Preparing to bring my tiny collection to PAX and...

I'm going into my 3rd year of Pinny Arcade trading and have been pretty much a quiet lurker until now (hi everybody). I did much better at Prime last year with growing what I have but now I'm to a point where moving things en masse is a little more difficult so I'm hoping for some advice.

1. I guess I'm not a true collector because I don't keep the pin cards. I wear them regularly on my lanyards at work and have them pinned to ribbons that hang on my desk at home when they're not on my neck so I can see them all. Transporting them last year was a little problematic (I pinned them to a hotel wash cloth for the staff trading event, that was... interesting... because my lanyard was way too heavy) so now I've decided I'd like to pin them to my canvas book bag to tote around with me. For people who've had experience with the locking pin backs how hard or easy are they to take on and off? I want something that will be secure (the rubber ones just haven't proven to be that for me, I almost lost my Granok and Star multiple times, and I'd be crushed if I lost my Colonial Kemper or Anubis) but that I'll be able to take off fairly quickly, for the timed trading on Sunday. For anyone I might meet and trade with, don't worry, I'll be keeping the genuine rubber ones with me to hand over.

2. Speaking of locking pin backs, for those people who use them, which do you prefer, http://tinyurl.com/q98lqqt or http://tinyurl.com/p4znpe4 ?

3. Is the "ALL" list on the Pinny Arcade site really complete? It seems short to me for some reason. I keep looking at mine and then going back to look and yep, they're there, but I still feel like it doesn't look complete to me for some reason. Is there a .pdf version or something that I can print out to cross off as I get the ones I want?

4. Speaking of the list, I'm a little confused by some of them. Racoon Monster and Octo Face, for example. Right now, they list "The Behemoth Booth" as the place to get them, but they don't show up on the PinQuest list for Prime. Same for the Bastion pin and Baron Blade (which I'd really, really like).

5. Lastly, anything that says 2014 or earlier is gone for good, right? I somehow missed out on getting Wilson last year from Klei, so the only way to get it is to trade for it, correct?

I'm certain some of this has been covered before, but I did do due diligence and search, but I may not have been using the right keywords.

Thanks in advance for any and all help. I can't quite contain myself with under two weeks to go! For the record, I hate the countdown tweets during PAX, telling me how close it is to being over. It's like a coffin nail in my soul.

    1. Most collectors don't keep the backs.
    3. The all pin list on the site isn't up to date. It doesn't yet have the Prime 2015 pins (and some others such as DSB Merch).
    4. Raccoon Monster and Octo Face are from PAX in a previous year. The site indicates where you could get them when they were available (which is downright confusing).
    5. Pretty much, but there is a decent community of traders here and I'm sure someone will be able to hook you up.

Your intuition is correct, It is not really complete: There are 241 pins that you could own at this point in time, but only 221 shown on the official pinny arcade site.

I suggest heading on over to the pinnypals site for all your pinfo needs. The list there is actively maintained better than the official PA one, and if you register quick for an account you can track your collection against the truly full set.

    1. Not everyone keeps the card backs. With alot of trades I don't give any.
    2. I would use the 1st one you linked. Screwing locking pin doesn't work well.
    3. Use the pinny pal app or use pinnypals.com
    4. They wouldn't because they are from different paxes. You can still find them at the booth most likely.
    5. You can still find people to trade with. I'm welcome with some trades. I love meeting new people. Also come to the pin dinner and meet the gag.

It's good to see new faces. I can't wait to meet you.

There's not too many of us that care about the card backs. I don't differentiate who is a true collector based on card backs. The pinsanity affects us all.

That being said, I will favor a trade that includes the card back.

Exactly what sort of pin dinner are you looking to host @darkinfero ?

I use the rubber backs but create a new hole in it when I stick it on the lanyard.

I think I'm too late to sign up for the dinner? If it's Thursday night, my roommate and I are driving in pretty early, so I'd we'd love to come if there's still space.

@darkinferno: The first one I linked was the screwing pinbacks, I think, with the allen wrench. I went with the others, as you suggested. Now, here's hoping they arrive in time or it's washcloth city again for me.

Come to the dinner! The sign up was to make sure we'd hit a high enough number to warrant getting the room.

    1) I personally keep as many of the cards as I can, though last year, having them on my lanyards did make them both conspicuous and a bit harder to manage. This year, i'm going to just keep my backless trade fodder on the lanyard and the backed pins either in my Magic bag or Pin bag, if it shows up in time. I'm also having as many of the specific artists sign the cards as I can. Last year, I had Mike and Jerry sign most of the sets that I had, and this year i'm going to try to get more.

There's two schools of thought when it comes to signed copies of cards where I work (Wizards). Some think it ruins the card, some think it adds value. Since the pin card backs seem to be of limited appeal here, I feel having them signed (as opposed to the pins themselves) lets me customize my collection without marring what really matters.

Sorry for the total tangent, and welcome to the club!

    2) I use the type from the second link. I think that's the specific vendor i bought mine from too.

3-4) addressed well enough by previous posters.

    5) Pins previously produced with that year on them will not be made again, though some may have multiple editions. The truly insane completist tries to get one of each edition. As for Klei specifically, I happen to have an extra. I'm sure something can be worked out.

I'm a big fan of loading up the big four-pin cards with ten or twelve pins for transportation purposes. For me, that's the only reason to keep the card backs.

The only pins that I keep with the backs are sets of 4 (I keep them sealed unless I need to trade them or something), 2013 pins that were sealed in plastic, and ones that have unique art (Triple Town Bear, Project Spark, LEs).

Yes! I do this mostly for staff sets, so I know who I don't have to hound down anymore. I also loaded up a full card with Castle Guys... so yay for that.

I keep the card backs for packaging pins, since many of my trades are long long distance (curse this upside down country). Also in terms of the pin backs, the individual ones (second picture) are better, I bought a bunch of the locking ones with the allen key from Disneyland just before East last year and nearly lost a few pins off my jacket as the backs don't seal that well.

I'm a big autograph person so I'm surprised I never thought of having my cards signed last year at the big trade event. Given I have no backs anymore, I think my mental window for keeping them has closed. I guess I'll meet everyone at the dinner tomorrow - 6pm, right, at the Daily Grill? Is there a specific group we should be asking for? And, my pinbacks arrived today so tonight... well, tonight is for sleeping, tomorrow in the hotel is for rebacking.
