Beatmania IIDX 16 EMPRESS location testing | Gold CS released

edited July 2008 in Games and Technology
IIDX 16, aka EMPRESS, is now location testing.

Doesn't seem to be a whole lot of new songs, but the interface and design is... unique, if nothing else.

All info and imagery comes from Bemanistyle.com, and their assorted sources.

Distorted easily has the best overall songlist out of the whole series. I cannot wait.

...even though I can only do up to Hyper 8.

Also surprise! No V! But the revivals aren't great.

I wish it didnt cost a thousand dollars (more like over $100 but still) to softmod my PS2 and buy this game with the controller.

Bloody Tears IIDX Edition is fucking amazing. If youtube wasnt down right now I'd link to a video.

The Beatmania US bundles are only $30 now. Getting a controller is almost too easy thanks to how badly that game sold. Buy that, sell the game, get far superior import versions, profit.

And no, not that Mr.T... at least I very much doubt it.
He's a Konami artist, so no. I forget his real name.

I paid full price for mine. :x It was my first Beatmania game, so I guess that makes it okay.

I made up for it a few months later by getting 10th Style, and I've never looked back.

Where on earth was it $10 at? I've been meaning to get a second to pick up 14k.

    Got it at KayBee Toys.

Also, just keep on trying and fail until you pass. That's how I play. Also playing Random on easier songs (like some 6's) would help a lot.

I bought a second controller the other day to do just that.

I'm still mad that I didn't take advantage of that PlayAsia sale when I did... those were some cheap IIDX games.

Anyway, a modded PS2 is first on my list. I need to save money for that, and then I can start collecting.

I've heard that 8th Style through the present releases are all pretty solid, but should I narrow it down some?

I'd say look at the songlists of the various versions(Bemanistyle has them all listed in the database), and find the ones that has the most songs you like.

For me, that was 10th. Love Is Eternity, Quasar, Under The Sky, Sparker, Rottel Da Mercury, Sometime... there's a few dozen songs in that mix that're great.

I was thinking about getting HappySky from the PlayAsia sale, but it only has a few songs I like.

    RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE.

I wanted to make a thread about beatmania after finding the US version in a Supertarget for $25 and spending the last few weeks playing the hell out of it. But I'm not very good at making OPs and I am interested in importing another beatmania game.

So I figured this would be the thread to resurrect. Now, what do I need to get Japanese games running on my slimline?

You want to order something called a Swap Magic. I forget where I got it at, but it's basically three little pieces of plastic that sell for around $9. It tricks the PS2 into thinking it's still closed when you open it to swap out the boot disk(which lets it read imports) for the import disc.

You'll probably need the disc also, so I think it'd run you around $30 total.

I'd suggest 10th style offhand for the best songs, but just be warned, the difficulty curve of the import versions is nasty.

And before someone asks, no, I have no idea what Detroit Techno is.

I sure wish I didn't suck at this game. I love rhythm games but for some reason IIDX is the one that never clicked. I keep trying to figure out how to pass anything beyond a basic song but I can't manage to do a thing. It sucks, but even with all that I will end up (most likely) getting this game because even though I can't pass a thing there is something so cool about them that I need to play more.

Well, which games have you played? I started on 6th style which had beginner mode and then the Light-7 started at difficulty 3 out of 7*, so it was pretty tough. BUT, it had a secret weapon which was on my side - drill mode! It gives you short snippets of songs with specific patterns that would normally give you trouble when they came up in the middle of playing. For each pattern, there's 3 difficulties which mix up the keys or double the amount of notes. If you play enough of that like I did, the game will pretty much be 'drill'ed into your head. The first set of drills has like, 44 of them. Then there's another with nearly 100. There's an additional set, but it's mostly a gimmick. So that's over 400 drills total to get you used to the game!

If you want something slightly easier, 5th style also has a drill mode. I don't think there's as many drills though. Or if there's a beginner mode. But the Light 7 songs do start out at 1s and such.

Another effective strategy is to just keep playing until it clicks. You really need a 'pad presence' like in DDR - you have to know where the buttons are instinctively. After that, if you can read the notes, you're golden. Try speeding the songs up to see if that helps.

If drill mode still isn't enough, take a song you're having difficulty with and put it in Training Mode. This isn't really too effective, but you can play the entire song slowed down with one of 5 speed settings. So if you play it on the slowest and gradually speed it up, maybe something will sink in.

I can do some 10s now, by the way.

The Spring Rain remix by DJ Yoshitaka is awesome, my favourite song from Distorted :^:

I'm so tempted to buy it (could use the controller for DJMAX as well), but then I'd have to mod my PS2... shame they can't release the series intact in the US. :|
Wait what am I talking about, I'd still be fucked :P

I am currently working on progressing from 3s to 4s on the US beatmania game... so perhaps I should put off importing the game for a little bit.

The purple flashing interface is just hell for my eyes. The bgm doesn't help either.

I've found the import versions to be just better looking.

That, and the music is like five times better.

Mostly in terms of songlist, but the system music is usually great also.

US' is good; the interface, not so much.

I played BMUS until I got to the turning point, which was Love is Dreaminess. I literally tried 225 timeson that song and I did not beat it once, and then I got 10th style and played for a week on that and bam, I cleared Love is Dreaminess L7. Importing helps if you want to get better at this game. The songlists to each game is enourmous too, which are 75-90 depending on style.

Yeah, I'm pretty much at an impasse here with some of the 4s and most 5s giving me difficulty. The stuff that is getting me stuck are the very close together notes that are right next to each other- I'm just not getting my fingers dancing back and forth there fast enough. Fast sequences of changing simultanious key-strokes are kind of hard too, but I find them easier than single-notes, oddly.

(My least favorite song has to be Snow... and while I enjoy the actual song for era(nostal mix), but the beat pattern can suck a dick. I'm not exactly pleased to see it's in DistorteD.)

Buy another copy. It's $35 on Konami's website, and I really doubt you're gonna be able to import a pad for less than that.

Last I checked, BM US was $25 in stores. Might even be cheaper now.

If it goes to $20 or less and I find one, that's when I start learning 14k.

Yeah, but there aren't any actual physical copies in the stores around here anymore.

And I wanted to pick up a second controller, too.

Rise from your DJ booths, or something. IIDX16 is on the way, and Gold CS is out, so I updated the OP with some assorted info, and details & songs from one very pink upgrade.

    829.png

    337.jpg

IIDX 16, aka EMPRESS, is now location testing.

There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of new songs, but the interface and design is... unique, if nothing else.

All info and imagery comes from Bemanistyle.com, and their assorted sources.
