In aa4 Phoenix is a weird hobo and ema is a basic detective who for one reason or another failed to become a forensic scientist and has become jaded and disillusioned
I honestly think it's nice to have character twists instead of "Oh I'm gonna be X" and wow seven years later they're X! Life doesn't work that way, and I think it also helped distinguish Ema from Mia. It would be nice, however, if Ema found some satisfaction in her job/life in 6.

I was a little annoyed that it was actually just a front for his highly convoluted revenge-plot against Kristoph.

Isn't most anime adaptive
The main issue here is the clearly abysmal budget and the massive rush through the trials
But then he gets right back to being awkward flustery Phoenix when lawyering, which is super weird. Leave that part for Apollo!
