funspot
What: The world's largest arcade. Has tons of classic video games, a decent number of classic pinball games, an indoor mini golf course and more. These are the guys who did the PAX East arcade for every year except this one.
Pros: Great selection of games, fun for all ages. Reasonable prices on both tokens and prizes. Located in the Lake Winnipesaukee area so there is tons to do outside the venue. Offers free "party areas" so we can meet up and trade easily.
Cons: Location. Unless you live right near it you will have a drive. A pretty drive, but a drive.

Pinball Wizard
What: A classic arcade filled with pinball games. Has a good selection of classic games.
Pros: Pizza place next door has a very good reputation (I have never eaten there personally).
Cons: Not as much to do outside the venue (at least that I know of). Chrage for use party rooms.

Salisbury Beach
What: A beach. Several arcades and junky food. Sand and water.
Pros: Centrally located, lots and lots to do.
Cons: No free bathrooms (seriously), no safe place to trade pins. Tourists. Parking can be pricey.

Hampton Beach
What: see above, located slightly North.
Pros: Free bathrooms.
Cons: See above but add tons more tourists

The White Mountains
What: Mountains. Trails. Tourist traps.
Pros: Pretty, tons of tourist things to do.
Cons: Location. Even if you live in the mountains you probably live no where near where will meet up. Bugs and dirt. No Wifi or 4G.

Hilltop Fun Center:
What: A family arcade. Go Karts, Mini Golf. Lazer Tag arena. Casino style arcade games.
Pros: Price, they have some really good packages available. Pretty easy to get to. Awesome Lazer Tag arena.
Cons: No classic games, all ticket redemption. No outside food allowed. Prizes are expensive.

I'm bumping this because I forgot about posting in it.

Out of these, Pinball Wizard is my favorite (95% of the reason is because it's the closest). Also, the pizza place Supa's next door (owned by the same one in Lowell!) is great.

Funspot is great, but that's a whole day trip between going up/back for me.

There's also Funworld in Nashua, I haven't been there for a while but the arcade was pretty solid iirc.

I'm in New England too and I love pinball!

Well then... we might have something here for the near future.

I'm game for any Friday/Saturday night in June or something, so there's something to work with.

I do love me some pinball! Alright it's a date*!

Craig and I talked breifly about it in the WhatsApp but I'll be up in Boston at the end of May/beginning of June if anyone wants to hang with me and @scrattatat!

Well let's make something happen that weekend then. You're flying in on 5/30, the Saturday, correct? I'm game for whatever that day/evening or Sunday afternoon so long as we plan it out ahead of time. And of course we need everyone else's input!

Yep yep! I'll be getting in Saturday night and staying through Tuesday evening so I'm down to hang somewhere in there.

What kinds of things are good to do on Saturday afternoons? I've been in kind of an outdoorsy mood lately...

Where exactly in New England is everyone?

Umm..... there's plenty of stuff I guess, just a matter of where to go. I'm about 30 minutes north of Boston (near Haverhill), so I'm smack in the middle of where most of you are, so whatever is fine by me.

@rentfn @pureval what are your thoughts since you both vanished from the thread?

  • purevalpureval Somersworth, NH Registered User regular
I am in NH near the Maine border (as in I can see part of Maine from my bedroom window. My only problem right now is scheduling time off at work is tough.

GASP - you're so close to me!

I'm willing to drive a bit. I'm flexible. I hope I'm around whatever date gets picked and not on travel for work.

Er, I think I meant to say Sunday afternoons up there, since @evanephrine doesn't get in until late Saturday. I can't read!

Anywho, the pinball place sounds like a lot of fun if you guys want to do something inside in the afternoon/evening.

Another option is if anyone can/wants to haul out to Carlisle (MA) for an SCA Archery practice on Sunday (10am to 1pm) that's also available - $2 for the whole afternoon, plus he does instruction which is really nice - but I'd need to know ahead of time so we don't surprise the guy that runs it!

I'd be up for the Arcade. not sure I could make it out to the Archery place. I'm watching the thread and will try to make whatever is decided!!

  • TheAggroCraigTheAggroCraig Ultimate Lucky Douchebag MassachusettsRegistered User regular
Archery sounds super fun (though I think I've shot a bow maybe twice ever?), but I say we do whatever gathers more people together this time around.

Well then - I propose meeting up at Pinball Wizard at ~3-4 on Sunday 5/31? Thoughts? GO!

    * Assuming we do the afternoon, I'm still hoping to go to Archery practice, so anyone who wants to join in that as well is welcome to. Just let me know!

Archery is tempting, I'll get back to you on that one. And that should work for me on Sunday, and for the record they close at 8PM, so there's plenty of time!

  • evanephrineevanephrine ev-an-eff-rinn Seattle, WARegistered User regular
Sounds awesome to me! Does this pinball place serve adult-type beverages perchance?

  • TheAggroCraigTheAggroCraig Ultimate Lucky Douchebag MassachusettsRegistered User regular
They don't, unfortunately... and neither does anywhere in the immediate area. We could always grab a drink or something afterwards, depending on time and such.

For the record, the layout of the arcade is pretty much just lines of arcade games throughout the building, and it's a pretty decent size, and they have a pretty large list of games on their site. There's a good amount of pinball, fighting games, classic arcade, etc. And we can relive the Omegathon and play some Pac-Man Battle Royale!

I'll plan to bring some tradeable pins too for shits and giggles, idk if we'll actually have time for it but why not.

So let's nail this down as a 3PM meetup, at Pinball Wizard. This is flexible of course if you can't come for a bit, I assume we'll be around for at least a few hours.

    So far we have:

    Me
rentfn + wife + pin baby
    scrattatat
    Evanephrine

WHO ELSE WANTS TO HANG OUT WITH US? Pin trading, food, arcade games, how does this not sound appealing?!

Sadly I most likely have to miss out. Unless I end up getting Sunday off (highly unlikely) or getting an opening shift (sadly even more unlikely). Figures. Play Q*bert in my honor guys.

I was thinking of trying to do another meet up in July. I am off (or damn well better be) from the 12th thru the 18th. Anyone free at that time? Maybe we could do Funspot instead this time.

  • TheAggroCraigTheAggroCraig Ultimate Lucky Douchebag MassachusettsRegistered User regular
It would have to be on the 12th or the 18th.
