yup. conversely alfian sa'at and other pop-opposition commentators have been railing against the revisionist tendency
as is usual when real academic debates spill out into the popular arena, both sides are exaggerating. there's certainly a tendency of the state historical narrative to exaggerate the dysfunctionality of singapore in 1959, but likewise the opposition does the same, because really nobody wants to identify with the battles of that era. opposition activists want to say: bus fares are too high now. but they know that they can't say: "hey. hey. remember when we had campus riots over bus fares? that was a really great form of participatory democracy and it's a pity it can't make a comeback." without repelling singaporeans used to urban peace
but heroes without opposition isn't really rare in national mythmaking, I think - you get Bismarck unifying Germany without any real sympathy for the free towns, the American Revolution without, apparently, any loyalists, that sort of thing.
@simonwolf
Francia united as an Empire that stretches partway into Germany in the 800s and is still going strong - the breakup of the Abbasids in the 900s into balkanised warring emirates is good from the "breaking the green blob" perspective, but I'm not sure how long it will last before another ruler unites them again
Francia being a united empire also means nobody capable of preventing them from expanding into Spain, so I'm sure the blob will cover everything east of Frankfurt soon enough
fortunately the whole "united island" thing means I've been able to stop Francia's attempted invasions twice now just by stomping on their armies as soon as they land

once upon a time the govt wasn't really into Asian Values Supremacism and was much more into attacking the New Left

the decadence is... delicious
a big part of the 1970s counterculture was agitation about rhodesia as proxies for local debates about race
you might think that a socialist postcolonial government in would be more enthusiastic about anticolonialism. there was a period where the PAP was itself agitating in favour of "afro-asianism". but by the 1970s, the local concern had shifted from getting the British out to persuading the British to continue to maintain the naval base, which at the time employed some 15% of the entire labour force, and persuading the West to retain non-protectionist policies. this made Singapore rather resent Western socialist politicians rising to power on the basis of promising withdrawals, tariff barriers, detente, etc.

It's this terrible conundrum
do I support the "rightful" heir, ronya, with his Midas Touch
or do I support the usurper Eddy, with his charm and ne'er-do-well attitude
now I know how the English nobility felt during the War of the Roses
I will repeat myself and say that I discovered that I am out of paper towels and I made my laptop sticky and smelling of scotch*
