Does anyone know any catchy little colloquialisms that help identify the difference between effect and affect?
My colleague can never seem to comprehend the difference and it's driving me insane trying to explain it over and over in a way that sticks for them.
Try to substitute another simple verb for the word, like eat. If the sentence still make sense, then you want affect; otherwise it should probably be effect. Just make sure you're using proper tense when you do this (affected/affecting::eaten/eating). For example:
Puppy pictures are so cute, they really affect my productivity | Puppy pictures are so cute, they really eat my productivity
vs
The effect that puppy pictures have on my productivity is a serious problem | The eat that puppy pictures have on my productivity is a serious problem
Half the people on this tour were not paying any fucking attention
20 minutes after leaving the Dr King Memorial I had two families interrupting my tour asking me when we were getting off at said memorial. Informing them we just left it prompted them insisting I never mentioned it and giving a sad tale about how their entire vacation and their kids depended on this and they would not have taken the tour if they could not see it. Every other sentence insisting I did not mention it
I do tours like this every other night, so I honestly could not remember if I did mention that memorial or not since it's hard to see from the tour route and you are given the option to leave my narrated section to check it out for yourself. By the end of their rant I was convinced I had made a terrible mistake
next stop I ask my driver and a few guests if I did mention the Dr King memorial. The guests said absolutely they went there themselves, driver started to curse up a storm saying half these people were not paying any attention and immediately pointed out which family was giving me trouble. When I described the situation to her she insisted this was gaslighting and they needed to be kicked off the tour. I decided on a diplomatic response instead, and they didn't give me much trouble the rest of the night
At least there was a very clear rainbow behind the Washington Monument next to a vivid sunset, so there was a pretty part of the night

If bored then post unless sass then post retort however avoid getting banned.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

I am an attorney, and affect/effect minors so little to me because the difference isn't actually significant enough to change the meaning of the discussion.

My dad ran into one of my friends from high school at a carpet store the other day, and once my dad, I guess, reintroduced himself to him, he goes, "we used to get into a lot of political fights back in high school but it's been a long time and you should let him know that I agree with him now," which would feel better if my political views hadn't basically done a 180 degree shift since high school

If only the solicitors in our department were so forgiving.
I run a meetup, which I put tons of effort and has been "succesful" (in the way that people have met and become friends/couples, we are actively doing bunch of different stuff). Meetup fees increased so for the first time I sent out an email asking for donations if people felt inclined.
6 people donated.
Not even the money issue that bothers me, but just leaves me feeling really unappreciated.

I don't know, I'm pretty impressed that a full six people donated. How many people go to this?

Most meetups have 20-40 people attendance. We probably have between 100 to 200 active regular members.
I walked over to Sweetielicious (National Award winning bakery that's less than a block away) for quiche and there was a class of kids out front on a field trip (probably around 5yrs old?). On the way back to my house they were kinda milling around and I heard one of the kids say "oh look at him. You would NOT want to mess with him"

I missed the part where you said you walked. That sucks, man.
I got up at 7 AM this morning, showered, and went to my first job, worked for three hours
Then I went to my second job, where I worked for 5.5 hours
Then I went to the math lab for two hours
And I have a math test in a half-hour
But today looking at it just makes me go holy fuck what am I even doing
God damn people it's still May.

A list of things, should you be of the gifting persuasion

Use synonyms.
Affect:
1. influence, sway; modify, alter. 2. touch, stir.
Effect
outcome, issue, refer to something produced by an action or a cause, consequence
Like, the effect of of this drug is heavy.
Or that move affected me down to the soul.
Outcome vs Influence.
Yeah I've explained the outcome vs influence side of things to them, which they actually understand at the time.
It's more the association and retention of which word is which that's the problem.
I'm not usually one to get impatient about correcting grammar and spelling, but this person is a paralegal and oh my gosh you should know this arrrgh
