Thomas the [chat] engine

The Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry (better known as the Reverend W. Awdry) had a problem. His son Christopher had a bout of the measles, and was feeling very ill. To distract him, Awdry began telling his son stories of anthropomorphic steam engines on the island of Sodor, a land free of modern innovations which was stuck in a simpler time, which Awdry greatly preferred to the hustle and bustle of the modern world. These stories became the famous Railway Series, and ultimately lead to the sensation that is Thomas and Friends.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyiQeQKfvGs

Although Thomas was not introduced until the first story in book 2 of the Railway series, he fast became the central character (displacing the older Edward who featured most prominently until that point). There are countless engines now (my son's favorite it Percy, the small engine) but Thomas remains the most popular, and surprisingly, he often tops the lists of most profitable licensed characters in the world.

So, friends of Penny-Arcade D&D, who is your favorite engine?

RMS- alas they do not stack. Your max discount per visit is 1.00/ga up to 35ga. So if pay like 1.54 per gallon my next three fill ups. Sweet. I have a 13 gallon tank and generally don't go below a quarter tank so still, something like 30 bucks in savings.

The island of Sodor is not without controversy, of course. There are the diesel engines, which live in the Dieselworks. As Thomas famously said:
Sodor steamies don't go to the Dieselworks. It's dark, and it's dirty, and it's full of diesels. Diesels can be devious.

There were also controversies in the creation of the books.
Percy was the source of much friction between Rev. W. Awdry and C. Reginald Dalby, the first illustrator of The Railway Series. Awdry complained that Percy did not look like a real locomotive, an issue that had caused contention between the two men on several occasions and concerning several characters. In the case of Percy, it was particularly infuriating, as Awdry had built a model of the engine in order that the artist could use it as a reference.

All this came to a head when the book Percy the Small Engine, centering on the eponymous character, was written. Awdry wrote to Dalby a letter requesting that he should make Percy look less like "a green caterpillar with red stripes". The sentence was this: "I beg, pray, and exhort you not to make Percy look like a green caterpillar with red stripes!" Insulted by this, Dalby resigned from the Railway Series.

Subsequent illustrators modified the design to make Percy look more like a typical industrial locomotive. The television series, however, utilised the original design.

In the original draft of the story where Henry sneezes at the stone throwing boys, they are reported to be covered in soot and left "as black as n*****s"

    @Dark Raven X

Decent session beers (that is, you can drink more than one of them without getting sick of it):
Belhaven (is a brewery, and Scottish, beers generally not of a style that is typical in England, if that matters)
St. Peter (also a brewery, their Golden Ale is very good)
Hobgoblin (Dark ale, don't make this the mainstay but popular with those that like a dark beer)
    Black Sheep
Old Speckled Hen (I think this is kind of dull, but meh)

    Heavier beers:
Marston's Oyster Stout (this is great)
    King Goblin/Witchcraft Ale
Young's Double Chocolate (almost a novelty beer, doesn't actually have chocolate in it)

You couldn't really drink either of those stouts as a pub drink, really. They're occasional beers.

    Know nothing about:
Monty Python Holy Grail (made by Black Sheep, probably decent, I'm always wary of novelty beers)
    Ginger Beer
Scare Crow (made by Wychwood who make Hob/King Goblin)
    Xingu Gold (apparently Brazilian?)
    Xingu Black
    Samuel Smith

If you were going for a typical draught beer selection, you'd probably want a light-ish ale (like the Black Sheep, or one of the St Peter's), a bitter (which you don't really have, but St Peter make one of those, too), then maybe a stout and/or a dark beer.

The heavier beers there are the kind of thing that you'd maybe have a bottle of occasionally. You probably wouldn't want them on draught unless your clientele were particularly into them.
