And from the Howard County Sheriff's website:
Thanks to the citizens of Howard County, who agreed with the special advisory board and the Howard County Commission that a new jail was needed, a bond issue was passed in 2002. The new jail was built adjacent to its predecessor on Mulberry Street and features a modern security system; space to house female prisoners; a recreation room for the prisoners; and a sally port to provide a safer transfer of prisoners. The new facility also includes much-needed office space for the sheriffs and deputies that, up until this point, were located in the courthouse. When the new jail was completed, the old one, which had served Howard County 100 years, was closed. This took place during Sheriff Charlie Polson's time in office. Later, the jail was sold on Ebay and the buyer, a man from California, had it restored.

So, some rich techbro had it restored and then decided to not live there for whatever reason, would be my guess.

So it turns out they’re asking $351k too much for it

Huh. Guessing the owner of the house wanted the county to pay more for the property and held out, and the county called their bluff.

What is that, about 80 or so years of "well, we need more room - just add another bit"?

According to the listing, the house got renovated in 2005, after the new jail was built in 2002. None of this makes any normal sense that I can sort out.

If the price was right, I'd buy a house like that.

$1m is definitely not the right price.

$350k is still not the right price, for me anyways.

    $50k might be.

I dunno, from the NIMBY perspective my dad always had the take "hell yeah I'd get a house next to the jail, every criminal that can is going AWAY from there". And I feel like the person in the market for jail house Missouri doesn't think the cops there are a detriment like I do.

Hardest part for me is the resale, I'd want to at least be able to sell it again one day.

Abandoned - American Dream Mall 18:33

Among all of the victims of the 2009 global financial crisis, there is one property still struggling to find luck in our modern times. The once named Xanadu Mall (now called American Dream) had eaten through billions of dollars, sat abandoned for years and even today is not fully open. Did I mention it's been under construction outside of New York City for over 20 years? Let's take a look at the infamous and morbidly ambitious, American Dream Shopping & Entertainment Complex.

Abandoned - Revel Casino Resort 16:28

On the shores of the struggling Atlantic City sits a shinning, modern glass resort seemingly different to all the other old, tired looking casinos on the iconic boardwalk. Revel was the new development poised to reshape the gambling town and breath life back into the community. However things didn't go as planned. So today I'm looking a bit deeper into how a brand new, billion dollar resort failed so spectacularly and eventually sat abandoned for several years.

I just found out there's an architecture thread! That's neat! I basically took a sabbatical from the forum right when this thread started because I was starting grad school in architecture, and I've been doing all that and licensure and work for a while which kept me away.

But I'm back now, I'm a licensed architect in Virginia, and I'm exhausted because I'm wrapping up the construction documents on a small project I designed and did all the "project architecture" stuff on (this is my first one), so I'm going to need to collect myself before I dive deeper into that. After construction maybe I'll see about sharing some photos!

In the meantime, long live brutalism.

In the world of architecture limited by physics, one interesting project is the home of Antón García-Abril, lead designer of Ensamble Studio. You can see a bunch of images here. It has rather extreme looking cantilevers that feel magical, one of which is a long wading pool that occurs right off the master bedroom. The rest of the magic is that the structure is described by García-Abril as a helix with a 20 ton slab of granite poised at the very top acting as a counterweight.

He's a fascinating presenter and architect, I definitely recommend looking up more of his work. His house was also featured in part of the Spain episode on the Netflix show "The Worlds Most Extraordinary Homes."

Here's a short clip of the guy himself:

If you can, check out the Netflix episode. It is hard to get a feel for the space with images alone, and I thought that did a great job of presenting actual life in the home. It is such a beautiful and comfortable looking place, but it holds so well to the ideas of brutalism, it makes a fantastic argument that concrete does not always make a place cold and uninviting.

I'm also super jealous that one of the show's presenters got to take a swim in that long cantilevered pool.

It's so fucking brutalist, without going too hard on the "concrete, concrete everywhere" aesthetic some architects have in the past.

"You think concrete is brutalist? Check out my FUCKING HUGE PIECE OF GRANITE and weep, bitches."

Barcelona is massively expanding its Super-Islands concept where several city blocks are collected into (almost) car free areas and former crossings are turned into public spaces.

I love mirrors and even I might consider that a bit much for a regular bedroom

Now if this is the sort of house where you've got a regular bedroom elsewhere and that's just the orgy room, I reckon I'm a bit more interested
