Washington Mutual is good, great in person customer service, not so good over the phone.

Key bank sucks sooooo bad. They charge a $5 fee to cash a check drawn on Key bank...

So, basically, a $100 check written on a Key bank account is worth $95, a $1 check is worth $-4.

Which completely breaks the point of a check, which is: Take it to the bank for face value.

Your missing the point, Wren. They charge you for every check you write. So they charge you for a book and then they charge you to process each check in it. If that is true then that is some serious bullshit. Even my horseshit bank doesn't do that.

I've been with Bank of America since the mid-90's (they were called SeaFirst up here), and I have only ever had one problem with them. I had an "ATM only" account, meaning I got a $3 surcharge every time I used a teller for a transaction I could complete at an ATM. One Friday, I took my paycheck to the bank. Now, I was planning a roadtrip, and it was my mid-month check, so I was completely tapped; I needed the whole balance of the check available immediately...not this "$100 until the check is processed" bullshit. So I go inside, fill out the slip, and take it up to the teller.

She tells me that there will be a surcharge, and I ask if I can have it waived, since I need the money right then, and the ATM would take until Monday.

"Oh no, sir," she says. "It's only 1pm, so that check will be deposited in full by 4.30pm."

After getting her repeated assurances that this was the case, I went outside and deposited it at the ATM. The next morning, on the road, my debit card is declined. I call to check my balance, and it's at -$200 or so. Turns out, the check didn't get processed after all. I had to call my folks and have them hurry down to the branch and throw a few hundred dollars into that account; I was goddamned lucky I have generous, supportive parents.

Anyhow, I went in on Monday, of course, and talked to the branch manager. After initially sounding like he thought it was my fucking fault, he waived all the charges. It was like pulling teeth, but it only took a few minutes.

The best part? My check didn't come through until Tuesday.

    Night.

oh god I got a bank story sorta.

well, I'll just make it really short.

Student loan was taking money out of my account back home unbeknownst to me. So suddenly my mom calls and is like "hey you got an overdraft and I call the phone banking thing to check my balance and sure enough I'm overdrawn and have been for weeks and oh, here's something cool, the bank charges $20 for every week you're overdrawn. Ha fucking ha bank. So Fram and I are calling the bank and student loan and trying to get this all sorted out. Fram did most of the calling because I get fucking irrationally pissed about shit and I fucking hate that "oh it was probably your fault" thing that people do.

So after a whole bunch of yelling, the bank put my money back and student loan actually deferred my loan instead of just fake deferring it like they did the first time.

I am thiking of switching over to BECU. Weaver? Dru? Any comments/advice?

I am currently with wells fargo and would like to not be with a bank that charges me for spending my own money (I have a small safety net in my savings, and I get charged a fee every time they pull from my savings should my checking be overdrawn).

I haven't used BECU so I'm not totally certain on the differences but the CU has worked well for me.

Here's copied from the website for the basic checking account.

    All include:
    new.gifFree Watermark logo duplicate checks
    new.gifFree domestic wire transfers
Free unlimited checkwriting (no per-check charges)
    Free ATM/debit card
    Free online banking
    Free online bill payment
    Free telephone banking
    No direct deposit requirement
    Optional overdraft protection¹
    Free ATM withdrawals²
    Federally insured

So anyone have US Bank, National City, or Bank One? These are what I have narrowed my choices down to when I switch banks.

I use National City, good online banking, and a debit card are all I need. Pay all my bill online, the bank cuts my rent check and mails it for me and I get my monthly student loan allowance through automatic transfer (because if i just kept the money in my account I would be so broke at the end of every semester).

don't go US Bank because if they give you a loan and lose a bunch of loan paperwork, you have to go yell at them for about two hours to make sure your credit doesn't go to shit

Just do your research on both. For instance, one factor that could be important to you is where Watermark and BECU have ATMs and whether Watermark only waives fees from their ATMs or from any credit union ATM. BECU has quite a few ATMs around, I don't recall ever seeing a Watermark ATM. Get specifics instead of just accepting the statement, "Free ATM transactions".

I use a local bank, and they've always been good to me. No fees for anything, overdraft protection from your savings account for free, all sorts of nice perks.

I also just started using a financial tracking program, because god damn I need to start saving money and watching my spending more. I have zero financial planning skills whatsoever right now, and I really, really need to develop some.

I chose my bank based on atm locations/branches in wichita. Turns out that's worked really well for me, one time they sent me a new visa check card just because I had a web hosting monthly withdrawl and they felt like that was high risk for fraud so they cut me a new one. Also since the headquarters are local if I ever do have problems I'm sure I know somebody who knows somebody whose dad is high up in the company and would take care of shit.

Jesus what is wrong with you people. Never bank at nationals, they have tiers of assrape they hand out in fees. If you don't have a local homegrown bank, go with a fucking credit union. If the building looks better than most mansions, its a good sign you should switch.

The only ATM fees are what another ATM charges you, but this is easily circumvented by just getting cash with your debit card when you go shopping.

We have like 5 different banks' world headquarters here in Cleveland, and National City is one of them. Also National City is kind of deceptive since I've never seen one anywhere on the west coast.
