X-COM: [Phalla]nemy Unknown: Day 8 - X-COM Victory!

xcomcover530.jpg

Mysterious objects have been sighted flying over all of the world's landmasses. People and livestock have disappeared, only to reappear days later with severely limited and extremely bizarre recollections of what had happened to them. This activity is only increasing and the world's governments have determined it is the beginnings of an alien invasion.

They have banded together to form X-COM, the Extraterrestrial Combat Unit to fight back. Will humanity be enslaved or will we remain free?

What is this?

This is a Phalla, Penny Arcade's version of the game mafia. In this game, you will be playing as members of X-COM or the alien invaders (they have cheesy human disguises, just go with me here) out to destroy them. It is a game for 40-50 players, preferably toward the high end of that number.

Standard Rules

Hey vote, before I yell at you about it. Also post. But mostly vote. There will be further reasons for this in the future. Standard illegal stuff applies, don't talk to the dead, etc etc etc. You get one ghost post.

The Vote

Do it in red It kills someone. Ties kill all tied players and whoever tied the vote. Don't tie the vote.

Communication
I DO need links to all proboards you may or may not create for this game.

I DO NOT need to be included in all other communication.

Respond to your role PM for any orders you have to send.

Battle Game!

This is a battle game. Everyone can shoot people. You can also do other stuff!

Special Rules
X-COM

This game will feature the aliens who are all unique and three classes of player roles. These will be randomized. They are:
  • Scientists - Each Scientist can each day select one of: research a scientific project, fire a pistol they've been given by X-COM, or hunker down to defend themselves.
  • Engineers - Each Engineer can each day select one of: manufacture an item, fire a pistol they've been given by X-COM, or hunker down to defend themselves
  • Soldiers - All soldiers will start as rookies. Each time a soldier kills any player (X-COM is a free fire zone) and survives, they will receive a promotion. On the first promotion each soldier will specialize in one of four things:
  • Sniper - Single target damage from a distance
  • Assault - Close range murder machine
  • Heavy - Features explosives
  • Support - Buffs and heals
Further promotions will unlock special abilities (with a choice). The specifics of which you will see as you unlock them. Each class has seven levels to go through.

Commander
Each day, the players will elect a Supreme Commander in cyan. The following day this Commander will assign all newly manufactured items to players as he or she sees fit, in a PM sent to me. Additionally, they will have 5 research and 5 manufacturing points to spend. This will be done publicly in the thread. Day one's commander will be RNG'd. The Commander MUST use the research and manufacturing points, so those will happen even if you elect an alien to be Supreme Commander.

Research
X-COM must develop new weapons and technologies in order to defeat the aliens. Each scientist will contribute 1 research to a project of his or her choice, in addition to the Supreme Commander's research points. Each technology will have a cost associated with it. At the start of the game, the following projects will be available:

Laser Weapons - 8 points
Alien Biology - 4 points
Alien Technology - 4 points

If X-COM devotes more science than is necessary to a project (for example, 6 points to Alien Biology), the extra points will carry on to a future project in that tree, if one exists). If X-COM contributes less science than is necessary for a project, that progress will still count. As X-COM kills aliens, more research will be unlocked!

Manufacturing
X-COM must build new weapons and replenish their existing stocks. Each engineer will contribute 1 manufacturing to a project of his or her choice. Again, overflow counts, but only towards another copy of the item in question. The following items are available at the beginning of the game:

Medikit - 5 points
Grenades - 2 points

ALL ALIENS CAN USE ALL ITEMS so be careful who you assign them to!

Soldiers
Each soldier begins the game with an Assault Rifle, a Pistol, and a Grenade. There is no ammo restriction so fire away. Soldiers will receive a promotion after each day they end with at least one kill, unlocking abilities as they do so. They will also gain two hit points for each promotion they receive.

Aliens
There are aliens, kill them.

TARGETING (READ THIS)
This is the major experimental mechanic of the game. Which is why it's all big and colorful and in all caps.

I wanted to do line of sight in this game. But I didn't want to make a separate battlescape. So this is what I came up with.

1) To use any ability that targets another player, you MUST make a vote post. Without a vote post, your weapon will not fire, your medikit will not heal, your grenade will not explode. This includes the aliens, so no day one vote skipping mafias.
2) You may only target people based on the order they have cast a vote (they have to be in range). Range will vary by weapon/character, but the standard is within 10. All orders which are valid when they are sent remain valid. If you have voted multiple times in a day, INCLUDE A LINK in the PM you send me, please.
3) An example:

The following people have voted in the following order:

1. enlightenedbum
2. Ardor
3. MrBlarney
4. jdarksun
5. Gizzy
6. Ardor
7. Burnage
8. Bedlam
9. Langly
10. ObiFett
11. lonelyahava
12. ecco
13. ZH
14. Wildcat
15. Wildcat
16. MrTLicious

If my weapon/character had standard range, I could only shoot the second through eleventh people on this list. Ardor could shoot anybody, but would have to specify his second vote in order to shoot ZH, Wildcat, or MrT. This should be relatively easy to see from simply reading the thread, but if you're maintaining an accurate vote count, it will be even easier.

Reaction Shots

Instead of choosing to take another action, every player may instead choose to take a Reaction Shot. If they do so, they will shoot the first player to attempt to shoot them, at a penalty of 1 damage. "First player" is determined by when the PM is sent in.

Explosives

Explosives (Rockets, Grenades, etc) deal damage to the target and a number of players "adjacent" to that target. That is to say, if a grenade was targeted at Langly in the above list, it would deal damage to Langly as well as Bedlam and ObiFett. If a player appears twice in the range of a grenade, the second time will be ignored. For example, if WIldcat were targeted, regardless of which post was targeted, it would hit Wildcat, ZH, and MrT.

ebum, I have concerns about this system
Understandable! It's kind of nuts. And an experiment. Here are a couple of the obvious ones:
1) Don't try to game the system by spamming votes in order to get between yourself and someone else. Or by changing your vote on a regularly scheduled basis to get coverage on everyone. You can change your vote as you would normally, but try to embrace the idea of the mechanic. I can't really enforce this I will just frown at you VERY SEVERELY from my house.

2) Time zones/availability. Some people can only come read the thread and post when it's convenient to them and maybe they won't be able to hit the target they really want. I have two responses to this. First, the vote can still be used as it always has. You can kill anyone with it. Second, as players are killed, you will be able to hit those people.

3) That's a lot of information! It sure is. My brain may explode. Just warning you.

Ask for further...

Clarifications in (dark) orange.

All votes count for targeting purposes, even retracted ones.

You can only have one item at a time. You can replace an item you have with a new item you receive.
You may give items to other players. Some items can best be used by soldiers, for example.

Order: Vote -> science/engineering -> non-combat skills (healing, other things) -> reaction shots -> shots

Vote Close

Is at midnight Eastern. Stuff timestamped at 11:59 counts, after that it does not.

Victory

All victories are standard. X-COM wins if all aliens are eliminated. The Aliens win if they become a majority.

That's X-COM, Baby
Because there is a lot of information which could potentially result in aliens being exposed, they are comparatively powerful at the start of the game. But X-COM can unlock correspondingly large levels of power as the game progresses and I think the additional information from the targeting system should give a clever village the chance to find mafia. I make no promises that it IS balanced, but I did try to make it so.
