So I'm finally getting around to looking for a new phone (currently on a hand-me-down Moto 2) and, uh, when did headphone jacks and stereo speakers go out of style? Good audio quality (both from speakers and headphones), solid battery life, and a mid-range price is pretty much what I want and I'm not sure what on the current market checks those boxes.

Currently looking at like, the OneNote 5 and the S7 (maybe Edge?). Any opinions, or has everyone already left those in the dust?

The LG V30 and Pixel 2 XL almost certainly share the exact same physical panel. However they are calibrated differently so that's why the V30 screen looks different (and actually worse) than the Pixel 2 XL.

Here's the thing on the burnin. It is actually way too early to know if the issues are burn in or retention. Retention goes away, burn in does not. We wont' really know for a couple months if the burn in issue is that significant. And to be clear, Every. Single. OLED. Panel. will eventually get burn in. The issue is that we are now not sure if the Pixel 2 XL is exhibiting signs of it mere days after getting into people's hands, compared to the usual situation where it can take a year to a year and a half before it starts to become noticeable.

The really big red flag for me was that Google said in a statement that they've tested these panels, and that they're no different than others. That is demonstrably false, because even if this issue is retention, not burn in, other phones with OLED panels are not showing this after a few days of use, so these panels cannot be the same.

Google also, in the same statement, announced that they are extending the warranty on all Pixel 2 and 2 XL's to 2 years, from 1 year. Now, glass half full is that they're doing this to try to reassure customers that "no, this is fine, and we're backing it up by extending the warranty" Glass half empty is that they're extending it because "holy crap these things are showing burn in already? we're screwed" I think it's more half empty than half full here.

The blue shift on the screen is also something that happens based off calibration. I've seen a 2 XL in person, and for me personally, I know it would bother me. Google tries to say that it is a more accurate to real life calibration, but personally, when I look at a white sheet of paper, it does not have a blue tint. When I looked at a white image on the Pixel 2 XL, it had a blue tint. I'm not sure how google can say that it's more accurate. The iPhone, as an example, also has a "more accurate" calibration, and it doesn't have that kind of blue shift at all. Google can fix some of this in software, but some of this is hardware, so who knows how much any software fix will actually help.

Either way, there is a significant issue with the Pxiel 2 XL. Either the panel is bad, or google didn't calibrate it well, or both. But something is up, and it's not insignificant.

I'm not saying it's the best phone or screen by any measure. For me, I haven't noticed anything wrong with the screen and I suspect had I totally not followed the coverage I wouldn't have even been aware that there is a problem with the device.

This will be different for everyone and I'm sure there are people in the "I am paying $x it better be perfect even if I don't realize it isn't perfect" camp.

For me, the screen is neither an upside or a downside to buying the phone. That means I get to enjoy the best camera and software experience that is available on an Android device and that's more than good enough for me.

For me, after watching videos on the device running the one baffling thing on the Pixel 2 is entirely software based but having the DCI P3 colour gamut available but only if individual apps allow it is really strange. Enough that things like photo editing on the phone is nearly impossible to get right.

Between the lack of wireless charging (yes, a big deal for me, I'm in and out a lot getting kids everywhere every day, and can't be assed to be dicking with plugging in a cable constantly) and the apparently garbage screen, the Pixel 2XL appears to be a no-go for me.

    Which is a big bummer.

My Nexus 6 is 3yrs old now and boy does it feel its age. I was hoping to upgrade soon, but large "phablet" or whatever sized phones are not the thing they used to be. From what I can tell, the current XL2 alternatives are basically the Note 8 or the LG V30. I despise the Samsung brand of Android, and really don't care for the current gens curved sides, so it kind of just leaves the V30, from what I can tell.

Fortunately, feature wise, the V30 seems to fit the bill. It looks mostly stock Android (though I just saw one review that said otherwise, but while they were using it, I couldn't see really what they were talking about), has wireless charging, still has a headphone jack (which I can go either way on at this point, honestly, but that is a different discussion), good screen, current hardware (I guess it could have more ram, but several reviews mentioned that in practice it has no real difference between other phones with 6gb), and a stock-ish looking UI, or at least stock enough.

I really wish the Pixel 2 XL wasn't such a disappointment. Maybe if they fix the damn screen I could deal with no wireless charging since it is USB-C. Plus I want to keep Google fi, and it is still just google devices (and moto x4, which...:rotate: ).

    Frustrating.

Regardless; has anyone here picked up a V30? I'm curious about its version of Android and how stock it feels. Also, has anyone seen one in the wild at stores? I don't particularly like going into carrier specific stores, but if any are showcasing a working model, I'd be willing to deal with the hassle. Best Buy only has Samsung and Apple on the floor now, at least my local one. Walmart doesn't have anything recent. I'd like to get it in my hands to see what I think, though I'd like to do the same with a Pixel 2 XL, and am surprised Best Buy didn't have them (as they did for the Pixel). I know the screen has gotten a ton of complaints and issues, but other aspects of the device I'd like to see firsthand, just in case Google actually does something about the screens instead of just shrugging.

EDIT: Also does anyone know what carriers might have the basic Pixel 2 on display? I might be able to handle going to a smaller phone (though I am somewhat doubtful), and I'd like to at least mess with it.

From what I've read, modern TouchWiz is closer to stock Android than LG's skin, FWIW.

  • wunderbarwunderbar What Have I Done? Registered User regular
if you're that concerned with the launcher looking like the Pixel Launcher (which is different than "stock" Android), there are plenty of 3rd party launchers that you can run that will give you almost the exact look and feel to the Google Pixel Launcher.

If you grab another launcher the only other place where you see the differences in the UI is in the settings panels, those are usually different. And honeslty, after using the GS8+ for a few months, isn't that big of a deal. Things are in different places, some better than Google's, some worse.

Then it comes down to updates. Personally, I wouldn't trust LG's track record with updating. yea, the V30 will almost certainly get Android 8. But we have no idea if it'll get Android 9, the 2018 release. the OEM's I'd trust to get Android 9 on their Flagships at this point are Samsung, and 90% Motorola. Moto's just a little iffy because Lenovo does weird things sometimes, but it'll probably get it.

I have not done the research myself, but you may also find good candidates in the Moto G5/G5S and the Moto X4. I think it's considered "mid-range" price, but on the higher end of that range, but you could also check the HTC U11.

The Oneplus 5 is basically unbuyable now with it's replacement coming in the next few weeks. The Nokia 8, Asus Zenphone 4 Pro and Zenphone 4 (both newly announced and should be available soon), The Essential Phone, and few others are all in the $500-600 range and pretty much comparable to one another. The Essential Phone is the most different of the bunch, and for me the most interesting one. However, it's lacking things like a selection of cases, wireless charging, and a headphone jack make it a tough sell compared to everything else. The HTC U11 looks to be another one to add to my list.

I posted a few pages back about poor battery life on my Pixel XL and today it's really taken a dive for the worse and I'm not sure what to do about it. Done the usual close all running apps, I don't have facebook installed as I don't even have an account (but I do have and use messenger). I've tried a standard restart and I guess I can look at doing a full reset if I must but I'd really rather not have to start from scratch, I don't install many apps and haven't put anything new in for a while now yet today by the time I reached work it had dropped a full 30% from full with next to no usage.

What is up with my google play services? It's not doing anything and I haven't even been doing any updates this morning (that I'm aware of)

Google Play services is doing a lot of things all the time on any android phone with the Play store. Just because it isn't an "app" doesn't mean it isn't running a lot of background processes. Play Services is actually the vessel in which your phone actually commuicates with Google, so it's a pretty integral piece.

That being said, that usage does look a bit high for it. It's possible that it got an update push that caused it to need to synchronize a bunch of stuff. It's hard to troubleshoot play services battery usage because it literally does nearly everything.

Not sure if it matters during your commute, but I've experienced my 5X chew through battery overnight because it lost wifi connectivity and kept trying to reconnect. Have you tried shutting off wifi when you leave the house or when you get home?

Also, considering 8.0 just dropped and 8.1 is on the horizon, it's likely that Play Services is doing some background work regarding which apps you have that need updates and/or are waiting for wifi/idle time to do so.

Both are shots in the dark, but both are experiences I've dealt with in the recent past.

The real question is how many games can the SD835 actually render over 60fps? It will probably be more useful in the OS honestly.

  • wunderbarwunderbar What Have I Done? Registered User regular
The SD835 is pretty powerful, actually. Running unconstrained it's good enough to power Windows 10 with no issues. However, in a phone form factor thermal limitations are an issue. Phones are designed to give a quick big burst of processing, but then generally have to throttle/scale that down a bit because of heat concerns, as well as battery. Even the iPhone has this issue.

Now, Razer claims they have a better/newer heat pipe setup for better dissipation and thermal management, so we'll see. It might be better than some other phones, but I'm skeptical.

so kind of out of left field, HTC just announced two new phones that are actually really compelling.

first off, the midrange U11 Life, which is basically a cost reduced U11, at $350. For the price is looks really good, except for the lack of a headphone jack. https://www.theverge.com/2017/11/2/16593862/htc-u11-life-smartphone-hands-on-first-look

Then, the U11 Plus, which appears to be europe only. HTC basically made an 18:9 version of the U11 with a bigger battery and just generally slightly higher end all around.
    https://www.theverge.com/2017/11/2/16589218/htc-u11-plus-announced-specs-release-date-price-android-oreo

I really like the U11 Life. That has the potential to be nearly the defacto midrange phone recommendation, as long as the headphone jack isn't a deal breaker.

The bigger question I have is about the software. Razer is promising some cool stuff to manage battery usage in gaming, and it might affect overhead in a lot of cool ways. I'm interested to see if any of that fills its promises and if other handset makes pick up on it.

Or anything that claims to vastly improve battery life/performance in Android that isn't written by google. Google has enough trouble getting devs to play nice when they literally build it into the base OS, nevermind what a random 3rd party dev with a sales ceiling that's probably sub 250k units can accomplish.

Not saying it'll be a bad phone, but it definitely won't be the magic beans and unicorn meat that Razer is going to claim.

So, the Razer phone is pretty impressive. The fit and finish is excellent, which isn't surprising because of the team they acquired to build it. Loading it from the factory with Nova Launcher Prime is a pretty cool move, and the speakers sound incredible. Better than any phone I've ever heard, easily.

The headphone jack thing kills me (my car doesn't have BT). I've also gotten used to the extra tall aspect ratio of my S8+, so going back to 16x9 feels a little weird. Mainly the phone just feels huuuuuge. Not convinced $699 is the right price for it, but I'm less skeptical than I was initially. The whole thing is way more restrained than I would have thought and it feels like this is a product they really care about.

If nothing else, it's a really great alternative to OnePlus in the pure-ish unlocked arena.

Sorry, it's not my personal phone, but it feels very similar to the Nexus 6P in terms of size.

    That actually helps a lot.

When I bought my 5X over the 6P it was because I made cardboard cutouts the size of both phones to see how they'd fit in my pockets. The 6P didn't fit or not comfortably enough. At work, my phone must always be on my pocket (as a personal choice) because I had my phone stolen off of my desk a few years ago. If a phone doesn't fit comfortably in my pocket while sitting down then it's a no go for me. The Razer phone being basically the same size as a 6P tells me all I need to know.

Tested.com put up a quick look at the Razer Phone and had an Essential Phone next to it for comparison. The Razer is much larger the the Essential Phone.

That said, I may need to do the same thing again because most phones now seem to be in the 150-155mm range and that's borderline too big for me. The Essential Phone is unusually small for it's screen size, smaller than the 5X by a good margin, so I may just have to deal with it.
