American Primitivism [chat]

VanguardVanguard But now the dream is over. And the insect is awake.Registered User, __BANNED USERS regular

Folk music saw a renaissance in the 1950s when people like John Fahey, Leo Kottke, and Robbie Basho basically reinvented the acoustic guitar. It's notable for many reasons, but one of them is that their incorporation of Indian ragas and psychedelia predated the whole 60s countercultural movement. Listen to these tracks and remember this is one person playing a single track. This is American Primitivism.

There's been a resurgence of musicians carrying this torch recently, most notably Daniel Bachman and James Blackshaw. The formula hasn't changed, and it's still awesome.

You can't tell him what to do. You're not even his real dad!

Good thing too. That would be an amazingly cruel thing for a father to say to his son.

I like the implication that it's some sort of Rover Vampire stalking its prey on Mars.

Also, if you ever get a chance, read the book The Martian by Andy Weir. It's like Castaway on Mars* and it is tangentially related to the above webcomic.

    * Or more appropriately, the Lonely Astronaut:

Speaking of "real dad", I used the kid's full name the other day when he was trying to drag a huge tin of Danish butter cookies off the counter yelling "more more more".

    My god, the power.

    The unbelievable power.

Thinking back, I think I was a goody two-shoes as a kid specifically so I would hear my middle name as little as possible. I hated it. SO MUCH. Still kinda do.

It is a Jewish tradition to use the first letter of the name of a deceased family member as the first letter of your child's name. I can't imagine naming a child without that restriction. There are SO many names in the world.

The thing that always strikes me about cartoons from that era is that for a lot of it there are only like four frames per second of animation a lot of the time
