So I chose Blood and Broken Bones difficulty (not the worst) and it seems very overwhelming in the early game, moving from encounter to encounter and quest to quest with no health recovery to fall back on.
Am I missing some kind of inn-room or does it become moderately easier to stock up on consumable health items (food and drink)? Or should I just start over on Normal, meditate to heal mode?

The inn that the main story quest takes you to sells food items
That's probably the only reliable way to stock up right now
Yeah I know the merchants sell food and drink but 42 crowns seems like highway robbery for a skein of water. I wish I could refill skins of water as easily as I could pick herbs.
I guess I was hoping for some reliable but limited health recovery in the harder settings ala a Souls game. Normal seems trivial but the step up is pretty dang punishing and unfair.

There's a perk called Sun and Stars that will regenerate your health by 10/second when out of combat during the day.

Sweet, good to know it gets better. I also figured out I could slay a few woodland animals for raw meat.

Was able to import my ancient Witcher 2 save. With a Q9650, GTX970, 6GB ram and an 8GB flash drive plugged in for readyboost, game runs super smooth on high settings. Not gonna push my luck with ultra though. It's pretty enough.
If anyone wasn't aware, the English translation of The Sword of Destiny, the second short story collection, is out today
The short stories are a great way to figure out if you'd like to delve into the novels

I just now realized that weapons and armor have durability ratings and need repairs now god damn it

Oh you've got to be joking

Nope.
It's totally a thing
And the barman says, "Why the long face?"
And Geralt says, "Because this is a dark world full of difficult choices and I'm conflicted as to whether my actions will make anything better."
Having to find a fire to meditate is annoying.
Gwent just seems like basically a nothing game?
Its like an elaborate version of "there are thirty things, take 1-3, the person who gets the last one loses"
Just not much to it
Along with something that removes encumberance. Dumbest game mechanic ever made.

because if thats it then I'm just gonna go back to normal
it's basically homework
Because it makes you feel invested in what you're doing
in GTA5 the heist setup stuff, removed from "i am doing this to make the heist possible", is basically the most boring thing in the world
but it makes you feel like youre actually doing something important
its a really cool thing that more games should do

Remember that this is just the starting area
Hitching posts for your horse
I don't like just leaving him in the middle of the road to wander off
Well we know the game was delayed a couple of times because it needed more polish

oh god it hurts
Geralt has apparently had numerous horses, all of whom he's named Roach (so he doesn't get attached)
