The First Democratic Presidential Debate - Jim Webb Officially Shutting Up

Link to the CNN debate stream. It doesn't show commercials so if it cuts out you should just have to wait a couple minutes. Don't worry you're not missing anything.

Tonight at 8:30 EST the first Democratic presidential debate will be taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada. Participants include

Hillary Clinton

Bernie Sanders

Martin O'Malley

Jim Webb

Lincoln Chafee

Though it might as well just be those first two.

CNN will be streaming the debate for free from their site. I'll add a link to the top of the OP once they provide it.

And for the love of god try to keep it civil for at least a few hours.

Its funny how they are letting in 3 people polling in the kids table numbers so as to not have it just be bernie and hillary because ha ha our media.

I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

This is really more about how clown shoes it is over in the GOP side that they can't fit all the candidates on a fucking stage.

Well O'malley, Webb, and Chafee shouldn't be there, they are polling like dog shit and stand zero chance of being the nominee. I mean I know people hate excluding people on polls, but not when you never poll above like 4%. Deez nuts polls better than that!

Eh, we're still months out form the earliest of voting. This isn't exactly crazy time to let some lesser known candidates get some exposure.

Granted, I had no clue any of these guys were actually running except O'malley but well, uh, yeah, those dudes are fucked.

For the trio its more a case of trying to make a push for the VP spot than the main spot, or at the very least set up for a 2020 run in case the worst happens and Sanders/Hilldawg fail in 2016.

That's reason enough to have them on tonight.

I think the dynamics of a five person debate are more interesting than those of a two person debate, especially when nobody knows anything about the candidates. You're less likely to get two people arguing vociferously about whether the two cent tax goes too far enough.

I really have to wonder if and how hard anybody would consider attacking Hillary. She's the presumptive front runner and the stupid Benghazi thing won't go away but there is that whole "VP" thing to worry about.

This was the part that sold it for me:
Of course some media jerk probably wants to game that out. I mean, how long would it take Biden to get to Tuesday's debate in Vegas? If, say, he were in D.C.? Figure you'd leave from Reagan National, right? And then he'd fly from ...

I'm not expecting the debate to get too heated, though I admittedly know little about the ones who aren't Hillary or Bernie. But there's nothing to be gained for Hillary or the Three Amigos going negative. For Hillary, she stands to gain more by being cool and unflustered and comfortable in her lead. For the Three, their candidacies are such long shots that they're better served appearing competent and likeable in order to make some administration short lists for either of the two who have a chance.

Bernie is the only one with something to gain by going negative, but even then it's risky at a time when a lot of people will really be seeing him for the first time. As well, this is a great opportunity for the candidates to reinforce the Democratic brand as the grown-up alternative to whatever the fuck is happening over on the right.

    Hey now he's the VP.

He could probably pull in a favor and have the air force rush him over there in one of their supersonic jets. That should save another couple of hours.

Something I did not know about Chaffee:
More important than all this, though, is the fact that he attended Montana State University’s Horseshoeing School, later working as a blacksmith at racetracks all over the United States. A vote for Lincoln Chafee is a vote for blacksmiths.

    Huh.

OMG. This is CNN. This is 100% plausible.

    .....

OMG, I can see them making a holographic Biden and having a CNN producer write the dialogue for him and use a voice synthesizer to show what it would be like if Biden was really at the debate.

    ...

    Fuck, this is too plausible.

Since they literally have an extra podium just in case I fully expect a cardboard standup of Biden on stage.

I don't expect any personal attacks or the hostility of the GOP debates, which is a good thing. I do expect Hillary to be hit with questions on Benghazi and whatever other BS the hosts could find in the last few days, and Hillary to have good responses.

I also expect Agents of SHIELD to be fantastic which is what I'm going to watch instead of the debate (I'll probably catch a replay of this).
