Man I grew up watching Halladay and this news is just crushing me. He seemed like such an all-around great guy too. Fuck.

I just saw the Halladay news... that's so awful! I used to absolutely love watching him pitch.

Ugh! What an awful year 2017 has been. Rest in peace, Roy :(

I agree that Altuve deserved it, but I think "choked" is unfair. He was a big part of beating the Twins, sucked in the ALCS, but was solid in the ALDS.

Judge played the best defense of his life and only struck out a record number of times against the worst strike zone in the league. He did fine.

Seriously though the umps were calling stikes 3 inches + off the plate low and away. There was no way a fastball hitter like Judge was going to be able to do well because there was almost no risk of missing with the curve ball. You saw him swing at a lot of shit but like... half that shit was going to be a called strike anyway.

Ramirez was only there because they had to have a third finalist and Mike Trout spent too much time on the DL this season to get enough votes.

Altuve is awesome though, glad he won it.

Jose Ramirez had a great season and was right there in WAR, while the postseason is not supposed to be considered

I still go altuve if I have a vote but I don't know how much of that is anti-yankee bias

This has been a very slow offseason as everyone waits to see where Shohei Ohtani and Giancarlo Stanton end up.

But hey, the Mariners traded for second baseman Dee Gordon to stick him in center field? They got more international bonus money with him too and it makes me wonder if Seattle asked Miami about the money first and they were like 'Well..... if you take Gordon and his contract off our hands...' and the M's just found some place to stick him.

Sweet. Angels got Ohtani. I hope he lives up to the hype but at the very least he stands to be a bargain pitcher compared to free agency options.

I feel bad for the Miami Marlins players. Everyone wants to be traded because they don't want to be stuck playing for the Marlins after the front office went full on fire sale this winter. Giancarlo Stanton is gone, Marcell Ozuna is gone, Dee Gordon is gone. Now Christian Yelich and JT Realmuto are asking to be traded, they want off that sinking ship.

So how many losses do you think the Marlins will hit this year? A new all time worst record? It could happen the way things are going.

    http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory/apnewsbreak-indians-removing-chief-wahoo-logo-uniforms-52686021
The Cleveland Indians announced Monday they are dropping the Chief Wahoo logo from their uniforms next year, bowing to decades of complaints that the grinning, red-faced caricature used in one version or another since 1947 is racist.

The move came after protracted discussions between team owner Paul Dolan and baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred.

The cartoonish image of a big-toothed American Indian with a scarlet face and a single feather in his headdress will come off the team's jersey sleeves and caps starting with the 2019 season.

"Major League Baseball is committed to building a culture of diversity and inclusion throughout the game," Manfred said in a statement. He said the logo "is no longer appropriate for on-field use."

The decision is unlikely to quell complaints from Native American organizations and others who see the symbol as offensive. The Indians will continue to wear the Wahoo logo in 2018, and even after it is gone from the uniform, the club will still sell merchandise featuring the mascot in the Cleveland area.

Way too late, not far enough, but it's a first step.

I'm waiting for the puff piece about the guy who created the logo, and how he's in dire financial straits because they are changing the logo (yes, it's likely property of the team and has no affect on any one person, but someone is going to try to dig up that artist and interview him).

We just need a sportswide agreement that City-name Racial-group is a bad idea for a sports team naming scheme. It seems so obvious but too many people are 'but tradition!' as their only defense.

Well, keep in mind that a lot of these teams were named when we were extremely racist.

And also we're still extremely racist.

Eh. It’s not like you can’t do it tastefully. And fundamentally the purpose of team naming is to evoke both unity(within the community) and conflict(without).

The problem is that what was understood at the time to be both comedic and reverent* no longer is. But it’s not like it’s impossible to do. We have teams named after historical cultures all the times. The Seminoles are fine with the Florida Seminoles as an example even if no one else is (don’t put your spear in other peoples fields you asses)

Use a picture from a local tribe and call yourselves the Americans/that tribes name.

*yes, it never was. But it wasn’t understood to be so.

Seminoles are the gold standard. The University reached out to the tribe. Made an agreement (including funding from ticket sales) that go to the tribe as royalties. The tribe itself set down some rules on a few things. And in turn they send folks out in full regalia to games and stuff.

The whole thing is an agreement but the tribe both gets monetary recompense and also say into any actions taken by the school in its name.

And even that is not without controversy since it's tied up with a whole bunch of other issues like casinos, who exactly is in tribal leadership, etc.

Yeah, it's rough because FSU's partnership is with the Seminoles of Florida, and not also with the Seminoles of Oklahoma. Also I would like to see the chop be left behind, which iirc isn't sanctioned by the Seminoles.

    Mets GM threatens Mets fans:
In what I can only assume is a threat, in the vein of “you kids quit monkeying around back there or I will turn this car right around,” Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has made it clear that Tim Tebow will play in the major leagues:
“Somebody asked me whether I think he’ll be a major league player at some point,” Alderson said after a Sunday workout at First Data Field. “I think he will play in the major leagues. That’s my guess. That’s my hope, and to some extent now after a year and a half, a modest expectation.”

Though with the mound visits, I really wonder how many regular season games would be affected by the 6 visit rule? Especially since it doesn't cover pitcher-catcher visits.

It does cover pitcher catcher visits is my understanding. And I would guess quite a lot of games would be affected, because while there aren’t always 6 in every game the limit will constrain visits below that as teams do not want to go up against the limit if they don’t have to.

    From the article:
There are, of course, exemptions to the mound visit rule. The following does not count against each team's mount visit total:

    A pitcher-catcher conference between batters.
An infielder goes to the mound to clean his spikes during rainy conditions.
Any visit involving a potential injury.
Any visit after a pinch-hitter is announced.

So, in between batters is ok, just not during a batter. So, that would have some effect, I think.

Was just reading a neat article about some infamous on-field cheaters. What is the theoretical point of the pitcher scuffing the ball? I assume rubbing schmutz on it is supposed to help with movement on breaking balls, but what is scuffing supposed to accomplish? Grip for the pitcher, or does it theoretically affect contact between the bat and ball?

Neither. It alters the aerodynamics of the ball.

Not pre-scuffed, but balls are coated with a special mud before the game - a task done by the officiating staff, not the teams.
