It really bugs me that they changed the name of our zoo to 'rosemond gifford zoo' and our mall to 'destiny usa' instead of just keeping their original names.
This is what happens when you get old.

I had no idea that Winky's game was top secret. I just thought it was odd that he mentioned it but never said specifically what it was.
Definitely never was PM'ed and asked to not mention it/ask about it.
I guess don't talk about things here if you don't want to talk about things here.
Or we can just exercise the intensely basic amount of common sense it takes to see that nobody is mentioning it by name and come to the conclusion that HM PERHAPS THERE IS A REASON
Or maybe he shouldn't come in and constantly make mysterious, vague references to it as if the knowledge is a carrot being dangled in front of everyone's face. If he wanted to be totally anonymous about it then he should never have mentioned it, should never have confirmed it to anyone, and should not have made references to it specific enough that enable people to solve the mystery.
I found it very annoying and upsetting. And almost cliquish among the people that did know.
To an extent, I agree with both the positions here.
It definitely feels a little exclusionary to talk sideways about it so openly, but at the same time, I don't see why it's impossible to just not talk about it directly so that the guy can have a little bit of separation between this persona and the game creator persona
It's also worth noting that probably 80% of the sideways talk was in jest and nearly every time it was brought up, people were just making non-factual jokes about the game's allegedly weird content.
There never was a clique. Most everyone who found the game found it on their own and subsequently respected winky's desire to not have it explicitly linked to his name here. We were mostly doing ok, aside from a few people who just could not let it go.
It didn't look like it was in jest. And even if it was, it was in poor taste because the jest was shaped as cliquishness even if it was fake cliquishness. I'm not a fucking mind reader and I stand by my behavior and irritation.
I would be 100% sympathetic to Winky if he didn't bring it up on his own repeatedly. It's not like he would sign on and people would just start to harangue him about the game or its identity.
Right now I am relating the story of an embarrassing photo I took. I don't like photos of me posted here, at least not outside of PAX time (where I break that rule just because it would be an undue burden on others).
Let's say that photo were on facebook and a few people here saw it and commented as well. And then a few others made stuff up as a joke. Are you entitled to look at it? Am I obligated to show you? Should I be required to shut up about it because you can't handle not knowing?
Of course not. None of those things are the case and it's was the same with Winky's game. You're being a very silly goose about this.
No one's entitled to look at anything, but it's rude to reference things in front of third-parties who you're not going to explain them to (A: remember what Casey said B: hahahah omg yeah! C: wait, what did Casey say? A&B: oh, nothing). It's one of the classic ways kids are dicks to each other in middle school and high school and it's something that adults largely stop doing because it's mean.
I think the dynamic does change in online spaces, but I have substantially more sympathy for Drez's annoyance than you seem to.
I'm a little bit sympathetic to it but at the same time, I am a person who has had his online identity leak into the real world and cause a huge mess. I've had off-color posts printed out and shown to me during a job interview. That's where the internet changes the dynamic. So to me, someone feeling a little left out doesn't even rate compared to helping someone else keep their life compartmentalized.
But he didn't try to keep it compartmentalized. I found his game earlier this month because of something unique and obvious he himself said about it: his funding stream, and the amount he was making per month. It was exactly the direct link he says he didn't want. It took me less than 10 minutes after that post.
did you come screaming into chat bragging about it afterwards?
Let me calm down a bit and say this:
1) I was pissed off at [chat] last night and walked off before Winky did, I guess. I did not witness that.
2) I did figure out the game title, but I did not come back and post it. Did that actually happen?
3) I do not think posting it would have been (was?) justified.
My complaint here is the nature of [chat]'s culture surrounding the secret.
the culture surrounding the secret was the same as any close group of friends either in real life or on a forum with this many people.
I guess I'm sorry you weren't in that group of friends. I wasn't either, for what it's worth.
I mean you can call it a clique to be mean, but that'd be like calling any group on this forum (and more than a few have formed) who didn't go out of their way to include you a clique.
It sounds to me like you don't understand what a clique is. Friends that make their "friendship" and internal cohesion so obvious in a public forum or space that others feel ostracized or marginalized by their overt, insular-but-public interactions is a clique. And that's my assessment of how people talk about the identity of Winky's game.
So It Goes is a great example and I'm only bringing it up because she did. Do you ever see anyone in chat obliquely discussing her identity? Or for that matter, do you see this happening a lot?
No. It was literally just Winky's secret. Over and over and over.
Here's a surprise.
I don't know what the game is either.
As far as I'm concerned Winky's secret is just that. His secret. I'm not going to go searching Google to find it, I'm not going to PM him asking him to give me a link, and I'm not going to get upset when other people are in on the secret because that's life man.
You don't get to be included in everything, and sometimes that sucks and it makes you feel like shit. I sure wasn't picked first for any sports teams in highschool.
Regarding preacher's comments about chat being exclusionary. We're not, everyone is welcome and other than Winky I've yet to see chat chase a person away. I can't say anything as to his personal real life experiences with people though.
100% bullshit, people post in chat all the time and get ignored for more popular posters all the time. Chat doesn't tell people they are unwanted, they just ignore the fuck out of them and hope they go away. And over the years that's exactly what happens, the marginalized leave and everyone in chat occasionally asks "Where'd so and so go?" Like they actively gave a shit when that person was posting.
i don't feel like that behavior is limited to [chat] or even this entire forum at large. Like, if someone just posts stuff nobody is interested in engaging with then yeah, they'll feel ignored because people tend not to respond to things they can't relate to or don't know anything about. This kind of goes for all human interaction at large. And that's unfortunate, but i don't know that people are doing it out of malice. I mean, it might have happened before in the past, and i wouldn't know about that because I only started posting in chat relatively recently. But in all the internet communities i've participated in it's pretty much always been like that.
I think it's hard for people to see objectively but what Preacher is describing happens and not for the reasons you are suggesting.
For instance, someone will post an image and get no reactions. Then someone more popular will quote it and add the word "cool" and get like 12 agrees/awesomes.
This is something Matt (?) mentioned a couple of weeks ago. It happens. I don't think there's a solution but let's not pretend that ideas and content are treated abstract from the person posting it.
*shrug* i attribute that more to the vagaries of time and the fact that it's a forum? like, i will turn away from chat for 30 minutes doing something and it can move 2-5 pages in that time, if not more, and i'm not always going to be arsed to go over every page i missed. bottom page posts get pooped on all the time in terms of reactions because people will often just opt to skip to the new page instead of scroll all the way down. like, i'm not denying that there is a popular bias but you guys kind of make it sound like there's a popularity cabal
So Egypt is buying those Mistrals. Doesn't make a damn bit of sense.
I saw that.
I think a better way of saying it is, "US is buying the Mistrals using Egypt as the middle man to say fuck you Russia."
Because you know damn well the money for those is not Egyptian but US military aid dollars.
I mean sure, it's US military aid dollars but it's still weird as fuck since they seem to have the urge to spend that aid on other things. It's just a weird use of their money. And not selling those to the Russians was the dumbest fucking thing. They wanted them for the tech transfer on a bunch of radio equipment, got that and then didn't have to pay for the ships they didn't really want. So basically a freebie.
It was weird across the board.
I remember when the French were at first like, "We are still totally selling these to the Russians."
"Then we totally aren't!"
Now it has become, "Now we are selling them to the Egyptians because they totally aren't the Russians even though the Russians don't really want them anyway but this gives us a big PR thing to not sell them to the Russians. And the Americans are paying anyway."
I wonder if this is tied to the Rafale and frigate deals.
Maybe France added it in as a cheap bonus? Gave them a deal. I am not sure though. I think there was some backdoor shenanigans to this but I haven't heard anything. Been out of the loop on Egypt for a bit.

The writing and voice acting is fantastic in it. The chemistry between the two main characters is fantastic.

Did Metallica get a new vocalist after Master of Puppets? Battery doesn't like like it's from
The same guy.
wat?
Battery is on MoP
it's also the first track on the album
I think Hetfield's voice changed a bunch over his career, which is normal. So if you listen to a lot of the later stuff and only discover the earlier bits of their catalog later on in life then I can see how it'd be confusing.
He fucked up his vocal cords doing vocals for stuff that was on Garage Inc, which is why there's a distinct change.
Demo through Justice (Black less so because of how clean it was) is pretty clearly him though

I dont know if they've reworked the early story stuff, but the first part of your adventure will be focused on getting to level 40.
Pick up bounties form the robot in the Tower (which will be the main hub throughout the game) and whatever story quests are available to you. Keep plowing through those and you'll level quickly. At first they give you more bounties as you complete them, but later on it will settle to six PvP and six PvE bounties a day.
Don't worry too much about upgrading gear or anything like that. You'll get new gear so often that it's not worth it. Once you hit 40 then another game begins where you are trying to upgrade your light level!

I had written out a post making fun of it for being like one of those back shavers on an extendable arm or a selfie stick but I deleted it. I have a thing against technology invented to help people avoid interacting with each other but I also hate interacting with people. So that's my own self-loathing to sort out.

Didn't we just a few weeks ago agree that chat can be clicquish at times? Or at least come off that way...
I don't think it is usually intentional, but if someone new comes in and starts posting, and gets ignored, I can easily see them feeling unwelcome and leaving.

Do the stuff the story points you at until your 40 then come back. Until then you really just need to slap on new gear as you get it and shoot mans.
